Executive Director of the Davis County Council on Aging, Alice J. Johnson, told the Board of Directors Monday that they will start the study sometime between January and March 1981. An inversion has been keeping particulates - v t - and other pollutants in the lower elevations and have prompted warnings to people who are ill or have breathing difficulties. Inversion Keeps Pollution, Fog in Valleys ,A temperature inversion this past week has capped the valley with a warm air lid, preventing the dispersal of air pollution. The soupy conditions have brought warnings to people who have respiratory ailments to remain inside and refrain from strenuous activity. ;The pollution level reached a high on Monday night with an. Air Pollution Index (API) reading of 135 for total suspended particulates (TSP), 167 for carbon monoxide (CO) on Friday night, and for Ozone there was no significant reading. There is no reading for sulfur dioxide because S02 isnt monitored in Davis County, only in the Magna area where there is a potential health hazard due to Kennecott, said Richard Valentine, of the Bureau of Air Quality. . The API was developed by the Bureau of Air Quality to inform the public of pollution levels and their effects on public health, Valentine said. The API is a simple rating system using a 0 to 500 scale. The scale is sectioned into five categories ranging from Very Good to Hazardous with cautionary statements for each category. Information is collected daily on the levels of TSP, CO, S02, and ozone. These levels are then measured against the quality of food!: States served, nutritional content, and they'-wil- l be analyzing it as to cost per serving. During this period the pollution may cause premature deaths to the ill and elderly and cause an onset of certain diseases to the healthy.
