Show I,nktMi Review, December 18, 1980, l'uge34 Cost of Drugs At Hospital Below Projection ROY Pharmaceutical expenditures at Weber County Memorial Hospital are reported to be $30,000 less than projected for 1980. In a report to the Weber County Hospital Advisory Board Tuesday Douglas Parsons, pharmacist for the hospital, explained that this was possible because of the cooperation he has received from the medical staff. He said he had been careful to keep the quality of the pharmaceutical products up and the costs down throughout the year by buying from certain companies that they know have good quality items. , We have our quality but were saving expenses too, he said. He has worked with the medical staff in buying medicines that have the same effects as some more expensive products but because of different chemical makeup are not as expensive to purchase. , Kenneth D. Bradshaw, hospital administrator, said they are dependant upon the doctors to use these medicines as well as the pharmacists identification of tjie products on order for the savings to be realized. ; Parsons also told the advisory board that they have increased their returns from Medicaid recently. Kenneth R. Colby, controller for the hospital, said that this has been achieved by maximizing the returns they are receiving. We dont know what the maximum amount of reimbursement is. He explained that they submit the amounts to Medicaid and are reimbursed for certain portions. The increases they have received, which in effect are the maximum they can receive, are credited to the use of a new computerized system that has recently been developed by the hospital staff. Parsons said they had been using a formula that the Medicaid program had given them, but they also had the option to use the system they recently devised. Participants were selected for the blood pressure screening program after a week-lon- g process which took place in the hospital cafeteria. Those who exhibited a consistent diastolic (the lower lumber Which shows your heart at rest) pressure of 90 m m or above were invited to attend, after approval from their private physician. Each session of the course concentrated on a controllable aspect of hypertension. During the first session Program Coordinator Connie Van Hook, R N., demonstrated and explained use of a blood pressure cuff. own Each class member was then given his-he- r cuff to take home and use during the program. Also, class members each received a journal on which they logged daily blood pressure and its contributing factors. Salt Lake IQ) Our ten month old baby is just learning how to walk and he seems to fall every time I turn around. I swear he must fall 100 times a day, I am concerned that he might be causing himself some injury. My friends laugh at me when I tell them about my fear Am I being foolish, or should I be concerned? ) , (A) Let me begin by saying emphatically, you certainly are not being foobsh. Not when we consider that over 100,000 babies last year were hurt badly enough by falls to require hospitalization. Children are fortunate enough in the fact that their bodies, particularly their spines, are very flexible or this percent of injuries would be much, much higher. On the other hand, it is possible for slight misplacements of the spinal column to begin in early childhood and not manifest themselves as serious spinal defects until later life. When children have falls while learning how to walk, falling out of off kitchen tables, out of adults chairs, infant seats, strollers and from the arms of mother and babysitters, I stronly advise that they should have an examination of their spine and nervous system to make sure they have not done some permanent damage after such accidents. In dealing with children, an ounce of prevention is well worth a pound of cure. Many a teenager with bad posture has the problem because of a tumble he or she took when only a few months old. Your modern chiropractor is well equipped to examine your child and to advise you as to what steps should be taken, if there are any spinal have a problems developing.
