Show APRIL 13, 1983 Davis Plays Balanced Soccer Icebreaker Was Optional, But Performances Werent KAYSVILLE One way or the other, Davis 83 edition of soccer, plans to stay head to head with the opposition. "Whether it's defensive or offensive , I think our overall balance will keep us in there, said Bruce Bitner who is now well into his sixth year as head coach of the program. KAYSVILLE AND SO FAR into the new season, Bitners experienced and talented squad have done the things theyve planned. As of action completed last Friday, the Darts were in and league play. The overtime victory over a solid Viewmont team last Friday gave Davis their first league win while the Darts and Woods Cross tied in their outing. ' WEVE GOT A lot of the same kids back, its just getting it together, said Bitner. Warmer weather, instead of the cold, will only come to Davis rescue. Well jell, said Bitner, In the five years Ive coached, this club is probably more balanced in skills than any other. Theyve also got an instinct where the other guy will be, which will stabilize us all through the year. THIS WEEK the Darts were to play Highland Tuesday, then host East in a make-u- p game on Thursday and also host Bountiful on Friday. The home games could be played at Davis new home field, just east of the baseball diamond, if final preparations are made. If not ready, the home games w ill continue to be held at Gailey Park in Kaysville. Goalie Scott Argyle has been with the Darts since a freshman and has been the goalie for three years, good enough credentials to have him elected a along with fullback Chad Morgan. SCOTTS THE the kind of kid that sticks his nose in it. With balls and people coming at ya, hes just the right person for the job, said Bitner. Morgan will man the center fullback position and will direct the other fullbacks. If Chad goes, the defensive usually goes. If he fails, then usually the defense fails too. Its just the nature of his position, said Bitner. in ;i rl Lf t $ 'V taesm, DARREN Jensen, John Saban, Dave Talor and Greg Harrington will be back and forth as the fullbacks. Jensen along with Saban and Harrington have been starting recent games. Other fullbacks that could fill in are Dave McFarland and Jeff Cox. RYAN SMITH, Roger Reynard and Dave Lattin man halfback positions. Bitner described his halfbacks saying, Smith is very fast on his feet, Reynards mental toughness has made him a solid soccer player and Lattin has good basic skills. Richy Read could also help. Brian Bacon and Allen Stenquist are the Vl ners. THE MEDLEY relay team, despite a stumble at one relay exchange, captured second place in the Icebreaker event. The medlay combination was made up of Kelly Rujin. Todd Anderson, Brian Bacon and Del Espinosa. Erik Thompson, Davis' fine discus thrower who is only a sophomore, did not attend the meet. It's just too bad that he didn't since Thompson's last few throw s in the discus hav e goneover I40feetandthewinning throw m the Icebreaker discus was 146 feet. Erik could have had some fun, said Shaw. Even though Coach Mike State Contenders Meet At Weber State This Week kf Steal Trent Cox and junior Rick Youngberg. All four have adapted their style of play to each other and should make the Darts a definite threat in the scoring column. NOT MANY can refute Davis past success in the sport of soccer. Last season the club went to state as a fourth place team but ended up taking third in the state title chase. The year before they captured the region title and were second in state. In 1980 Bitner led his Darts to a region championship and were second in the state championship finals. exceptional job. Foulger ran two brilliant legs on relays and was fifth in the 100 meters. Both he and Smith were members of the winning mile relay team. LAST WEEK at the Icebreaker Invitational at Mountain View High, no team scores were kept but there was no question that Clearfield, Hillcrest and Viewmont w;ere three of the top teams. Its going to be close, said Clearfield's John Flint, Id have to rate Hillcrest as the top team, with Viewmont second and us third. The Huskies had some kids emerge at the Icebreaker that I didn't know they had. EXPECT SOME interesting juggling by a teams to qualify certain relays and individuals for the state meet in May. Both Clearfield and Lay ton are w orking behind the scenes to make things happen. few' ALL THREE of the top powers, each had performers who didnt do well at the Icebreak Layton Enjoys No Frills Winning LAYTON - Excitement is the day you purchase your very own car or go into a jetliner for the very first time on a trip to Hawaii. -- , THOSE ARE thrills with no frills, just about like what is taking place in Layton High track and field Russ Jones, the head coach, will admit that The excitement that exists there hasnt been this great for quite a few now-a-day- s. springs. You could start with the efforts of multitalented Myron Cooper, w ho as a senior is just starting to explode, about the same kind of explosion that occurred when he came out of nowhere to capture the hearts of many as a junior. COOPER, ALONG with Jones, are mapping stragedy to bring a state championship his way in either the 400 or 800 meters. Cooper also becomes visibly valuable in Layton's relay teams. Last Friday and Saturday at the annual Icebreaker Track and Field Meet, held at