Im On December 15 the Ephraim Zoning Commission will submit a proposal to the city council that would make virtually every older block vulnerable to infiltration of multiple housing with all its ills, while protecting only newer residential areas. Newer areas will be designated R- -l (singlefamily dwellings only). Older blocks will be designated R--2 (houses and duplex apartments for up to 16 persons) or R-- 3 (houses and four-ple- x apartments for up to 32 persons). These older R--2 and R-- 3 blocks contain in most cases a majority of old and historic houses and outbuildings, several of which have been meticulously restored and others well maintained. Still others are just waiting for people with vision to receive them. These old buildings are the heart and soul of Ephraim a Mormon pioneer settlement in historic Sanpete County. Sanpete towns, with their wealth of disappointed. Jeremy looked up at him with tears in hiseyes. Idontknowwhy either. I know it was wrong, and Im sorry." I, the woman who thought she was so good with kids, stood there totally confused, wondering what had happened. When we lose control, our children arc given the opportunity to become the injured party. When disciplining achild, stay incontrol. In as few sentences as possible, state the offense and consequence. Above all, maintain an atmosphere that shows youre concerned and you care. Adult temper tantrums do wonders for venting anger. They do nothing to teach our children to take responsibility for their actions. Miracles story of the Christmas 4 Lillian Fox It is not necessary to leave Manti to witness miracles. They are here surrounding us. Life itself is a miracle. Each of our five senses are separate miracles. We wake up each morning to the miracle of a new day, a new season, and we count our many blessings. Then we begin to use all those manmade miracles which we take for granted. We switch on the lights, turn up the furnace, the fridge, the TV, the radio, VCR and microwave. We step into our cars and turn on the key. Since early days the inhabitants of Manti have witnessed miracles. It was a miracle when hundreds of poisonous rattlesnakes came out of the rocks, above the winter Pioneer cave homes, just like the plagues of Egypt. Mothers found snakes coiled by their babies and children, but the. remarkable miracle was that not one person was biuen. It was a miracle when the people raised the white stones from the earth and built the temple with the kind of equipment they had at that lime, a building that awes construction engineers to this day. The settlement of Manti was itself a miracle based on the dream of an Indian Chief and the vision of a prophet. In our day the Mormon Miracle Pageant speaks for itself. We have witnessed another miracle in manti this holiday season. We have seen a dream transform into a reality in a short period of time. Last spring when David Mackey was visiting Manti, he suggested that the History House on Heritage Comer (the block below Temple Hill) become a lighted winter wonderland this Christmas season. Dreams always precede miracles, and so it was that Elliott and Carol Brailhwaite decided to make this dream come to pass. There are many people willing to help us, said Elliott, if we give them an opportunity. All we need is unity, cooperation and a willingness to serve. They started from nothing, no money, no materials, no workers. On foot and by telephone they went to work seeking assistance. They rallied dozens of volunteers, donors of money, lights and decorations, they gained the support of Manti City. Women volunteered to decorate the History House and men the grounds. Manti City provided electrical power. Trees wore cut down, debris removed, electric cables buried underground and a pole planted to carry overhead power lines, bushes were decorated, murals painted and scenery constructed. Many of the participants were senior citizens. Then on Monday evening, November 29, the great moment arrived, it was time to turn on the lights. The highway was blocked off and a large crowd assembled across the street They witnessed a light parade, including a color guard, a performance by the Manti High Band, Schwinn Quality Bicycles Bikes are assembled Free and come with 6 months Free Service! The Commission needs representation that is well versed in historic preservation and sensitive city planning. Also, the zoning proposal is at odds with the efforts of the County Tourism Commission, which is attracting visitors to Sanpete by emphasizing the historical architectural treasures to be found here, among other things. If this proposal is passed, the groundwork is laid for Ephraims historic blocks to be seriously compromised, and Ephraim will no longer be the quaint, quiet old pioneer town that so many of us love and, furthermore, will have retained little tourist appeal. We, who live on Ephraims traditional blocks, will one day lode out our windows and see the blank wall of an apartment building where once we saw other homes, bams, trees, gardens and distant vistas. Those who have driven by the projea are probably wondering why we are still laying sod this time of year. While the season and the weather are not quite appropriate, we were able to get (without charge for the sod) over 100,000 square feet of sod from an area on Utah Valley State Colleges campus. We will continue to plant grass as long as possible. Wearetold that under suitable conditions, sod can remain viable through the winter months. There is much more to be done, and much can be done with the support from other segments of our community. Oberg Manufacturing has assisted in the design of a concession -- rest roan building. Matt Nielson & Moroni Feed have provided Nutri Mulch at a reduced price. Tom Bailey has donated considerable time and equipment, as have Dave Larsen, Mu Pleasant Unit National Guard, james Jorgensen, and others.
