Show Farm and Garden Guide, April, 1983 7 WATER GARDENS Jhm Unique and beautiful idea By LILA JOHNSON Copley News Service Water holds a special fascination for people, whether it is a cascading waterfall surrounded by ferns, a serene Oriental setting highlighted by bamboo, stones and small statues, or a rustic redwood bridge spanning a trickling stream. A unique and beautiful idea for an ambitious gardener is the water garden. There is a wide variety of water lilies and other aquatic plants that provide beautiful greenery and blossoms. Birds are attracted to a water garden to drink, bathe and socialize. Fish in your water garden will become family favorites as they show distinct personalities during their growth. With a little imagination, a little time and a little space, a water garden can provide a fascinating, creative and relaxing spot that youll enjoy for years. Large or small, you can build your own water garden. If you use a half barrel or tub, you have an almost instant garden. You can learn with your small garden and add pipework, plumbing, drains or sump boxes later, along with accessories for fountains, waterfalls, lights, etc. If you decide to build a pond, you can choose cement or use a flexible polyvinyl chloride liner, which provides an extremely durable base with enough flexibility to mold to the shape of the pond. The stretch factor prevents cracking which sometimes occurs in cement ponds due to earth movements or ice pressure. Ponds can be built either above or in the ground. Either way, they are a beautiful addition to your garden and can increase the value of your home when the time comes to sell. Before you begin digging, there are a few important things to consider: Select your site carefully and avoid an area where trees or shrubbery will shed into the COMPLETE PEST CONTROL Spraying, as possible. Outline the proposed pond with a rope on the ground, trying different shapes until you find the best one. Plan to have straight sides, rather than sloping. This offers less surface for algae to adhere, MOWER Water $309" System PVC Pipe Reg. 1 34400 in. 30' 2 in.
