Show Saturday, Oct. 12, 19901 3D Standard-Examiner Help needed today for the homeless Followers of Christ asked to oifer aid to those families deserving of rescue Noting the favorble circumstances of this year’s conference Gordon B. Hinckley reminded the audience that it was not always this way. The road to the present was paved with the hardships faced and overcome by the early Saints’ sacrifices. Speaking at the Sunday morning session of General Conference, Hinckley, first counselor in the First Presidency of the LDS Church, said sacrifice “has always been a part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The crowning element of our faith is our conviction of our living God, the Father of us all, and of his beloved son, the Redeemer of the world. It is because of his life and sacrifice that we are Nee «...° He cited instances in the history of the church where against overwhelming odds, members overcame and survived the perils and hardships of establishing the church. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice by losing their lives. Hinckley said he was grateful that members today don’t have to face the those kinds ofsituations, but said there are many in the worid who are in need of help and are “deserving of rescue.” He said as followers of Christ, church members must help the homeless, the hungry, the destitute. “We can do more to help those who live on the edge of survival. “We can reach out to strengthen those who wallow in the mire of pornography, gross immorality and drugs ...” There are wives and children who weep in homes where there is abuse, he said, and there are fathers who can be rescued from evil that destroys and brings heartbreak. Hinckley said not to forget the heritage the church has received from its forebears, and that “You and I know what we should do. God help us to do it when it needs to be done.” AUGUST MILLER/Standard-Examiner Sherry Bitter of Salt Lake City finds husband Bob’s shoulder a good place to rest her head while listening to conference. Wirthlin reinforces basic LDS beliefs Joseph B. Wirthlin of the Council of the Twelve Apostles spoke at the Saturday morning session of General Conference saying “The Godhead consists of three separate, distinct personages who are one in purpose. The Father and Son have tangible bodies of flesh and bone while the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit.” He said knowing that Jesus Christ is the firstborn son of<God in the spirit and the only begotten son in the flesh gives a far more noble and majestic view of him than if he were just a great teacher or philosopher. “He is the Lord, the redeemer of all mankind, aur mediator with the Father.” The Holy Ghost provides the ‘The Godhead consists of three separate, distinct personages who are one in purpose. The Father and Son have tangible bodies of flesh and bone while the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit.’ — Joseph B. Wirthlin “convincing witness that the Gospel is true and gives a person a testimonyof the divinity of Christ. He guides us in our choices and in our search for truth.” On parenting, Wirthlin said the Lord’s plan calls for parents to teach their children during the impressionable and formative years when they develop attitudes and habits that last a lifetime. Imagine, he said, if everyone were to live the Word of Wisdom the decline there would be in automobile accidents, illnesses, premature deaths, crime, broken homes and wasted lives. The church, he said, is concerned for the poor of the Earth, and has done humanitarian work in Many places in the world thatis little known. Wirthlin said a characteristic of the Gospel is the adherence to the Lord’s law of chastity. From ancient times to the present, he said, the Lord has commanded his people to obey this law. While some may think this law is Outdated, the Lord has never revoked the law of chastity. He advised members to never be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to partake of the sacrament worthily, and never defame the Savior’s name. Don’t ridicule the priesthood and ordinances of the gospel and by doing these things, the “spirit of rebellion will never come into your hearts.” Serving mission vital despite hardship said “The call to full-time missionary service rarely comes when it is convenient or easy to serve. He said the years they spend in the Aaronic Priesthood are years of maturing, learning, developing and years of emotional highs and lows, “a period when wise counseling and proper example by ah inspired leader can work wonders and lift lives.” He said the church’s suppor of the Scouting program has not diminished and that President Ezra Taft Benson has described Scouting as “a noble program. It is a builder of character, not only in the boys, but also in the Men who provide the leadership.” Monson told those serving in bishoprics, on high councils, and officers in priesthood quorums not to let discouragement creep into their lives. “Our Heavenly Father has inspired your call and desires Boys need men to set a good example, he said. that you succeed.” He said through prayer, diligent preparation, and faithful service “we oan succeed in Our Sacred callings.” Priesthood leaders should visit the homes of quorum members, bless the sick, help members with various projects, comfort those who are grieving, and that sometimes these services may fot be re- corded on a written report, “but more important, they find lodge- ment in the soul and bring joy to the heart. They are also known of the Lord.” He urged young men to prepare for Mission service, and to know, as ElRay L. Christiansen said, “Your mission is the mold in which your life will be cast,” so they should serve worthily and “with an eye single to the gloryof God and his purposes.” Cannon: Make each day good cd hood session of General ConferRex wi place be guided priesthood members that they have been called to follow Jesus and become “fishers of men, laborers in Postiude Guidance, strength come from faith in Jesus ence Christ.” Those men werent asked ifthey wanted to serve or if it was Convenient. “Each received an Official call as our Heavenly Father directed.
