She talks about the differences between then and now. There wasnt really an all day date type of thing, and there wasnt all the big creative deal of asking and answering. Guys would just walk up and ask a girl. it (Pictured above: 1973 Prom Royaly; Reid Cox and Claire McCaul, first attendants) By: Anna Osmond and to vote on their Prom royalty. Becca Scholes The most magical night of your high school life, the night you and your future spouse are elected as Prom royalty. Sounds pretty nice, huh? Sorry, this isnt a description of your Prom experience, as much as you might like it to be. Instead, its a description of the experience of a past Prom a long, longtime ago... We now go back to the year 1 973, in the city building that used to be the home of the Templars. The students have met in the auditorium upstairs (In those days they used to do it and inform the lucky couples the week before instead of the night of the big dance.) The nominees leave the room and the rest of the class votes. And what surprise our very own Claire Cox (whose smiling face and impeccable service we so often experience in our office,) experienced when she found out that she and her then boyfriend, Reid Cox had received the honor of being voted first attendants by their class. Claire Cox talks about the experience as she remembers Maybe they're harder to turn down that way. Girls would get out of school to get their hair done and that was about it. On the big night, parents and royalty would line up and students and parents would line up to shake hands and congratulate them, then refreshments were served. The Promenade and the dance were then held in the armory. They w ere pretty simi- lar to today's proceedings except that kids actually stayed all the students and parents) and danced instead of stand- ing in line all night to get their pictures taken. One thing we . missed out on is that they had live bands performing at their dance. Other differences were that the dresses weren't quite as pooty usually, and there wasn't the big all day group date. Some things remain the same, however. According to Claire, I just remember it was a really exciting day, especially for the girls, I guess it wasn't all that thrilling for the boy's, but for the girls, its just one of the most fun days they ever have. It's their day to be a princess. Although the Prom follows the same traditions, there are few changes which distinguish it for today. By choosing the Prom royalty the Junior class now nominates three boys and three girls by writing them down on paper atpromenade practice. The top three boys and girls from the grade are then chosen. The students with the most votes are the king and queen and the ones with the second most are first attendants and so on. After promenade is over, the royalty are announced and brought to the center of the floor. They are given crowns and flowers and honored with a personal dance with their royal partner. They then take on the cameras to get a royal shot. Although quite a few things have changed. Prom still remains one of the most special dances in the eyes of many students.
