The economies of many of the small towns on the Colorado Plateau are vulnerable because they are dependent on a single industry such as miningor logging, said Tracy Marafiote, a member of the Sierra Clubs Utah Chapter Executive Committee. The primary goal of the Sierra Club in offering these scholarships is to stimulate the thinking of young people who will carry the responsibility for the economic future of their communities. Marafiote explained that scholarship recipients would bring new ideas for developing sustainable and stable economies for the small towns of the Colorado Plateau in Utah. Upon graduation from college, returning students will enrich their communities with talents and new approaches to economic development. We are asking applicants to write an essay, no longer than one thousand words, about the future of their community, said Lawson LeGate, Southwest senior representative of the Sierra Club. Students should identify problems and suggest solutions. Although we want to know about any kinds of challenges the local community may face, we are particularly interested in envi- ronmental problems and their possible solutions."
