The positioning of the chair made it easier for her to see what was going on, Mrs. Evans said. It was better than using a mirror to watch the birth, she said, I didnt like the mirrors. The people can get closer, she said. Dr. Craig Hurst from the medical center has worked with the chair twice. Twice is not enough to call an extensive study but the chair was more convenient for the doctor, he said. The chair has the capability to move up and down and to tilt backwards. The patient can be sitting relatively comfortably during the birth and then be treattilted back for ment. The chair is very mobile, and can be used in the new, homey birthing rooms at the hospital. The only problem Head Nurse Janice Staley said she had was pushing the chair "W t. post-partu- m across carpets. The Colorado company that builds the chair says the chair gives more natural childbirth. They say the chair provides the mother with a better physiological position during childbirth ... They cite several advantages to the chair. Gravity assists the birthing process in the sitting position which will help shorten labor time, they say. the new birthing chair at Davis North Medical Center. The chair, using a hydraulic system, can be tilted to assure the comfort of the patient and the convenience of the doctor. NURSE JANICE STALEY shows off 11 MR. INDOOR COMFORT ' W; n. Dec. 1, 1973. The strange chair the North Davis Medical Center received last week is an unusual contraption of cool plastic and humming hydraulics. The chair is used just as a delivery table would be in the last moments of birth. The expectant mother remains in a sitting position which manufacturers claim is more comfortable and doctors in Davis County say is easier for delivery. Three doctors at the hospital have used the chair with six patients during the first week it has been at the center. The doctor who first discovered the chair and asked the hospitals officials to get one, Dr. V. R. Kelley, has not yet had the opportunity to work with it. He said he was very excited about the chair and called it the first big improvement in the obstetrical field since he began working in it 30 years ago. When it is everybody will want one, he said. This is only the second birthing chair to come into Utah. The first one went into Provo. It seems that the patients and the nurses are singing praises for the chair too. Be absolutely sure that all moisture is removed from the air as it is heated and after it passes through the distribution system, convey the dry air to all parts of the house. "Serve continuously (daily) to everyone in the family, and keep repeating this procedure as often as required." For those who fear our sanity, we would like to explain that this "recipe" actually takes place quite automatically every day during the heating season. It's a "recipe" for creating unhealthy, too dry air; and by serving it to the family. Its side effects are often a health or cleanliness problem. As we have explained in previous articles, too dry air allows dirt and dust to settle, robs moisture from clothing, furniture and fixtures, and may lead to sore throats, stuffy noses, chills and dry hacking coughs. Of course, we would like to pass along a recipe for combatting the effects of too dry air in a home. Here it is in a highly consensed form. ... "Buy a PAYNE humidifier. Install on furnace plenum, and to every houseful of air, mix the proper moisture supplied by the humidifier. Distribute moisture to all parts of the house. Serve continuously during the heating season when dry air becomes a problem." For added enjoyment, distribute the PAYNE recipe to all your friends.
