ROUNDWORMS The signs of worms include unthnftvness, bloated appearance, cough (due to larva migraung in tee lungs), vomiting and diarrhea. Worms also get the blame for many conditions they dont cause, such as dragging the rear along the floor, ana senous illnesses. Since older pets develop some resistance to round worms, severe parasitism occurs primanly in young animals. Transmission from one animal to another is by direct contact with the stool of an infected animal. The mature worms in the dogs intestine release eggs which pass with the stool into the environment. Another animal ingests these eggs by eating the stool or becoming soiled by it and ingesting the eggs while grooming diemsehes. The eggs hatch in the intestine into larva which migrate throughout the bodv, eventuallv reaching the lungs where they are coughed up and swallowed, and then develop into adults in the intestine. The migrating larva can cross the placenta m pregnant animals causing puppies to be bom with worms. Fortunately, roundworms can be easily diagnosed and treated by taking a stool sample to your veterinarian. If you have questions, contact your veterinarian, as your pets health depends on it.
