Show 8 Farm and Garden Guide, April, 1983 HELPFUL TIPS Grow vegetables in a small area Gardening techniques can help get maximum use of the growing area. You may increase production per square foot by trying some of these methods suggested by Utah State University Extension specialists. Modify the soil Most soils will benefit from 2 inches of organic matter incorporated to a 6 inch depth. It helps loosen clay soils and adds moisture retaining qualities to sandy soils. Use abundant inexpensive materials such as leaves, sawdust, wood shavings, old hay or straw. Avoid nitrogen deficiency. Add 1 inch of material for every 100 square feet. If enough composted material or rotted manure is available, cut the ammonium sulfate rate to half that amount. Maintain soil tilth and structure by adding some organic material each year. Providing adequate fertility will encourage maximum production. Precision plant Remember that crowding reduces yield and quality and too much distance wastes space. Thick seeding may be needed to obtain an adequate stand but sure to thin unneeded plants early! Put plants in bed A single file row wont get high yields. A 3 x 5 foot area separated by 16 to 18 inch walkways forms a bed. Closely spaced plants in a bed produce amazing harvest. Roots grow better in an uncompacted soil when traffic is confined to the path. Use flat beds with loose well drained soil. Heavy soils benefit from major amendment and raised beds. Realize that you dont need expensive retaining walls of blocks or radishes and lettuce may be interplanted between tomatoes, brussel sprouts or summer squash. Low growing plants such as parsley can survive among taller plants. You might plant pole beans with corn after it is 12 to 15 inches high. The corn will serve as a support. Grow compact plants Pick from seed catalogs some smaller varieties of crops such as cucumbers, cantaloupes, watermelons and winter squash. Plant them instead of the varieties that sprawl. Keep the soil busy When early crops are harvested, plant again. You can grow some of your own transplants to fill in or start lumber. with seeds. Plant them in a flower bed, border or other part of the yard designed for view. Plant them alone or in combination with flowers and leaf colored shrubs. Grow in containers Planter boxes, barrels, large pots and other containers can grow crops, especially the smaller kinds. You can get early production of salad vegetables as containers take advantage of warmer areas of the yard or patio with night protection. or- Choose adopted varieties To grow a successful garden, plant the kinds that grow well in the area. Each year USU select the varieties and tell where they may be obtained. horticulturists Control weeds totally Use beds or mulch to control weeds. Beds of closely spaced plants will quickly shade the soil and reduce weed germination. Organic mulch such as lawn clippings help or you can use black plastic with plants such as tomatoes, melons and peppers. They grow well in the warmed soil and weeds are smothered.
