Show 1 J f Page 4B t Review 18, 1981 Davis Girls Show Depth With Victory i Carter Leads Tough Falcon Squad With Record Effort By CINDY SHY Staff Writer Excitement and anticipation CLEARFIELD were in the air as five Davis County schools faced each other, many for the first time this season, in the first annual Davis Track and Field Championships, that provided a challenge for every participant. There was little challenge for Davis girls as they claimed seven firsts of 16 events and earned the team title with 146 points. Layton came only as close as 100 ' points to earn second. Clearfield followed with 85, to with was fourth and Viewmont third, place 69, .Bountiful placed fifth with 59. Honored as the outstanding athlete for the girls division, Bountifuls Becky Bjorn dominated the long distance events as she lapped all competitors in the in the 800 3,200 meter run and claimed three firsts .meter run, 1,600 meter run and the 3,200 meter run. Commenting on the Darts strength, head coach Mary Ann Peterson remarked, We scored in every event, except the 100 and 800. Id say it was a total .learn effort. Im tickled for them. I thought we could win it, she continued, but I didnt think we would be this strong this early in the season. ' Davis dominated the running events, specifically the relays, as the Darts nabbed firsts in the 440 relay, 'jthe 1,600 medley relay and the 1,600 relay. Julie Peterson displayed a suberb individual performance as she placed first in the 100 meter hurdles, took second in the long jump and placed fifth In the high jump. Darlene Stockton, expected by Coach Peterson to burn up the track did just that as she left the field In her dust with a strong finish in the 200 meter run and also had a sound final leg in the 400 meter relay. Kathy Percival grabbed first place in the 400 meter dash, while Carma Smuin claimed first in the shot put "event and took sixth in the discus. i With one of the strongest teams shes had, Layton coach Pat Rawlings group seemed to be traveling in the shadow of the stronger Darts as the Dancers continually placed second, especially in the felays as Layton came in behind Davis in all three relay events Remarking about Clearfields team, Coach Janet Beene noted, We have a small team. We only have 23 girls, but we have quality people. The Falcons swept the short distances with Jodi llman and Staci Judd combining to take first and second, then second and third, respectively, in the 100 4neter dash and the 200 meter dash. But Carter is only an example of why the Falcons dominate they do have others. One of them is Freddie Cook who took a first in the long jump with a leap of 2010, Flint says that Cook ' needs to be consistant at 3 feet to take state, but considering the frigid conditions last weekend, his effort - would have beaten most. Other first place winners for the Falcons were Robert Wilcox in the 800-- , meter and Kevin Porter in the Javelin. The main thing however, that makes the Falcons contenders for the 4A state championship, is their depth. Along with the four firsts, the Falcons racked up six seconds, five thirds, five fourths . and two more firsts in the relay events. Im very pleased they performed so well considering the weather and that we had some injuries to key people, said Flint about his team. They did much better than I expected. I think this meet is a good idea and it should really pick up in future years. Although the put set a new state record, it wont count because the meet wasnt sanctioned. Nevertheless, it did pull in ten points for the Falcon cause and Clearfield went on to win the meet easily over, the remaining Davis County schools. Ive never been around an athlete who works harder at his sport, said Clearfield coach : John .Flint about Carter, He puts everything he has into every meet and it shows. He was a little unhappy about his performance in the discus, so Im glad he did so well in the shot put. Flint says that four colleges" contacted Carter after the meet to see what his interest were concerning college track, but that he wont worry about any decision until after the high school ' season. ar . Carter, senior shot putter and team captain for the Clearfield High track team, is a prime example of how tough the Falcon spikers are going to be this year. ' In the first annual Davis County , SALT LAKE CITY One thing is for sure, the state 'of Utah loves its basketball, and judging from last weeks All-Stvictory in the United Cerebral Palsy Classic, they have reason to be. took an impressive The Utah high school ill-9- 7 to take its first over the Nevada classic championship. Colorado won it last year. Balance and depth proved to be the winning edge for Utah as they battled back from a seven point 'deficit to go ahead by one at the half. After that, some excellent coaching by Jim Jimas of Hillcrest and Sonny Tangaro of Judge Memorial, along with the strong play of Easts Mike Matheson and George Furgis, the Utah squad pulled away and won big in ihe final moments. t. In the consolation game, California came back after losing to Nevada to beat Idaho 103-8- 4 and claim 22 third place. John Martens scored a game-hig-h points to lead California while Rick Maloney and Scott Sinek each added 16. Darrell Hinton and Richard Hobbs scored 15 apiece to lead Idaho. Handy Leads Girls , Utahs prep girls also played some hoop for the same cause, but kept the contest The 4A .stars coupled with the 1A stars to face the 3A and 2A standouts. In that game, Ogdens Anne Handy scored a game high 17 points to lead the 4 combination to a 4 victory. Handy was also the games top rebounder with 10 and was the only player in double figures.
