Show I 4C lakeside Review, Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1981 Uimiqjue Problem For Footfbeoll Af Hill Field Staff Writer Hill Air Force Base has a unique situation in its little league football program. The Fly Boys and their families are members of the Wasatch Front Football League (W.F.F.L.) for football, but they seldom have enough players to effectively compete with teams from other communities along the Wasatch Front. A case in point In the 75 pound division at Hill there were barely enough players to form one team, and most of them were beginners. The rules of the W.F.F.L. specifically state that no one with previous experience can play on the teams. Another rule states that a city or community must come up with a team, before it is alteam. This lowed to organize a left the HUl Fielders in quite a delema. They didnt have enough beginners to form a C team, and what they did have were not of A quality. So the W.F.F.L. Administrators made a special ruling that allowed them to register as a B team, which is somewhere in between and strength. Hill Field has other problems transfer problems. All of the players are children of military parents, which makes them a transient community by any standards. In June, July and August of this year, approximately ten 75 pound candidates moved from Hill Air Force Base, and that many took up residence on Base. But, said Coach Valla Olliver, most of the incoming kids have had little, if any, football experience. We get a few super stars, but most of them have never played football in their young lives. Another disadvantage at Hill Field, involves the wide variety of 75-- C A 75-- 75-- C 75-- ' people and kids that come in. They By BLISS FULLMER 75-- , B A come from every state in the union, and from air bases around the world. By the time they adapt to Utahs style in football, its time for another transfer, and for a new crop of kids. Coach of the 75 pounders on the Hill is Lt. Valla OlUver, who works in the command post on base. Olliver is a graduate of East Carolina University, where he played football. He coached high school football at his old high school, Southern Wayne, in Mount Olive, North Carolina, prior to entering the Air Force. Its a different experience to coach these young beginners, said the coach, but I love it. It takes time and patience. The Lieutenant and his wife, Bertha live on base, and Bertha teaches at the Hill Air Force Base Elemen- tary School. BOUNTIFUL 6 - HAFB I 30-- ' , V: ?' , ' 'V', , c . He estimates that there are more than 7,000 chariot racers in the intermountain West. He is past president of the Beehive Cutters Association. Smitty and her three children, Tracy, Todd and Tisa, race the chariots for Smith. Smitty was the first woman driver in Utah. The training is done by the old man but the racing is done by the kids, Smith says with a grin. One of the biggest thrills of their training and racing careers came just this month when an appaloosa that Don had trained took the Nez mare Perce Triple Crown. The J.L.H. Flightdeck is owned by Carl F. Uheig, of Wells, Nev., and has been trained here by Smith. He took the title while being ridden by Ken Matthews, a Helena Montana high school senior who is an apprentice jockey. The first leg of the three part crown was held in Kallispell, Mont, at the Northwest Montana Fair on Aug. 22. It was three furlongs long. In the first heat J.L.H. Flightdeck came in second but the first place horse had caused an accident 60 yards out of the gate and was disqualified for fouling. They left Kallispell with 5 points towards winning the triple crown. At the Western Mountana Fair in Missoula on Aug. 29, J.L.H. Flightdeck was aced by Onwego Rockwood giving Flightdeck 3 points for a second place. For the final leg of the race held in Hamilton, at the Ravalli County Fair, odds makers gave the race to Onwego Rockwood. Working as a team, the jockey and trainer decided to pace Flightdeck until towards the end of the race to beat the stallions and geldings running. This strategy worked great and she came in first. This gave the mare enough points to win the Nez Perce Crown. It was an especially sweet victory since it is very unusual for a mare to win in such races since they arent normally considered strong enough to race against geld- - ( " "i ?, 0 Coach Olliver lost his third game, Saturday. His greenlings and first lost to Brigham City, then to Bountiful last week. He discovered some silver lining in the dark cloud of defeat, and talked about the play of several kids. He talked about the Maas twins who have played Utah football, since they were old enough to know the game. Ed Maas is the quarterback, and Steve centers the ball to him. Both of them play defensive end. Another pair of brothers include Daryl and Dennis Wilson, who moved here from Okinawaw, and both are working hard for the k team. Pat Collins plays for the team, and defensive back on defense. One fifth grader had never played football in his life, until Saturday. Donmell Hadley, in his r game, was the leading runner for Hill Field. The coach taked about Mike Childs, whom he When he was just 12 years old he was invited to ride his horse in the Ogden parade on July 24. That is not uncommon, except for the fact that he did it walking the horse on its two hind legs all of the way. That even is now a cherished memory recorded in the family photo files. The love that Smith and Smitty have for horses and each other is obvious as they talk together. The excitement of training a winner flashes from Smitty s eyes to her fathers much faster than they can describe those feelings. They talk of 14 or so colts that Smith breaks each winter, training those colts to use their legs in the proper way for balance, training them to set their heads and tails and to put a mouth on them. Smitty starts and her father finishes her thought or he starts and she knows what he is saying before it comes out and their enthusiasm for horses and racing is very contagious. I break most of the colts to the chariot to start with, says Smith. He has trained horses for people from all over the West. He also has entered them in races in many of the Western ' ' ' ' Kit'' Horse Training Means Long Hours years. A well known sculptor, Les Welliver, was commissioned to sculpt a bronze trophy consisting of an appaloosa horse and jockey. It is a limited edition of 10, one for each of the Nez Perce Crown races to be held annually, this years being the first. What a thrill it was to know we had won the first trophy, said Smitty. Smittys own horse, Triple Tees, named for her three children, also made her owners proud at the Montana races. In four out of five open races she took first place and second in the fifth race. For those efforts, Triple Tees brought home a silver bowl for Smitty. team certainly doesnt The plan to stop now. This is really a family affair, said Smith.
