Show OUTLOOK: Even the coaching staff is optimistic about the upcoming season, if the Braves can get some work out of that big offensive either running or pass protecting then once again look for Bountiful to be in the State event. In the region, Petersen looks at Davis as the team to beat and needing to keep a close eye on Viewmont and Woods Cross. line BOUNTIFUL And Talertedo Again 0 By DAVE WIGHAM have looked impressive Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL Sports writers could save themselves a lot of time and effort if they would just keep a standard form on the Bountiful football team. That form would read something like this. THIS YEAR the Braves have good size on the line, a fine quarterback who can both run and pass, some excellent linebackers and more depth at the runningback spots than most college squads. Using this form the writer would only have to erase the name from the previous year and simply insert the names of the new players and hed have the preview of the Braves for the upcoming season. IN A nutshell second year head coach Kim Peterson notes, Were optimistic about this season. We have some good skill people at the quarterback and receiver spots. Our line has good size although we have some inexperienced kids going this year. Sounds like a repeat of last year, and the year before and so on. Bountiful has always been noted for their size up front, the college teams in the area have nothing over the Braves weight program. The strength and conditioning aspect of the Bountiful football program takes a back seat to no one. These kids arent born this big yet by the time their senior season rolls around the majority of them have turned into giants. Although their linemen are once again tipping the scales in favor of the Braves it's been their skill people that has the coaching staff talking. In our passing drills this summer those skill people added Peterson. PETERSON, who has been involved in the Braves football program for the past eight seasons, will once again handle the offensive fortunes of the team along with coaching the line. Steve Carlsen, who played college ball for B YU, joins the staff this year and will handle the defense along with coaching the quarterbacks, runningbacks and receivers. Jerry Staley returns for another season to assist Carlsen and also to coach the linebackers while Kelly Evans returns to handle the defensive line and to assist with the offensive line. QUARTERBACKS. No real question mark here as senior Rob Faddis has the job of directing the Braves offense. Rob is an excellent athlete who gives the double dimension of being able to run and throw the football. His coach is very high on the blond senior. He can be as good as any weve had at the school since Ive been here. Hes that good. If anything should happen to Rob then junior Larry Merritt would get the nod. RUNNINGBACKS. The Braves have a little different twist to their backs this season in that they dont have a back that they can give the ball to 40 times a game like they did when they had the luxury of having a Rob Eggett or a Bruce Talbot. On the other side of the coin the Braves simgly havent had the depth at this spot like they have this season. We have five guys who are just about equal in ability and theyll share the playing time. Some of them will also play defense for us and that will determine how much time they get carrying the ball noted Peterson. Spencer Zigich and Brian Carling are battling for the fullback spot while John Evensen, Chris West and John Nichols are the three fighting for the halfback slot. None of them are really what you would call a power back but all are quick and none of them are afraid of contact. RECEIVERS. A small smile comes to the coaches lips when he talks about his receiving corps. Following an impressive showing in the passing drills the Braves are really high on the likes of Matt Shelley, Steve Wilson, Ricky Freeman and Doug Anderson. They all have good speed but the thing that makes them exciting is the fact they have some great hands, I mean these guys can catch the football. Another possible move would be to see Rob Lundquist, a linebacker by trade, split out catching some footballs. TIGHT ENDS. Some coaches in the league feel the Braves have two of the best around in seniors Darren Murphy and Brett Steineke. These two are big and aggressive while still possessing the speed to get down field and the agility to catch the ball. With two thoroughbreds like this in their stable it's not unlikely to see a double tight end look out of the Braves this season. LINE. Now we come to the heart and soul of any Bountiful team, the big horses up front. The beef in the trenches w ho do the little things to keep the offense rolling. Thats about the only thing little about these guys as once again the Braves will put more beef on the line than most of their opponents. Seniors Rob Proctor (61220 lbs) will anchor the line from his center spot but Brent Packer (6 185 lbs) isnt going to conceed the job to him. Kevin Kilbum (62 230 lbs.) and Kendall Smith (6 185 lbs.) have the inside track at the guard spots although Dave Faragher (62 200), John Brown (62 210) and John East (6 165) will have something to say about who starts. Seniors Randy Upton (64 210) and Richard Broederlow (65215 ) will handle the tackle positions, there was also a possibility that Faragher could also be played at a tackle. Broederlow is a first year player who moved into the school last year from Australia. We have some inexperience at certain line positions admitted Peterson, not the kids that have moved up from the junior varsity level but the kids who havent played at all. We know we have a big line but they are untested as a unit. Its a concern right now but were hoping the line turns into a strength for us he beamed. Over the years the Braves have always fielded one of the stingiest defenses in the state. Time after time the Bountiful D has been at or near the top in fewest points allowed and the coaching staff is hoping they get off to a better start this season than last. Weve been working on a few things this year to help our defense be stronger in the early going. Last year the defense came around after a few games but we hope to come out strong this year noted the head man. DEFENSIVE ENDS. Darren Murphy and Alan Bennett look odds on favorites to start with Broederlow and Steineke ready in re serve. This will give the Braves good size and depth at this spot. DEFENSIVE TACKLES. Scott Pedersen is only 511" and 180 pounds ut the senior has impressed the coaches with his aggressive is style to win a starting berth. The other spot Brown with Faragher, for Kilbum, grabs up and Smith fighting for it. LINEBACKERS. Senior Rob Lundquist is the only returning starter on this years team so the role of leadership, which he has filled admirably thus far, falls on his shoulders. Rob is the least looking linebacker in the world but his presence is certainly felt on the field. Another senior, Rick Rose, is slated for work on the outside spot. Rick is built like a bowling ball and you can bet hell stick his nose in on any ball carrier. John Jordan and Brian Carling will also be hungry for playing time. Bruce Riddle, Spencer Zigich and John Nichols will hold down the spots on the inside backing chores. History tells us that the leading tackier on the Braves comes from this inside backer spot and any one of these three are capable of that fete. SECONDARY. Mike Jensen and Mike Egbert will hold down the corner spots, with Evensen and Shelley available if needed, while Chris West and Steve Wilson will handle the safety spot between them. This gives the Bountiful squad some good speed in the secondary along with some players who arent afraid to get dirty or hurt. (C We're optimistic about this season.
