Show TRAVEL Standard-Examiner Sunday, May 24, 1992 3E & Mining town to begin celebration Weekly centennial events get under way May 30 at Cripple Creek, Colo. Standard-Examiner staff and wire services Cripple Creek, an historic Colorado mining town, will salute its centennial May 30 with the arrival of the Pony Express and a parade. These will launch a series of events that will run each weekend through September. Founded in 1892, the gold mining town had a rapidly growing population of 5,000 by mid-year, with an estimated 1,000 prospectors, promoters, businessmen and painted ladies arriving monthly. By 1902, the population had reached 20,000. Cripple Creek boasted electricity before New York City and had water piped to every lot. By the early 1900s, some $100 million of gold had been excavated from the hills. Today, the town, located in central Colorado south of Denver, has a population total that barely reaches 1,000. Each weekend throughout the summer will feature a historical event. For information, contact the Cripple Creek Chamber of Commerce at (800) 526-8777. BBI is also a member of The National Network, a nationwide organization made up of reservation services throughout the United States and Canada.
