Furthermore, it promotes fast growth for those gardeners with small evergreen plantings they would like to urge on to bigger things. full-blas- water-scrubbin- Airman PFC. FREDERICK E. REITSMA Special Person Many people from Missouri consider Army Pfc. Frederick E. Reitsma of Layton, Ut., a very "special" person. REITSMA,, 18, son of Deanna Addams, 56 Layton Circle. Layton, and Fred Reitsma, 7 Mobile Manor, Brookings. S D., knows that in the Army it is traditional not to volunteei for anything, but he jumped at the chance to help the more than 3,000 handicapped people who recently participated in the 14th annual Missouri State Special Olympic Games held at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., in May. Reitsma is assigned with the 12th Transportation Co. as a truck driver. "I volunteered because working with these people is fun," Reitsma said. "I know played a very small part in the overall Olympics, but I wanted them to know that I cared enough about them to be with every contestant he helped. Til admit when I first started working with the kids I felt a little out of place, like I wasn't sure what to say or do. It wasnt long before I settled in and got involved though, Reitsma said. I was really amazed how these kids opened up to me and how they werent afraid to show their emotions. Being here was probably one of the greatest experiences Ill ever know, because I think Ive learned something special about people, all people. Before plunging it in its pot up to the rim in filtered light, cut the plant back well, making cuts just above the leaf stems. If the plant is still crowded, cut out all but three or four of the main shoots. A word of caution: the sap of the poinsettia can irritate the skin so you might take the pre- caution of wearing rubber gloves and dab stem cuts with petroleum jelly if the sap runs. Some people use fireplace ash on the stem cuts that run. DURING ITS summer outdoors, keep the poinsettia fed and watered, and misted often. As it grows, it can be trained to just about any shape desired for next fall. It may be trained to one stem for a poinsettia tree or one downward-turnin- g shoot may be left to drape over the pot. Last spring a friend asked me to prune her poinsettia before she put it outdoors and we left one draping shoot so that this past winter the plant was most enjoyable as a beautiful g bush. evergreen IN FACT many indoor gardeners tend to be satisfied with their poinsettias as foliage houseplant s rather than going to all the extra care necessary to produce colored bracts.
