She was born on Dec. 4, 1021, in Green River; she just celebrated her 80th Birthday. i Mary is the second child of James and Mamie King Fisher. She has a brother, Bill Fisher, now deceased, and has a sister, Anna Averett of Price. She had a long, hard childhood that made her a strong-wille- d person. She has always fought for the underdog. Mary married Delmar H. (Pete) Powell on March 16, 1940. From this marriage three children were born: Wayne Powell (Price), Kathy Farnsworth (Green River), and Ruby Robinson (Price). Mary has 10 grandchildren and 13 They are all her pride and n. joy. Pete wmrked for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad for many years. They lived in such places as Desert, and Floy, before moving back to Green River to stay. Pete passed away on Oct. 18, ' ' I 1978. Mary worked for many years in cafes and at the missile base in the cafeteria She loved to cook, and used to experiment with her meals at the cafeteria. When the desire to cook finally faded, she to cleaning and renting at the tender age of 59, doing this work until she was ready to hang it up and retire. She was a senior volunteer worker at the John Wesley Powell Museum until a knee replacement, wrent rooms made it impossible for herTb volunteer any more. For many years she did crochet and embroidery, until her fin- gers w ouldnt bend and her eyesight made it impossible for her to count the stitches. Now her greatest passion in life is to read books. Her love of reading has made her one of Jeopardys long time contestants and the best customer of the Green River Library. RECOGNITION The dean of the School of Technology, Trades, and Industry at the Utah Valley State College has sent recognition to William Payne for his hard work. Payne has attained High Honors rank, and a place on the Deans List for the fall semester 2001. The letter of recognition from Dean Martin gave praise and recognition for Paynes efforts in receiving excellent grades in his class with an overall grade point average of 3.86 in the MT major, and for his dedication, persevere ance, copimltment, intellectual capacities and his desire to learn. Will, a graduate of Emery High School, is the son of Val and Bernice Payne of Cleveland. Light the Fire WITHIN The governors Olympic program was performed by both Cleveland and Ferron Elementary schools on Thursday. Students performed inspiring music and recited text that encouraged them to be the best they can be. |
