Show WEEKLY REFLEX- -0 AVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY 20, 1982 : Eric Hansen Performs In Middle East Eric Hansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hansen of Kaysville, performed before royalty and at the site of ancient wonders of the world during a recent visit to the Middle East with the Young Ambassadors a group from BYU. THE GROUP perfomed for Jordans King Hussein and his family, as well as at the base of Egypts great Giza pyramids and in the ancient Turkish city of Istanbul. Eric, an electric bass player in the troupes band, is a graduate of Davis High School. THE 35 member troupe is directed by Dee Winterton and made its first appearances ever in Turkey and Jordan. It was the second visit to Egypt for the BYU group. VOLUNTEER SERVICE RECOGNIZED Phone System Explained To Layton Kiwanis Eva Hancock of erville Centis a recent recipient of a state community service award presented at the Volunteer Awards Ceremony in Salt Lake City. Sponsored by the State Dept, of Social Services, the four Utah Voluntary Action Centers, and Carnation Corp., Governor and Mrs. Matheson presented Carnation Silver Bowls to individuals from around the state who were honored for their volunteer efforts. MS. HANCOCK received an engraved silver bowl for her efforts in mental health activities. For 1 years she has been an active member of the Davis County Mental Health Advisory Board and has provided extensive volunteer service in The Kiwanis Club of Layton meeting for their regular Saturday breakfast meeting on May 15 at the Capistrano Restaurant heard Erik Refsdal, manager of the Layton Bell Phone Store, speak about the telephone system. REFSDAL BEGAN his career with the telephone system as the first male teller in the Salt Lake Telephone office. He later became a service representative, handling 1 service calls, new hookup requests and the like. Later when the idea of decorator phones became poputhe Bell lar in the system began to make retail sales of telephone equipment. Up until then the telephone was an invisible piece of household equipment, largely ignored by the housecleaner and the interior designer alike. First Month Of Eligibility For Social Security Changed Legislation enacted in 1981 made a busic change in when a person can first become eligible to receive social security monthly benefits, Robert C. Van Side, social security district manager in Ogden, said recently. PEOPLE NOW becoming elegible for benefits can receive a benefit only for months they are eligible throughout the entire month. THis means that unless a person was born on the first or second day of a month, he or she cannot get benefits for the month they become 62. The first month they can receive a benefit is for the month after the month they reach 62. living persons social security record. The spouse or child must be eligible throughout the entire month to get a benefit. This mainly applies to stepchildren, since the marraige of the childs natural parents must have taken place one full year before the child can get be- This provision also applies to a wife or husband and children receiving benefits on a nefits. A person who chooses to receive benefits before reaching 65 should remember that, in general, benefits Thanks... Mr. Refsdal recommends leasing business telephone answering equipment as opposed to buying. Tax records are simpler if the equipment is leased and service is usually better. If leased equipment breaks down, it will be replaced by similar equipment while it is being repaired. A STRONG proponent of community organization, she feels that the apathy of too many citizens about social problems in their communities is of deep concern. There is a need for a commitment from people to provide needed services and to strengthen existing services to individuals and families so that major problems can be prevented. Influencing the legislative process and our elected officials to strengthen existing services to people is becoming increasingly urgent. In addition to her mental health activities, Ms. Hancock serves in a variety of local and state committees. She currently serves as a member of the HAVING AN extensive background in community service and health related areas, Ms. Hancock was chosen to serve on the Davis County Mental Health Steering Committee. Largely due to the efforts of the people on this committee, the present day state health coordinating established. CHANGING TASTES in telephones has led to the telephone stores such as Mr. Refsdal manages. The company now offers a wide variety of designer phones and related Davis County and the state of Utah. Early on she recognized the need for a mental health delivery system within Davis County.
