Show APRIL 27, 1983 Em Never Thefll Stop Weaning The tradition and uniqueness that surrounds one of Americas oldest and most favorite sports is almost magical. ONE OF those traditions that is as old as the sport itself, is the coach or the manager who wears the uniform just like his players. A coach today might fill his uniform much differently than when he himself once played in it, but the fact he still puts it on game after game, is something that nearly no other sport offers for its fans. Hi .. . NT FROM THE high school ranks right through to the dugout of the New York Yankees, the man who leads the show always puts the uniform on and magically becomes a kid again. Its got to the point that some have said they wouldn't coach at all if they couldnt put on the uniform, despite their unmatched love for the sport. Kent Draayer, the man w'ho leads the show at Davis High, stated, I saw Rocky Bridges with the Salt Lake Gulls a couple of years ago and he sure fills it much differently than when he used to with the Pittsburg Pirates. Its unique and thats for sure. I GUESS Ive been putting on the monkey suit since I was a little kid and I still enjoy putting it on. If you want to break into a run with the kids or pop around on your toes, the uniform allows you to do it. It makes us kids Coaches wearing uniforms in baseball is a tradition as old as the sport itself. Brad Haw kins (left) says he wouldnt coach if he couldn't wear one, while Kent Draayer (top) claims hell never get tired of putting on the monkey suit and Ken Hicks (right) stated that wearing the uniforms brings out the kid in you. again. Im probably the first one to hit in batting practice when Im able to sneak in there. Of course I have to tell the kids to do it like 1 say, rather than how I do it anymore. I know I can still throw more strikes than anyone and thats why they call be C. B. or confidence builder. says he hasnt missed but two days dressing down for baseball and the experiences both as a player and a coach have been too many to remember. But one such experience occurred while he was playing with the University of Utah. I was the last one to get a uniform for practice that day. I was handed a size 46 pants which I knew belonged to Summerhayes. The high was just coming in with the pant which pro-cIn addition to that I meant it had no DRAAYER ut The uniform is a cherished thing with the Dart baseball program. Draayer remembers what Mike Gardner, the head basketball coach, has said. Gardner has said before that if you look good, youll usually play good, said Draayer. We take pride in how we look. Everyone dresses the same, even the socks look the same. stir-rup- s. was given a belt. candy-stripp- er I WENT OUT to batting practice and decided to turn up the bill of my hat because I looked like bozo anyway. While I was having my fun, someone from. the Utonian (the school s yearbook) , came and took a picture of e in the book, me. They ran it as a thinking all the time that was the way I really dressed. Needless to say my teammates killed me when it came out, said Draayer. full-pag- THE DAVIS coach has had plenty of time to be in a uniform, both as a player and a coach. He was captain of the Davis High team his senior year before playing two years for both Weber College and the University of Utah. He later came to Davis High to coach track but soon took over the baseball program and has been the head coach since. Another coach just up the road at Layton High who enjoys putting on the uni is Brad Hawkins. HAWKINS, WHO played at Bonneville High before playing some great baseball with the Weber State Wildcats and the BYU Cougars, says, I dont think Id coach if I couldnt put on the uniform. Its special for me to be out there with the kids, dressed just as they are. It puts the boy back into me. I throw batting practice everyday and run up and down with the kids every chance I get. The one reason I streak to third base to coach is that my kids will follow my example and hustle out to their positions. Thats the No. 1 reason and No. 2 is thats how Ive always done it. HAW'KINS HAS also played some pro baseball with several farm clubs including a stint in the Florida State League. The uniform is just part of the game, said Hawkins, The 60 and old guys in the leagues, still put em on. 70-ye- ar Once it goes on, youre a little kid again. A guy with a suit on the sidelines just cant do the things we can do. The kids look up to you with the uniform on. I know while I was in Florida playing, which is probably the funnest time I ever had in baseball, we looked up to our manager and it was better that he was dressed just as we were. THE LIST doesnt stop with local coaches in those uniforms. Kenny Hicks still dresses down and gets in one every week once spring starts. I think one of the reasons baseball has such longevity among its coaches is that they get to be part of the game with the uniform, it keeps you young doing it. MOST OF the baseball coaches who stick around for awhile have developed some skills and usually dont lose them. It gives us a Tremea Deceiving Be5 Count This Kid Out chance in the uniform to run around, throw the ball a little and keep young. Makes us hustle a little more with the uniform on. One of the most exciting times for me to have the uniform on was the game we had against Hillcrest High in 1975 when Curt Christensen was pitching. That game at Ken said Price Park will never be forgotten, Hicks. HICKS, who has played a lot of baseball himself, said it was