Show AUGUST 24, 1983 Perhaps the Darts are the odds on favorite to win the region title, but they aren't counting any chickens before they're hatched. One game at a time is their philosophy. That was the key to their region march last year. But all things considered, Davis is the premadona. DAVIS I sonnel: OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINES. The interior lines both offensively and defensively have some pretty solid players to work around. DUNCAN . By KEITH OUTLOOK: Clipper Sports KAYSV1LLE - It isnt the experience that the nucleus of Davis High football players have that should scare the opposition, although it helps. It isnt the skill at running the double wing or even the quickness that the linemen possess. -- 3? Last season the Dart linemen were noted for their quickness and this year Sawley says we wont find any difference in their quickness, if anything theyll be even quicker. The weights during the off season simply put on more lead body mass and not fat. WHAT SHOULD scare the opposition to death is the undeniable will to win sketched deep in the hearts of every player that helped bring a region championship to Davis last fall. Whats really scary is the fact that these same players that helped bring glory to Davis last season, filled more than half of the starting positions in 1982. In all, the Darts bring back eight men who started either one or two positions on last years 2 club. And outside starters, there are another half a dozen players that saw fair amounts of action that are back in uniform again. LEADING THE way in the trenches are some very experienced seniors who started nearly every game last year. You might start 205 who along with with Jeff Sampson at 190, were named to the Greg McNabb, 6-squad. Sampson and McNabb could turn out to be two of the finest tackles in the league as well as the state. Theyll start both offensively and defensively unless some promising juniors step up to help them out on one end. Sean Kilgrow returns after starting on the line a good portion of 1982. He injured his knee just prior to playoffs but is ready and healthy at 175. this point. Kilgrow is 6-- 0, 9-- WINNING enhanced winning, just ask any of the returnees. Greg McNabb for instance, wholl start again as an offensive and defensive tackle, commented, We got by Clearfield just barely and after beating Viewmont it was six more in a row. I think were up to do it again. Weve got the people to make it happen. Every indication so far points at what could be another successful season for Ward Sawley who is entering his fifth year as the head coach. Sawley hasnt predicted anything but he saw a world of contrast when Aug. 15th rolled around for to begin. Players were much more experienced and they knew what the coaches wanted. The same hard work was taking place, but its making the whole machine run a little smoother with ample amounts of people who know what you want. 6-- KURT Cottrell looks to start at center. Robert Reid, 5-- 6-- 0, 6-- 0, 0, 5-- 8, SAWLEY WAS high on his junior corp of linemen too. He admitted that anyone of them, if they really wanted it, could seriously make push for a starting job. He talked first about Erik Thompson, 175, who Sawley said was probably the strongest on the team and one of the quicker linemen. Hell be hard to keep out of there. Erick has a good shot at starting one way, said Sawley. Sawley was also impressed with a new From Florida, Steve Pearson 215 move-i- n who has learned the system quickly, in addition hes high on Jubal Frost 185; Rudy Meacham 225; Andy Neff 63, 185; Roger 190 and Scott Ward Clawson 150. RUNNINGBACKS. Experience and more experience. Thats the way to describe the Darts offensive backfield. Back for another year are two starters off 165 and last years club in Ryan Smith, 170. Sawley and the crew begin their league schedule on Sept. 16 in another road contest against East High. An interesting tidbit that probably means little or nothing, depending on who you talk to, is the fact the Dart coaching staff is one of the few staffs in their league or staffs that will be e faced in games, that has not undergone any change in personnel. dr t i Li jtr 6-- 6, 6-- 2, 6-- 0, 6-- 3, non-leagu- THE SAME people are back again to assist Sawley and try to bring a fifth consecutive region title to the school. The man Sawley is 165. going with is senior Steve Sargent, 6-Sargent, as just a junior, was the winner of the prestigious Doc Barnes Award last year. Through the summer Sargent has been throwing hard and long, enough now that Sawley is pretty impressed with his accuracy and zip. Junior Keith Hunsaker, 180, is so big and has looked so good, that Sawley expects him to see some time catching the ball. 6-- MILLER can also catch the ball as can Andy 170. Kech, At tight end the Darts will probably start Chris Stevenson who missed a good part of last year because of a concusion. Hes eager and ready to get back into things, said Sawley of Stevenson. Stevenson will also see some time at inside linebacker. Stevenson is and 180. 6-- 0, 5-- LINEBACKERS. Starter Jeff Hammer is back along with Stevenson at inside spots. Both have a good knowledge of the position and will be backed up by several good juniors. Outside linebackers. Smith and Woodward, were starters last year, and bring a wealth of experience. These spots are fairly solid at this point. If James Warden can come back from a knee injury, he may be the Darts candidate as their place kicker. If he does come back from it, hell have to battle Sampson who kicked the Darts last seven PATs last year. THE OUTLOOK. Perhaps the Darts are the odds on favorite to win the region title, but they themselves appear content to take each game one at a time. That was a key in their march last year. Sawley has what it takes to keep things under control and all indicators point to another region championship. 5-- 8, j : 170. 0, BACKING SARGENT up are a couple of players that could very well see some action are juniors Casey Lloyd, 6-- 155 and Greg 150. Mike started at a pass catching position until he suffered from appendicitis later in the 160, but the .year. Hes not real big at coaches like his excellent blocking ability that keys the double wing. Woodward may be one of the fastest people on the team, has good hands, and is quick. He also plays outside linebacker on defense. 0, DEFENSIVE SECONDARY. Miller was a starter here last season and Kinard saw a pretty good amount of playing time later in the season. Theyll anchor positions again in 83. Other defensive secondary candidates include Keach; Randy Smith, 1 1, 165; Sargent; Troy 150. ; Butterfield, j 73pn CzlC3 .
