GENERATIONS OF GOOD Bv DONETA GATHERUM LAYTON new home in northeast Layton. 773-497- 6 - Cooking, crocheting, gardening, sewing and serving are part of a noble legacy LaVerna N. Thornley Smedley has passed on to her children, grandchildren and MRS. SMEDLEY, age 91, lives at 145 Dawson, Layton. She explains, I havent lived my entire life in Layton. When was first married, we lived one year in Syracuse. We spent nearly a year in Bountiful after that. Mrs. Smedleys husband, Henry, was a barber in Layton for 50 years. THIS BUSY woman has spent many years in volunteer service to PTA activities and the LDS Church. She is most interested in her children and their activities. An excellent seamstress, she shows the same desire for perfection in her homemade clothing articles as her mother and grandmother show in their crocheting. 1 HER LIFE is very busy. She has written her life story and she still remembers and recites several pages of poems that she learned when she was just a girl. She does most of the routine homemaking chores, cares for beautiful African violets, cooks and crochets professional-qualit- y baby booties. She remembers that she first learned to crochet with the cord string from her mothers packages when she was a little girl. She has made hundreds of crocheted and knitted gifts for friends and relatives. The first baby bonnets I made were of pure silk. You cant get it anymore so now I have to use rayon. she says. BESIDES baby items, Mrs. Smedley has produced hundreds of doilies, hot pads, and edges for pillows, handkerchiefs and towels. She has also made crocheted afghans, tablecloths. bedspreads and baby sets. She has also knitted many shawls and stoles for her daughters and granddaughters. One of her specialities is a pansie doilie. She has made 78 of these intricate pieces. Vera Smedley Evans has picked up many of the same traits that makes her mother so outstanding. It is hard to put a favorite" or best" label on one of Mrs. Evans recipies because she seems to have a natural ability to make ordinary dishes taste special. Her career as a school lunch manager at Whitesides Elementary School for 24 years is proof of this woman's cooking ability. MRS. EVANS daughter says, Dad used to say anything Mother did had to be good. Mother said Dad was easy to please. They were both right. Crocheting everything from doilies to Christmas decorations to afghans is a talent Mrs. Evans has. She follows the example set by her mother. Nearly everything Mrs. Evans makes is given away to friends and family members. i SINCE SHE retired from the School lunch program three years ago, Mrs. Evans has made 36 afghans. "Mrs. Smedleys granddaughter, Jane Evans Layton, is currently applying her gardening skills to help with the landscaping of the Laytons MRS. LAYTONS cooking specialities include apple pie, fruit desserts and cheesecake. Julie Layton, Mrs. Smedleys gradu- ated last year from BYU. She is completing her first year of teaching at Vae View Elementary School in Layton. Julie is talented in many a triangle? 5. Who discovered the North Pole? 6.
