Show StfO 6A Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday January 29, 2002 Commentary i i.. , LETTERS TO THE EDITOR i c d I.- No to Sufco On or about May 9, 1999, rm?ied a package from Jones and Doniille Kngineeringof Richfield. This engineering company apparently represents the Sufco Coal mining business. Their package contained a topographical 1 map of the Sufco coal interests, locations of their access routes, and a proposed new road and modifications of the old dirt road down the Quitchupah Creek. It also contained a quick-claid(sd granting 1 .ti82 acres of my ranch to the county. Far more disturbing than these items was a letter advising me to accept $500 per acre: ... recommends that you diligently consider this offer and avoid both the county Sevier and yourself the expense associated with condemnation proceedings." The land in question is my only access to the creek and the road, 8500 is not e cn close to covering the impacts. I received a letter from Kent R. Petersen, chairman of the Finery County Commission, m June R'tersen stated Finery County has no pluns to initiate condemnation on 1, 1999. proceedings for improving Quitchupah Creek Road. I hope this continues to be the sentiment. have no expectation of a similar letter of assurances from Sevier 1 County. When I called Jones and and asked about the significant archeological sites that would be in the way of their new road, they replied that, The petroglyphs would be moved to a museum." This, I believe, is against the Antiquities Act, a federal law. In a recent newspaper article in the Emery County Progress, Jan. 15,2002, it identified seven significant archeological sites being in harms way if this road is to built. David Sucec, director, DCS project, stated in the May 10, 2000 Emery County Dcmille Progress that the Quitchupah Creek Junction Rock Art Site will be destroyed if the proposed coal haul road is allowed to be built in the POLITICALLY CORRECT He's canyon." The second alternative follows Quitchupah Road but meet 8 Highway 10 at a different point; where, I do not know. Quoting the same January 2002 article: This route involves fencing along the road with five underpasses for cattle and game. ...This route has 29 archeological site swith 1 1 that will be impacted and six of these are considered significant." The third plan, the Water Hollow route includes, 19 archeological sites all of which can be avoided." I have serious doubts that these sites will not be impacted. The sites encompass everything in sight and within hearing distance. Try as I may to see the coal mines perspective, it comes down to just money. There is no evidence that the known (and heaven forbid unknown) sites figure in any positive way with the coal mines plans. Our heritage and just SO I SAID HE COULD It has only been a few days since made New Year's resolutions and I trudge out the door to run, determined to got in shape before our trip to Mexico. Before I tell you the rest of the story 1 want to make it perfectly clear, that 1 testosterone level is as high as any other healthy my American male. I ran ate a steak, bacon, four eggs, watched VVF, scratched, and even hooted at the neighbor lady when she was shaking her rug on the front porch. But I am really qu ite beside myself this morning. After my run, hopped in the shower and could not find my normal shampoo. Instead I found myself surrounded by cutesy fruity bottles of personal hygiene products. I know 1 shouldn't let my curiosity go, but I did need to wash my hair so I started grabbing bottles to see which one 1 should use. I was being cautious, as I didnt want to lather up with Nair...again. I grabbed a bottle of some purple stuff called Suave Shampoo - Lavender. The bottle of Lavender claimed it had lYission Flower & Vitamin B5 and that it five miles, 1 no-na- "maintains natural health and shine of normal hair." liked the sound of that "passion" stuff, so I decided that might be the one for me. 1 Then I noticed the NEW VOS" it said that it was LMPROVED" and was called Vanilla Blossom." It claimed that it Protects from everyday stress. Well, my too kind and loving wife is always saying that I am too stressed so I added a dab. I could almost feel the stress float down the drain as I was lost in the fragrant field of sweet vanilla, honeysuckle and chamomile. I dont normally use so much shampoo in one shower so I decided I had better condition my hair. Fortunately, I found a bottle of Pantene Pro-it must be serious stuff because it says Pro right there on the bottle. It claimed it would, condition your hair all the way to the tips, without weighing hair down. You get hair thats so healthy it shines." Well I kinda wanted shiny hair, besides it seemed that heavy hair would give you a headache. Maybe, this is wrhy my too kind and lovingwife always has a headache. I like to eat apricots as they keep me regularso I thought this was probably a good one for someone my age. But I was confused and not sure where I wanted to start applying it, because the bottle read, Gently exfoliates dull surface cells to reveal flowing, fresh, healthy skin." I wasnt sure what exfoliates was...I mean it sounds like a medical term. I wasnt even sure that it was legal to exfoliate in Utah. However, since I was in the privacy of my own home I figured it would be hard to prove that I had been exfoliating by myself so I decided to ' push the envelope and get exfoliated