"The crew of junior we have this year arc impressive and 1 look for them to make a big contribution," said Hansen. He referred first of alt to the junior backs in Mike Robert. 160 and Jim Batch-do- r, 190; Robert Femeau, 6-- 5-- two-a-da- QUARTERBACKS. There w ill not be senior signal callers this year. The Lanccn will have to choose from primarily the junior class and maybe in the sophomores. "I like all four of the kid we're looking at quarterback with," said Hansen, "They're working hard and their mechanics as quarterbacks are getting better with each day." THE LAYTON coach can appreciate the hit squad it rendering, for it w as plenty of that stuff that helped a couple of his teams in the late 70s make it to the state championship finals. Tve always upheld the belief that you of the competition by just can beat working hard," said Hansen. Hopefully all the work w ill pay Layton some marks in the victory column this year, at least of the that's what the coach and play ers hope for. w ork HANSEN IS leaning more to Brian Bailey, 150, than anyone right now. Thats most- TWO YEARS ago Layton finished 7 overw ere 6 last season. The '83 group are just as optimistic as any club in the past, but in talking to a few of the players, there's a serious feeling that things are going to continue to get better. Better because, like Hansen says, this group has shown some distinctively positive attributes about working for results. And too, Hansen likes the talent that abounds with the .skill positions. The Lancers will open their 1983 season this Friday against Bountiful on the road. Two weeks later Hansen and Co. will move a little north to battle Gearfield in their first 1983 league game. O, s 2-- all and 3-- ABOUT THAT contest against the Braves, neither fans or the returnees on the team have forgotten the frustrating overtime loss the Braves handed them in their first game last year. Tom Kidd, one of those returning players, commented, "I think last years season opener was a letdown for us. We'd really like to start things on the right foot this year. 7 :f , . Brian is a serious ballplayer and Hjnsen likes his "heady play." "He's a hustler," said the coach. The other juniors that might get a chance at 165. QB are Fcrncau and Bart Vernon, The sophomore that is getting a serious look is Bobby Fresques who comes in a 0 and 150. "BOBBY IS a good looking kid," said Hansen. Layton will have a few returning lettermen coming back to assist in protecting from the pass. Kids like Tom Kidd, Trujillo, and Murdock all lettered last season. Tucker should be quite an asset to 0, 0, . 5-- corp. Two transfers that took place in the off-season and during summer drills might pay off for the Landers. First there is the transfer of from runningback to a Matt Austad, defensive linebacker position. This isnt saying that Matt might not get the call to run the ball sometime through the season, but Hansen says that Austad could be "an outstanding line- backer. 0, 0, THREE MORE seniors that will be seeing some playing time will be Ronnie Pierce, 160 and Aaron Strong, 60; Collin Shaffer, 0 and 170. A couple of juniors that Layton might depend on are Jim Kortright, 0 175 and 180. Ron Barker, From here Hansen says there are a number of untested seniors and juniors still left to fill in spots or'to assume backup roles. The coach believes that kids like Brimhall, Facer and Shoop will be seeing plenty of playing time both ways until some of the others not mentioned can move into a position where they can help the team. - 1 6-- 0, jV 1 RECEIVERS. Leading the list here is senior Darry l Lacey w ho has muscled up and matured a ton over last year. He saw various amounts of action as a junior with the varsity. At the present time he stands in at 2 and 85. Lacey will play the tight end position on offense. Were really leaning on Darryl to do the job, stated Hansen. There are a list of other capable wingbacks and other receivers including seniors, Paul 150; Tony Walters, Herald, 160; 165; Mike Trujillo, Greg McClune 160; Eric Natilder, 160; and Todd Murdock. THE JUNIORS here are Vernon and Shawn Moss. LINEBACKERS. Austad should be quite an. asset on defense. Hansen says his speed has improved which will make hime very valuable 210. there. He now stands at Tucker will also see some linebacker time as will Batchelor, Roberts, McClune, Shaffer and Herald. AGAIN, LIKE in other positions, Hansen says there may be a few untested seniors and juniors that could move into helpful roles. M and line while Darryl Lacey ; HANSEN SAYS the early games in preseason wont always make or break you, but none the less he wouldnt downgrade the importance of winning in early games. Hopefully this group can pile up some confidence in early games against the Braves, Viewmont and Woods Cross. The following is a summary of the Lancers 1983 squad: DEFENSIVE AND OFFENSIVE LINES, Not a lot of size here and as has been a characteristic of the past couple of years, Hansen will have to rely on quickness and fitness from his upfront people. The only kids with any varsity experience at all are three seniors in Dave Brimhall, 200; 190 and Dave Facer, Chris Sbopp. 190.
