Show Falcons Rolling, Darts, Lancers Searching that both Layton and Weber would rise up in league and beat some people, despite their records. poor : Layton, Clearfield and Davis will finish their basketball schedules respective this Friday night, before preparing for their league schedules which all begin on Friday, Jan. 6. pre-seas- pre-seas- Falcons at Woods Cross 73Q p.m. Darts at - Coach Craig Hansen CLEARFIELD Judge led his teams 79-6- 5 cal- win over Davis High last week, our best performance of the year." The victory moved the Falcons record to 3 with only one more practice game left. The final game takes place this in Cross against the Woods Friday evening defending state champions. Bulldogs 7t30 p.m. - pre-seas- After losing to Highland last LAYTON mark week by ten points, Layton's But if the record of a disappointstood at could be forgoting and frustrating ten for a moment, Layton fans could get real excited about the speedy return of Tom Kidd to the line-u- 6-- pre-seas- pre-seas- -- said Hansen as his team rested through the Christmas holiday. Weve had some spurts, but that win was fairly solid. We also like the fact it came right before league gets started. I think were getting ready for one of the most balanced Region One schedules weve ever been a part of. I think the team also liked the fact the win came right after one of our worst performances loss to Ogden. We the of the spent some time talking about the loss against Ogden and what we'd have to do as a team to improve. It was just a good thing for all of us to come back in another road game and play as well as we did. finish, THIS FRIDAY the Darts will challenge Judge in a game in Salt Lake City. The Bulldogs have two players over 7 who Gardner says are excellent players. The loss to Clearfield became costly at the time since the Davis team lost both Ryan Smith and Jeff Sampson to injuries. Both however, are doing better and enjoying the much needed Christmas holiday to nurse those injuries back to healthy situations. Smith sustained torn ligaments in an ankle and Sampson sustained a deep muscle bruise in his lower back. If we get those kids back, well be alright, said Gardner. Highland. This Friday night, the Lancers will travel to game of the Brighton for their final year. WHY ALL THE fuss about Kidd? Well it just happens that Tom is Doug Moons type of guttype player. He may sy, always going-at-y- a never score more than 20 points a game and may never get 12 rebounds a game, but Moon likes this guys hustle and determination. Kidd is just the kind of player that any coach in the state wouldnt mind having on this club. Without him, the team would probably suffer in more ways than one. Were struggling right now in a few areas," said Tom. But I know were going to come back and surprise some people. I THINK weve got some guys on the club that havent hit their potential yet, haven't really come anywhere near it. Look at Steve Pearce for example. He hasn't found his shooting touch yet, but when he does hell be getting 20 points per game. The same with the big guys under the basket. Our minds just havent been on it. Maybe Rex Brimhall, the sophomore can come in and spark us a bit under the basket. SENIOR CENTER, John Grotzky had one of his finest games of the year against Davis. The pre-seas- 4 center scored more than 20 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Jeff Parry, Curtis Cook and Hal Schofield were crafty in getting the ball inside to John. I thought John was fairly effective against Ogden, but we didnt get him the ball enough. But against Davis, once John started hitting inside, the defense would have to collapse and wed have instead of said Hansen. the 18 and It was the finest rebounding performance of the season for Grotzky, an area which really pleases his coach. CLEARFIELDS bench continued to shine too. Steve Labato, Greg Boykin, Eric West, Mike Call and Troy Markham continue to come off the bench for the Falcons and give the team strength. As Coach Hansen mentioned, When one of those subs come in, we really dont lose anything. I know that and the team knows it. About the rest of the league, Hansen says fans can expect one of the most balanced nt-wise releagues in history. cords right now dont mean diddle. Four teams from our region will go to state and right now there is no way I could honestly predict who wouldnt go, he said. Hansen was positive 6-- and Smith down . THE LOSS OF Sampson the stretch of the Clearfield game hurt Davis comeback. chances of making a We had one bad quarter against Clearfield and besides that, we played them even through most of the game. Then we are forced to play the last quarter and a half without two of our starters. You take Schofield and Grotzky away from Clearfield and see what happens if they are trying to make a comeback on someone. full-fledg- PLAYING WELL for the Darts in the second half of the game was junior Casey Lloyd who contributed 18 points in that last 24 minutes. KIDD, WHO had sufered a bad tear to one his ankles during Layton's football game with Clearfield last fall, reinjured the same n basketankle a few weeks back in a ball game with Kearns. Tom described it as, nearly destructive." When I came down on it in the Kearns game, it almost felt on fire and I thought for a moment that I may have broken it. But a few days after the swelling had gone down, the doctor said it was just a bad pull and said if I were to keep off it for a week, I might be able to get back out there. And he did stay off of it, and was back in the line-u- p against of 70-6- 5. n, 6-- But Clearfield did deserve to beat us that night, they played a great game from start to finish. But then again, it doesnt disappoint me that we lost the game, losing it without two of our starters. Who knows, it might happen to them the next time that we play, said Gardner. pre-seas- ITS NICE to play one good, from start to KAYSVILLE - Mike Gardner, the veteran basketball coach at Davis High, says he couldn't have scheduled two better teams to prepare his club for the upcoming league slate than both Clearfield and Judge. Both have outstanding teams this year and theyll be just right to prepare us for East on Jan. 6," said Gardner. : 6. tale- Clearfields Eric West (32) made some pretty impressive block shots against the Davis Darts last week, but on this one Davis Jeff Sampson slips by him for two points. The Falcons won their sixth pre-seas- game in beating Davis 79-6- 5. Pre-seas- LAYTON WILL open their new region schedule on Jan. 6 at home against Bonneville. Wrestling Turns Its Attention To League The next major prep wrestling tournament will take place Friday, Jan. 6 and Saturday, Jan. 7 at Brighton High with the annual Brighton High Wrestling Tournament taking place. BUT PRIOR to the major tournament, Clearfield, Layton and Davis will all be entering their respective league dual matches. Clearfield and Layton will be taking on Region One foes while Davis travels to meet Bountiful High. Layton is the defending dual meet and region meet champion in Region One, but will have plenty of challenges for the title this year with Box Elder in their region and the improvement of Clearfield. DAVIS IS the defending dual meet and region meet champion in Region Four and should once again be considered the favorite to repeat in those categories this year. Viewmont will once again give the Darts their biggest competition. Falcons Swimmers Raise n $1,668 In Swim-A-Tho- - CLEARFIELD Clearfield High swimmers have defied everyone else in coming up with the most unique way in starting their new season. THE CLUB, under the direction of Fred Lange, recently was sponsored by their community, parents and friends in an annual Swim-A-Thwhich took place at the Clearfield Municipal Pool. Members of the Clearfield High swimming club swam a minimum of 200 lengths or for two hours, which ever came first. After all of that swimming, the students had raised some $1 ,668 in pledges. The team members say they will donate $250 of that money to help support the 1984 United States Olympic Swim team. The remainder of the funds will pay for the clubs expenses for traveling away to meets and defray the costs of expenses in equipment and other supplies. on most intense The 1984 prep wrestling season features some of the rivals could these of in Many rivalries years. many local individual find themselves beating it out in the finals of the state championship. s Pictured above is Clearfields Shad Ragan and Layton Rodney 1 n in head-othe category.
