A friend lost her son to suicide and, although I’ve never known what to say, I’ve tried to be a good listener. Lately, she’s expressing more anger at him, and I’m not sure what’s going on. Is this normal when you lose a child to suicide? — L.M., Dearborn, Mich. A. Yes, it is normal. But first let me commend you for staying connected. It’s all too common for friends to withdraw, repeating the same message as the suicide: “You're worthless and I don’t ever want to see you again.” Although its intensity and duration may differ, a sense of rejection is common to suicide survivors. As a surviving brother put it, “Heleft me with just my side of the argument.” The words there are “heleft me” — no more chancesfor a dialogue, no more give and take; only one party got to say what he/she PARENT TALK had to say. Survivors had doors slammed in their faces by people they loved. In the early stages, it is common for survivors to focus on the grief and sense of loss, to blame them- selves for sins of omission and commission. Often, others are blamed as well — the father who didn’t understand his son, the girlfriend whorejected him, the broth- er who fought with him. But while each of us bears responsibility for our half of a relationship, so does the person who has committed suicide. If the person who commits suicide doesn’t try to work out a compromise or remainssilent about his or her needs and pain, it’s hardly fair to hold ourselves and others accountable. Parents are particularly vulnerable to excessive guilt over suicide. surgeon either will flatten out the bulge or remove disc material. logic exam. Although the traditional way to detect glaucomais totest for an increase in fluid pressure in the eye above the normalrange of 10 mm to 21 mm of mercury, a more thorough examination is required to definitely rule out the presence of blindness. Black Americans have a fourfold higher incidence of the glaucoma. These tests include but are not disease than whites. The reason for the difference is unknown. Glaucoma usually is described as a condition in which fluid pressure builds up in the eye, causing damage to the optic nerve that results in blindness if not treated. However, the relationship between ocular pressure and vision damage appears more complicated than previously thought. the health of the optic nerve. The PET scans predict the disease three years earlier than current diagnostic procedures. Hoffman said the scans (three-dimensional pictures of the brain) accurately predicted the development of Alzheimer’s in 12 persons who had suffered memory loss and inability to think clearly. The scans also gave early warnings that the disease was developing in 12 other patients. ASSORTED WIDTHS & COLORS ENTIRE STOCK 45” WIDE eal kkk ke MON. &TUE. ONLY! Psychological theories, largely formulated by Freud and his followers, have made us responsible for the development and mental health of our children. Thereis a lot to be said for these theories, but they are not set in concrete nor were they meant to be. A growing body of evidence says a child arrives with all sorts of innate tendencies; that much of the personality is born and not made. Why then persist in believing that ‘parents are the only influences? Test detects Alzheimer’s years earlier A medical test that detects Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages has been developed by researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Using a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner, physicians led by Dr. John M. Hoffman the help of surgery. If you notice symptoms ofback injury, contact your veterinarian immediately. Pet owners also can practice good preventive care to head off disc disease before it becomes a problem. Keep small-breed and largebreed dogs thin — heavy dogs are predisposed to disc problems — and discourage your small-breed pet from jumping. Jumping off furniture or down stairs can lead to back problems for these breeds.
