Taking the first or lowest bid just to get the system in and be comfortable may be a big mistake. ' Because a central air conditioning and the distribution system the chance for error is doubled. The wrong size wont work with a correct distribution system and visa versa. A unit that is too small cannot possibly remove enough heat and humidity from the air and may have to operate continuously just to lower the temperature a few degrees. This raises operating costs. Too large a unit can cause the system to cycle or operate only during high heat and humidity levels, causing sudden blasts of cold air with longer periods of high temperature and moisture levels. A completely oversized system (a common fault of some defrosting. High air velocity causes the air back up and frost the coil... because it just cant .be forced through the distribution system. Often, a whistling noise sounds at registers in different parts and permanent damage may occur in the unit. In all cases of improper sizing, the life of the unit is affected. In order for you to get your moneys worth you can never surpass the competence and purpose of a good contractor who specializes in air conditioning. Thats why it might be worth putting up with another week of discomfort in order to be sure that the bid you select is the right one for your home. It will save you money in the long run.
