Attending, but not speaking, during the first hour of both morning sessions was Ezra Taft Benson, president ofthe 8 million-member church. Frailty from age and two recent skull operations has limited the public appearances and lecturing by the 92-year-old leader. In all, there were 33 speeches delivered over two days that included five two-hour sessions each. hood session that those who cannot control their tempers and who exercise unrighteous control over their wives are on a downward path. “A violent temper is such terrible, corrosive thing,” he said. “And the tragedy is that it accomplishes no good, it only feeds evil with resentment and rebellion and pain.” He said there are too many men who leave their wives at home in the morning and go to workto find attractive young women and “look upon themselves as young and handsome, as an irresistible catch.” He said their wives may not look the same as they did 20 years ago when they married them because “who would, after living with you for 20 years?” Concerning infidelity, he said cle, in overflow facilities and on the Temple Square grounds, were in attendance during each session of the conference. In addition, tens of thousands watched the two-day proceeding via satellite beamed to more than 3,000 LDS meetinghouses throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Haiti, the West Indies and the Dominican Republic. In speeches said to be centered on the “troubles of our times,” physical and sexual abuse were harshly condemnedby top leaders in the LDS Church during the conference sessions. President Gordon B. Hinckley, first counselor in the First Presidency, warned members during the Saturday night male-onlypriest- “the tragedy is, that some men are ensnared by their own foolishness and their own weakness.” He said they set aside their wives and “throw to the wind” solemn covenants made in the temple at marriage. Hinckley also warned the priesthood audience against being domineering and unkind to their wives. “A husband who domineers his wife, who demeans and humiliates her and who makes officious demands upon her, not only injures her, but he also belittles himself,” he said. “And in manycases, he plants a pattern of future similar behavior in his sons.” Hinckley told the priesthood gathering that there is no enduring happiness, lasting peace or tranquility in the home “without the companionship of a good woman. Our wives are not our inferiors.” President Thomas S. Monson condemned child abuse as being vile and heinous during his address to members Sunday morning. “Some children witness their fathers savagely beating their mothers, while others are on the receiving end of such abuse,” said the second counselor in the First Presidency. “What cowardice, what depravity, what shame!” Monson said local hospitals everywhere are treating bruised and battered children whose guardians tell “bald-faced lies” of accidental injuries. “Liars, bullies who abuse children, they will one day reap the whirlwind of their foul deeds,” Monson said. “The quiet, the hurt, the offended child victim ofabuse, and at times incest, must receive help.” Quoting a letter he received from a district judge, Monson said there is an alarming increase of reported physical, psychological and sexual abuse of children. “The church does not condone such heinous and vile conduct,” he said, “Rather, we condemn in the harshest of terms such treatment of God’s precious children.” He concluded the conference speaking in behalf of Benson. “How we would enjoy hearing from President Benson,” he said “We are grateful that now, in his 93rd year, he is free from pain, able to move about, meet on occasion with the First Presidency and See LDS on 2D MISSIONARIES Deadline for Church News items is 5 p.m. Tuesdays at the Standard-Examiner main office or 3 p.m. at the Layton office.