today in my own private fragrant field of sweet vanilla, honeysuckle and chamomile! Irechecked the door. It was time to get out of the shower and leave my fragrant field of sweet vanilla, honeysuckle and chamomile. I was feeling so darn pretty' that I just couldnt help myself and I grabbed the Clariol Herbal Essence Styling Gel. I mean who wouldnt die for extra hold for shape and control? I felt better just knowing that the Fresh Herbal scent invigorates the senses." Really, it made me go quite mad. Besides, at my age anything that can invigorate usually requires a prescription and Is obtained at the pharmacy. Later when I was getting dressed, the thought actually crossed my mind that my too kind and loving wifes periwinkle skirt Is 60000 cute. After dressing, when I walked by the mirror I turned to see if the jeans I was wearing made my butt look fat. And you know, I was almost tempted to change my outfit. Each time the road is traveled, I pray to the Lord that the trip will be a safe one for me and my family. Again, I get on my knees and ask that please, if Im not in control of the steering wheel, would you watch over those close to me that they will be safe. The travelers on this highway. Not recreation vehicles, commuters from the county (getting to be more all the time), and 300 coal trucks per hour. Intense! Safety should be the first concern on our roads. Other issues need to be addressed in their order of importance. One such issue is the perspective of a vacationer traveling our highways. Does the RV driver enjoy dodging coal trucks as he travels to a scenic designation? I think not. But the argument, one hears so often, makes so much sense. We are not a big population area such as Salt Lake Valley. Those people can justify a Legacy Highway. Much more tax money. Many more automobiles up there. narrow path across this area scares the hell out of me. I hate that my teen daughter drives here. Understanding the desire of the public, as explained by the elected officials, Recreation is a resource to be developed in and around our county. Recreation seekers travel the same expressway as do the coal industry transports. How can they navigate an RV and keep their wheels out of the ditches? There is no room for ask, can we a justify Transportation Highway down Quitchupah Canyon? Correct, it saves the truckers 55 miles distance traveling. Sevier County will fund it and a toll will be charged to the trucking company to pay for it. Is this not a private road only until it gets to a bigger, better public taxed Highway Seems to me there are ways to sort the traffic out and make a better situation with the roads we have now. Perhaps widen them, make highway bypass roads around our towns, or get the coal trucks on their own private highway all the wray to the power plant. How, may I SR-1- 0. 8 d . ' . , E n . It can limit the use one child makes of talents. Another child may decide that fault-findi- Parents want so badly to have their children be good, to have their children do the right thing. Yet often the parents work so hard at it, they make it difficult for the child either to be happy while trying to do what parents expect or the child gives up and doesnt try. Sometimes the church and school add to the pressure. These informing entities may note every slip and magnify it. They may never, or seldom, comment on the good, the positive. Sometimes they forget to tell the child. Or, sometimes they dont see the good or the intention to do good. Sometimes the no comment on the good is deliberate in the mistaken notion it would harm the childs sense of self. In the case of the last reason, the parent doesnt want the child to think too well of himherself; doesnt want the child to have a big head." They intend to keep the child humble in the mistaken idea of what that word means. The sad thing is that, . heshe is unable to do anything good, so why try. The child who the negative messages that the parents send may become, what is termed, scrupulous. That child examines eveiy little thing heshe does and always perceives he she has not done welL Often the scrupulous person sees the not done well as actually having done, not just poorly, but evil. It can get to the point the person will not believe they are doing well no matter who tries to tell them they are. Even things they do accidentally, without thought, are seen as bad, no matter what the action is. Their life is miserable. So how can parents be sure their children do not have these negative traits and, at the same time, teach them all the positive things, such as being good morally, being responsible, being industrious, etc.? A basic action and attitude is for the parent(s) to talk about and model what the parent(s) expect. Recognize how heshe deals with hisher own shortcomings and make a change, if need be. Notice and praise the good things the child does, not excessively, but explicitly. The parent needs to be aware if heshe is more negative than positive. Even correction can be done positively to build And the latter is what parents w'ant to build, if they are to bring up healthy, wholesome children. The children need to love themselves so they can love others; so they are willing to try things knowing they can do many things, not perfectly, but well enough to make this a better world. yw f 'm i r, Letters to the editor should focus oh public issuss-rathethan private personalities or entities.