also fun to put on a different uniform. He performed his high school ball at Weber High, went to Weber State for two years and later to BYU for a couple of years. His coaching has taken him from Valley Junior High to Kaysville Junior High, Sunset Junior High and the rest of the time has been at Clearfield. Hicks has worn a baseball uniform at Clearfield High since 1968 when he became the head coach. Davis Soccer Leads The League Race VIEWMONT - If Jimmy the Greek really thinks hes an expert at picking and predicting sporting events he should come out this way and try his hand at the Region Four soccer games. -- Just when you think CLEARFIELD youve got the Falcon baseball team nailed to the fencepost, its deceiving players like Scott -- - Tremea that fool ya. diamond occurred last season when he and DECEIVING? Well, at under slightly over 145 pounds, guys like that usually dont appear too tough to swallow. But Tremea usually ends, up fooling them all. six-fo- Now a senior on Coach Ken Hicks club, Tremea is playing a key role in attempting to help the Falcons land a playoff berth in the 1983 state playoffs. 4-- A After serving his time as a sophomore and junior in the Clear- field High baseball program, senior Scott Tremea is making the best of his final year in a Falcon uniform. Though Tremea may appear a little deceiv- ing because of his size, opponents have learned to respect his talents on the baseball diamond. me a chance to play and do something that would be a definite contribution to the team, said Tremea. One of Tremeas brightest moments on the WITH TWO solid years of experience behind him and what baseball sense he has picked up this year, Tremea should and could be one of the guys in the white hats that helps Clearfield into the post season picture. At the present time, the Clearfield senior is averaging just over .300 at the plate but as Hicks stated, He and the rest of the team need to be a little more consistent and then I think weU be right where we want to be. TREMEA, who during the football season stole the show with a few key receptions, is now stealing the stolen bases show among his Falcon teammates and is leading them all in that category . Tremea knows where in stands in athletics, mainly because of his size. Ive always enjoyed competing in sports but baseball always seemed to be my favorite because if anything, you really dont need to be big and tall. I liked football, in fact there is hardly anything that can compare to a Friday night game under the lights. ONE THING about participating in high school sports, is that you just like the chance to play. Baseball, more than football, has given k homer against Roy slashed an that helped win the game. inside-the-par- IT WAS A great feeling to accomplish something like that. We had been behind the entire game and with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning and with the count full, I hit a grand one. It was something like all kids dream about, Tremea commented. The homhomer which er happened to be a three-ru- n enabled Clearfield to win by a single run. That was one of the best times Ive ever had, said Tremea. The Clearfield team itself has been struggling in recent games and stood at 4 in league play entering action this week. We are a close knit team but as far as what weve been doing on the diamond, we just havent been getting the job done, he said. 3-- THE CLEARFIELD third baseman stated at third. This is the first season Tremea has played third base. Last season Hicks had him at both second and short. Scotts father is currently the recreation director for the city of Roy. With a dad involved in sports so much, I always had the chance to get plenty of playing time in. Dad has always been behind me in everything Ive done, said Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tremea reside in Clinton. MY NEXT DOOR neighbor though, has probably taught me the most about sports, said Scott. That neighbor happens to be Greg Decker who once played his same high school baseball at Clearfield High. its just started to get fun playing NO ONE has been able to figure out w ho is going to win and the reasons behind it. As it stands now Davis is on top of the region with 12 points, a team earns two points for a win and one for a tie, followed by Highland with 10 points, Woods Cross and Viewmont both have 9, Bountiful has 5 while East has 0. Keep in mind only three of these sides will be involved in the state tournament with the first place squad getting the automatic berth and the second and third place finishers heading into playoffs. WOODS CROSS went through a drought last week as the Wildcats were unable to score any goals. As a result they came out of the week with a 0 loss at Davis and then a 0 tie with Bountiful on Friday night. I thought we played a good game against Bountiful noted Wildcat coach Kevin Rigby, We had the pressure on them and just couldnt score. You have to give a lot of credit to the Bountiful defense for that. Against Davis we just plain looked bad, every once in a while our youth and inexperience comes to the surface as it did in that game. Coach Rigby went on to explain that the Cats only start two seniors now in Kirt Dyches and goalkeeper Scott Longson, Scott has been super for us. Hes really playing well now. He did fantastic against Bountiful. Hes a hard worker and has been a great surprise to us and a pleasant one. 2-- 0-- BOUNTIFUL also had a hard time finding the back of the net as they too were unable to score last week. |
