Barts Shock 4 A9ers Second Mace By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports Rees who broke away under her basket with just 10 seconds left to give the Darts the opening night win, The Bengals were much taller than the shorter Darts, so much of Davis success came off some pretty dependable outside shooting. For the evening, Michelle Bateman led the Lady Darts with 12 points. Diana Peterson had 11 and Angie Norris and Rees each had 10 apiece. 48-4- 7. - SALT LAKE CITY The Davis High women's basketball team accomplished a miracle last week, even though they didnt win the state championship. ONE OF the players parents summed it up best, We all expected last years soccer team to do well, if not to win it all. And we knew Coach (Ward) Sawleys football team had a chance to be state champions, but not very many folks at all gave the women a thinking chance of being a state finalist. It was a pleasant surprise to a lot of people. Yes, it was a surprise. Even for Coach Ann Gilbert it was a surprise. This is the furthest that any of my teams have gone and this is a team that I least expected it to happen with, she said. THE DAVIS gals made a lot of believers out of a lot of people in winning their first three state tournagames of the 1984 womens ment played last week at Murray High. The hopes for a state title however, came to a standstill as a powerful Highland team posted a 1 victory over the Lady Darts in the Saturday night championship game. It was evident that we didn't play as well against Highland, as we did in our first three games. They (Highland) just had our number this year, said Coach Gilbert after her Davis Darts lost to the Highland team for the third time this season. The Rams edged out the Darts for the Region Four title with the two previous wins. 4-- A THE 0 win over Layton was sweet and game propelled the Darts into the semi-finagainst West Jordan. The West Jordan game was perhaps one of the best games that weve played all year 1 victory was long, said Gilbert. The effort of combined the by sparked Peterson and Norris. Keri Gardner chipped in 1 1 points to also aid the cause. 47-4- 57-5- THAT OF COURSE set the stage for the championship bout with the Rams who after beating Davis for the third time ended the season with an impressive 10-- league record and 24-- 0 overall mark. Ive got a special place in my heart for these kids, said Gilbert after it was all over, bunch of kids. Theyre a close-kn- it eral times we werent ready for em. I think Michelle gained some more confidence in her shooting too. Overall, I think because of Gardner and Bateman coming on strong in the end, we began being a much stronger balanced team. BOTH GARDNER and Bateman return again next season. The three main substitutes for the year were Tammy Duke, Cindy Sorenson and Nancy Kirtpatrick, Duke is also a senior, but Sorenson and Kirtpatrick also return for another season. I DONT know why things happen like they do, but this sorta of thing will do nothing but aid our future teams at Davis. Despite our lack of size; we proved to ourselves that we can play with anyone. Last week was amazing and it will do wonders for us, said Gilbert. Lady Lancers Fail To Place 0 54-4- BUT THE final loss to Highland isnt what people are talking about. The big news is how the Lady Darts entered the tournament with an record, but still got by Brighton, Layton and West Jordan and into the finals. The last three weeks of the season we began playing real well, especially well since the last defeat to Highland. 1 felt good about the kids and the fact they were playing the best they could. For the first time since Ive been coaching, I finally had a team that started to peak just at the right time. 11-- a -- ... a team that I least expected it to happen with. Coach Ann Gilbert 8 BUT I DIDNT expect anything to happen like what did. We earned the win over Brighton (Davis first tourney game) and seemed to get some momentum after it. It was just a classic win that gave us some confidence going into the tough Layton game. About the Layton game, 1 felt the Lancers were riding pretty high going into the tournaloss to ment, especially after their the for Clearfield and region beating Highland championship. They were rolling going into the tournament but we saw them play pretty flat in the opening night against Cottonwood and that helped us a little bit," said Gilbert. one-poi- one-poi- IN THE OPENING gave against Brighton, the Davis gals had to be thankful for Sonya SALT LAKE CITY - No one expected what happened to the Lady Lancers in the girls state basketball tournament, just like no one expected what happened to the gals from Davis High. GILBERT TALKED individually about her players, saying, Angie (Norris) was shooter. She was tough outside all year long, probably leading us in scoring or very close to it. "Diana (Peterson) was another one we could always count on. She was excellent at getting real good rebound position, especially when, She just held you consider that she is only her own against the bigger players. 5-- 7. 4-- CLEARFIELD in the championship game of Region One, the Lancers appeared to be one of the primary favorites to be battling for the 1984 womens crown. But things got started on a shaky note, as Layton used a sluggish performance to beat a so-s- o Cottonwood team. The win boosted the Lancers into the quarterfinals where they fell 0 to the Davis Darts. Everything plagued the Lancers in the loss to Davis, everything from foul trouble to poor shooting percentages. 47-4- LAYTONS SEASON came to a crashing halt when they were eliminated from the tournament by Skyling, In a tense moment against the Rams on Saturday night, Coach Ann Gilbert instructs her Lady Darts. In Gilberts own words she said, This is the furthest that any of my teams have gone and this is a team that I least expected it to happen with. But she loves her players, calling them a very close bunch. Gilbert, formerly Ann Avondet, once was a Weber State basketball star. 72-5- 2. KERI (GARDNER) really improved over the course of the year. I think it was her play that really sparked us over the last few weeks of the season. She gained a lot of confidence in her ballhandling skills and quarterbacking skills. You could just see her confidence level come way up. Sonya (Rees) was always hustling. She' really came up with some amazing plays at times. We loved her hustle on defense and nobody around had a better bank shot than hers. MICHELLE (BATEMAN) was new to our program from Timpview, but she blended in quickly. Her pauigjiru awesome, in fact sev Clearfield Finishes Seventh - SALT LAKE CITY Margo Jones, whos been around womens basketball for a long time, stated that funny things will happen at state tournaments. FUNNY MIGHT be retranslated as strange. Davis High came from no where to battle for the state crown, Layton was a favorite and didnt even place and the Lady Fal r cons, a favorite to begin with, could do no better than seventh. The Lady Falcons got things started on the right foot by beating Olympus in the first round It was junior Natalie Nye who game, helped Clearfield in the first game by scoring a dozen points. BIT CLEARFIELDS hopes for a state title 44-3- 4. came to a stop with a loss in the quarterfinal round. But the Lady Falcons did come back in the third night of play, by beating Box Elder 5 and advancing into the Friday 5th and 7th place game against Skyline. It was there that Skyline came out the winner, For the year, Clearfield ended with a glossy 17-- 6 record. 47-4- 54-4- 7. |
