Show Taking A Leap Clearfields James Moore and Hal Schofield went into orbit last Saturday at Ben Lomond with high leaps in the pole vault and high jump. Laytons Tom Kidd (left) also was leaping high as he set a school record in the long jump. keith duncancommentary Flint Leads Falcon Boys Hansen Calls To First Invitational Title At It Quits enough about him. He's as dedicated an athlete as I've ever been affiliated with. The guy spends four to five hours every night working on his form. He may not have the greatest natural ability as far as speed goes, but hes got the biggest heart around. Moore has now broken the 14 foot barrier and you have to think all the mental barriers that go with it are over with now. ANOTHER impressive mark set last Saturday was that of Craig Carter in the shot put. The Falcons talented sophomore had a throw of 55 feet and 2 inches which was nearly a foot and a half longer than By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports OGDEN - For the first time in Clearfield High track and field history, the Falcons have now won a major track and field invitational. -- Layton High thing else, at least felt. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON - This summer when I begin devoting some of my column inches to prep football previews. one place I'll stop for sure is gold ole Layton High. -- BUT FOLKS, I can tell ya right now that when I park my car and get out this August, there will be something missing. It might be like stopping at the corner of Main and North Temple and finding Temple Square gone. I'll feel that way because of Gary Hansen's decision to step down as the coch of Layton High football. For the past 12 years he's been something like an institution there and for many, including myself, it will take awhile to get used to his absence. HANSENS decision to give up a part of his life that has been as dear, to him as anything, actually came several months ago when he notified his principal and the superintendent. But now its being made public as the job he leaves vacant is being opened for applications. The reason for leaving? Well, if s rather evident. After 12 years a head coach and 16 years as a coach in general at Layton High, Hansen is ready for something new. HANSEN himself answered that by saying, Ill play some golf with my wife, get back to some serious hunting and spend some time with the kids. Its like (Ernie) Jacklin said when he stepped down, its time to drop back and do some things you've always wanted to do. (Jacklin was the veteran Roy coach who called it quits after this past season.) ITS PERHAPS been 15 years now since Ive had more than a week break between one program or the other. If it hasnt been athletics then its been drivers education or my naval service responsibilities. Running the summer weight program was like running a dairy herd in terms of time commitment. You just couldnt go anywhere because you had to be there morning and evening. BUT I HAVE enjoyed it, its been something that will be a part of me as long as I live. But things have changed, including attitudes and I figured it was just a good time for me to get out of it. Jacklin contributed a few words about Hansen's decision and said, After a number of years of coaching, if s just time to do some- - thats the way LED BY the veteran John Flint, the Falcons amassed some 70 points to easily outdistance Alta I AS FAR AS Gary goes, 1 have nothing but admiration for him. He was always tough to compete against because his kids played good ball. heads-u- p fundamental foot- AND HANSEN does feel that way. He voiced it by saying, Maybe Im biased in saying this, but I dont think anyone can influence a kids life more in high school than what a coach can. Weve had a bunch of kids go on and be darn successful in football, in fact a lot more than the few names most people hear about. Duane showed me a lot of guts in getting third, said Flint. 4-- A THE FALCONS in winning the Icebreaker Invitational, snared more first place victories than theyd ever done at a major meet. Ricky Smith took top honors in the 400 meters, James Moore was the best in the pole vault, Craig Carter was tops in the shot put and the mile relay team was at least four seconds faster than anyone else in the state. I BELIEVE the top four or five teams were established last weekend, said Flint, But by no means does anyone have anything all locked up. And Flint was right. Had all the and entries been separated from the Alta would have finished only 8 points behind the Falcons and Layton who was third 2-- A 3-- A 4-- BUT WHAT pleases me even more is the number of kids weve had graduate that have gone on missions for their church, become bishops or become community leaders in their chosen fields. One such player of Garys was Brandon Flint who played three brilliant years at Layton and four more for the Brigham Young University Cougars. Brandon is now finishing up his schooling at BYU and is patiently awaiting the NFL draft on May 1 . BRANDON HAD a few comments about his former coach and friend and said, The first thing that comes to my mind about Coach Gary is his ability to make men out of boys by teaching them how to work hard. It didn't matter what team he had, and whether they were winning or losing, they wer always in great shape. He wasnt afraid to spend some time at it. I TALKED to Gary about two weeks ago and he said something that has really stuck with me. He commented that he hopes everything goes well for me in the upcoming draft and said one of the things that brings him the most pleasure now is getting to follow his old players in their endeavors. Ill remember that as I go along, itll make me strive a little harder. During Hansens 12 years as the head coach with the Lancers, he record. What a day for Pole Vaulter James Moore who cleared 6 to set a new Clearfield High record. Moore became the first jumper in Falcon history to go over 14 feet and he won the Icebreaker Invitational in the process. I JUST hope we can stay heal- thy now, 14-- said Flint as his team prepared for the Weber State Track and Field Invitational to be held this weekend at Wildcat Stadium. Ricky Smith was the top point getter for the Falcons last weekend as he captured the 400 meters, was fourth in the 200 meters and was the anchor to the winning mile relay team. I GUESS you could say it was a pretty fair day, said Smith who Jom Puts Layton set a new school record last Wednesday in the 400 meters at 49:55. That record eclipes the one set by Bubba Conley just last season. Smiths time in the Icebreaker Invitational was 50.40 and the mile relay had a clocking of 3:31.03. It was the first time wed ever run together, said Smith of the 1600-mettandem, Evans is in his first year of running and Don is just a sophomore. RODNEY RUYBAL started the winning mile relay group off, followed by Doug Evans, then Don Gladfelter and finally Smith. Said Gladfelter about the final race, I wanted to give Ricky the baton first. And he did as he passed up Laytons entry in the third leg. Hal Schofield captured first in the high jump and he admits that jumping last year against people like Cory Swenson and Sie Moore really put some pressure on me to get better. Hals jump of 6 won the event and he narrowly missed at 7 'A which would have been a new school record. Scott Wallace still holds the Clearfield record in the high jump at Eve got a personal goal to get 6--9 before the end of the year," said Schofield. ONE OF the clearly impressive performances of the day had to be James Moores effort in the pole AND IF Layton does get a little better, theyll perhaps have what it takes to move them a little closer to front running Clearfield High. The Lancers were just two points out of valut. He cleared 14-- 6 which shattered the old school record of 13-- 6 set by Lane Fishburn last season. It was also the first time in Clearfield High history that a jumper had gone over 14 feet outdoors. Moores personal best last season which he bested by two was feet last weekend. Moores try at just missed as his nose hit the bar on the final jump. I have to credit Bart Thompson (the Falcons new assistant coach) second place where Alta finished in - 12-- 6 14-- 9 for some help. Hes been helping me release a little better which has put a few more inches on. Thompson was an pole vaulter at Weber State where he went over 15 feet several times. FLINT WAS proud of Moore too, saying, I just cant say Continued next page along, said Jones, The kids and I were generally pleased with their performances last weekend. Kidd had four jumps on Friday over 22 feet in the long jump, which helped him snare second place behind Marty Haws of Hillcrest. The 22-- jump that gave Tom second place also established a new school record in 4 his name. TOM ALSO came back late Saturday afternoon to help the mile relay team take second place behind Clearfield. Kidd ran the anchor leg on that tandem.
