In 1956, Hersh Ipaktchian came to the United States from Iran to see if that saying was true. It proved to be accurate at least for him. From a young man with little money and practically no knowledge of the English language, Ipaktchian has become a restaurant entrepreneur worth millions of dollars. Ipaktchian, who dropped out of Weber State Colleges engineering program in 1962 to support his wife and new baby, had originally planned to be a geological engineer. Instead, he took a number of service jobs at such places as restaurants, gas stations and stores, ending up as a cook at the Layton Arctic Circle in 1965. It quickly became apparent that the young immigrant had a flair for the food business. Within a was managing the Layton year, Ipaktchian restaurant, and in 1968 restaurant owner Gene Posselli made him district manager of the Layton, Bountiful and Rose Park Arctic Circles. Two years later, Ipaktchian decided to find out if he could buy the businesses himself. His boss said he would loan him the money for the purchase if Ipaktchian could raise $20,000 as a down payment, which Ipaktchian did by pledging the title to his car To spend more time with his family and less on the road, Ipaktchian sold all his time out-of-to- ventures, retaining only the Layton Anthonys, the Arctic Circles in Layton and Kaysville, and Don Pedros. Even with his reduced ownership, the energetic restaurateur manages to keep busy, however. I still put in my 10 hours a day, meet with the managers ievery day, Ipaktchian said. I try and attend all restaurant conventions to learn about new ... ideas, products, equipment, uniforms In this business, if you dont upgrade your restaurants, you wont be in business tomorrow, he noted. Ipaktchian also spends many hours on Utah Restaurant Association business. He is now the president of the URA and will be the next URA board chairman in conformance with the leadership progression of the organization. He has become quite involved with the Layton community, helping to raise funds for the Heritage Museum, spearheading the sale of advertisements for the Layton High School official football program, aiding the schools student council concession stands and serving as a Sterling Scholar judge. If I took more than one day off a week, Id go crazy, Ipaktchian explained. Somethings always got to be happening. Lifes too short. V8-6-- 4 Nearly everybody has a friend nicknamed Old Ache and Pains. He, or she, seemingly always complaining of shoulder, neck, and arm pain ... is not necessarily old. What is this individuals problem? We put this very question to Dr. Brian Burns of the Chirofjractic Care Center. Shoulder and arm pain with varying degrees of immobility, says Dr. Burns, constitutes the most frequently recognized symptoms of structural defects in the lower neck and upper spine. Symptoms of defects in this area of the spine vary greatly, however, and may include numbness and tingling in the fingers, pain and tenderness of the forearm, pain across the chest and upper back, and headaches. Any of these symptoms may appear isolated or in combination. Dr. Burns points out that, Frequently the condition begins as stiff and tender shawl muscles across the top of the shoulders. Over a period of weeks the condition progresses to a burning ache and may extend into the neck and head. Neck and shoulder movement becomes increasingly painfjil and difficult. Attempts to shave or comb the hair may cause sharp pain down the arm and tingling in the fingers. Weakness and fatigue tremor of the arm may accompany the pain. The muscles across the chest may become tender. Die symptoms are made more severe by coughing or sneezing. If a person would only seize this opportunity for effective treatment of shoulder, neck, and arm pain, many severe postural ailments could be averted, says Dr. Burns.