Mountain View High School, Cooper continued his key 400 meter showdown with Clearfields Bubba BUBBA Conley broke the school record in the 400 meters with a 49.88, but settled for second behind Paysons Jeff Cook. Ricky Smith also had a sparkling day as the junior finished fourth in the 400 and third in the 200 meters. He now qualifies for state. DEAN FOULGER had his best meet of the year and as Coach Flint stated, If I had to give an outstanding performer award, Id split it between Foulger and Smith. The two did an er that should of, or didn't compete at all. For the Falcons, it was J.C. VonCollin in the discus, for Hillcrest it was Jace Brewer and for Viewmont it was Kurt Matthews. VonCollin hadn't been beaten in the discus all year but failed to mark in three tries last week. He'll be back, said Flint. BREWER IS the long distance ace for the Huskies but at the Icebreaker didn't run in all the events he usually does. The Viking's Matthews is their talented speedster w ho didn't attend the Icebreaker because of baseball games. Perhaps an early season look at who the top and team title contenders will be, comes into a clear view this weekend at the Weber State High School Track and Field Invitational. 4-- mainstays of the attack but they are backed by a couple of younger players in sophomore -- CLEARFIELD excelled last weekend in the shot put where Von Collin won that event with a throw over 53 feet. Junior Kim Thurgood also looked brilliant as he blasted a throw good enough for third place. The Falcons also have to be elated with the finish of the mile relay team w hich took first over Hillcrest and neighboring Layton. Not only did the mile improve its time, but so did the Falcons medlay and sprint relay teams. Both the sprint and medley finish fifth at the Icebreaker. 7 Davis looks to Brian Bacon to score and goalie Scott Arygle to ancor the defense. CLEARFIELD - Theres probably nothing THE MEDLAY which shaved 4 'A seconds more exciting for John Flint, the head track off their previous best, consisted of Robbie coach at Clearfield High, then having superb Sherwood, Dean Garrett, Jared Martin and performance from his kids at a major meet. Duane Rock. Weve felt like weve been down in the relays and were doing some things SUCH WAS the case last Friday and Saturto shake them up, said Flint. James Moore, the junior, captured third in day at Mountain View High School, where Flint's brigade tore into the competition and the pole vault as Clearfields senior, Lane had their best performance of the year. Fishburn, took sixth. ALL IN ALL, the Falcons qualified J.C. Von Collin and Kim Thurgood in the shot put, Bubba Conley in the open 400, Ricky Smith in the 200 and the mile relay team. The medlay relay squad and Dirk Barlow in the open 800 are just a few tenths of a second from qualifying for state. This week the Falcons will host their only home meet of 1983, as Roy comes to town, and then it's preparation for this weekends Weber State Invitational. - THE DART track and field club qualified Del Espinosa and the medley relay team in the future state meet because of outstanding performances at the Icebreaker. Del's effort had to be outstanding after suffering from the flu most of last weekend. Despite being sick, Espinosa captured sixth place in the mile run and w ill thus represent the Darts later in May among the state's top mile run - Clearfield Track Unravels nents, Flint All Aglow The Icebreaker Invitational was the years first state qualifying meet which attracted many of the states top individuals and teams. -- Shaw treated the Icebreaker as an optional meet, he still had some athletes who werent optional at all in their efforts. Conley. This time the two were clocked at 40.07 to end in a second place tie to Payson's Jeff Cook who ran an impressive 49.45. BUT COOPER wasn't done there. With what strength was left he came right back to place fourth in the 800 meters, just a shade behind Clearfields Dirk Barlow who took third. Hanor, Tom Kidd, Lyle Morris and Myron Cooper shaved 10 seconds off their previous best to capture third at the invitational. Layton ran the first heat and blew everyone out by at of a least 20 yards, coming just second from qualifying for the state meet. I think we might make some further changes, said Jones, "We could put Jerry Cooper in the mile relay this weekend at Weber and might have a chance of getting Hillcrest. took fourth last LAYTONS weekend, just a hair behind Viewmont s tandem. Finishing fifth in the 200 meters was Phil Johnson. MATT AL'STAD came just two inches away from qualifying for the finals in the shot put. His furtherest throw went over 47 feet. Dave Brimhall was close also. Hanor and Johnson were also competitive in the 100 meters but missed getting into the Top nine-tent- Coach Jones commented that at this weekend's Weber State Invitational, people might be seeing some stragedy that might create the state championship Cooper is looking for. THERE WASNT another kid in the Orem area happier than Layton's Jerry Cooper after he jumped 7 to take second place behind Cory Swenson of Weber in the high jump. Swensons 9 was the top jump at the Icebreaker. Cooper, who had only jumped 0 at the Davis County meet, surged to 7 which broke the old school record set by Lane Sackett a few seasons ago. 400-met- 6-- 6-- 6-- 6-- Six. TOM KIDD IM hurdles.
