Show i i WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MARCH 18. 1982 Davis Park Ladies Set Luncheon By KEITH DUNCAN staters (Beene and Tillman) and they were our strength. One frustrating quarter of basketball denied Clearfields Lady Falcons of another coveted state championship. We had to get the ball to them most of the time in order to be consistent. As we began league play HILLCREST dropped a bomb on the Clearfield girls during the first quarter of action last Saturday night and 19-- 54-4- 20-w- THE CLEARFIELD coach claims Region Two competition was keen in 1981-8but perhaps wasnt as competitive as it has been in recent years. Weber was pretty steady all year until they went to state. Layton was up and down, but had a good tournament, said the coach. Some called Region T wo the best region where Kearns, Hillcrest and Alta battle. But Jones didnt agree. They may have a little more consistency, but they were not a better region, she said. 2 THE RESPECTED Falcon coach, who has already put one state title in the bag, said she had her team trying every possible defense against the Huskies. After the initial quarter of action, Clearfield settled down and played the kind of basketball that took them to the finals, although it wasnt quite enough to measure up to the steady play of the Hillcrest gals. It wasnt difficult to detect the brokenheartedness spelled on the faces of the Clearfield girls as they made their way to the lockeroom. Jones summed it up the next day by saying, Sure the girls think the 9-- 1 went on to snare a 0 victory that gave the Huskies their third state title in seven years. It was the matter of just one bad quarter, said Margo Jones of Clearfield, the highly successful womens coach. We missed seven shots from four feet out in that quarter and you just dont do things like that against a good team like Hillcrest and expect to win. brokenhearted I their toe only once at Weber. The league mark deadlocked them with the Warriors at seasons end. Overall the Falcons were just one game shy of the season which was a goal of every girl on the team. Of course it hurt some of them that we didnt reach our goal, but I think in a couple of weeks they'll look back and see how great a season they had, said Jones. The Davis Park Ladies' Golf Association's spring luncheon points all year long but two of those helped Clearfield earn a berth in the semifinals. deceptive too, because she doesnt appear like that at all. Jodi wasn't always consistent, KELSEY, who was cut from her ninth grade team and later reinstated after Jones asked she be given a chance to play, stood 1 in junior high. There was just too much there to let go. I think Michelle could play some college ball later on. As her coach I think she has reached only half her potential, said Jones. Siding with Beene all year on the guardline was Lori Hutchison, who ended up with the second leading shooting percentage from the field. Jones. For the season, Beene led but she is human too, Region One in scoring with an 18.4 scoring average. She wasnt scared to drive hard for lay-uor hit from the outside. Jenny may have a solid chance of playing college basketball. 6-- Lori had a way IN SIX of the past seven basketball seasons, Clearfield teams have finished no lower than third place. In 1976 they of getting the job done. She was my extention on the court and as our point guard she used a lot of basketball sense in moving our offense," Jones continued. ELISE IPSON and Raylene Hayes also contributed to the success of the team. Hayes, only a sophomore, saw plenty of action in the seasons final against Hillcrest and spent much of her efforts guarding the best guard in the state. You can't say enough about players like Tillman and IT MAY have been players like Kelsey and Yamada that glued things together for Clear- field. Although they didnt score lots of points and star in the limelight like Tillman and Beene did, they kept the team together. Yamada scored only 22 are they wanted a state championship just as much as any group I've had. said Beene. First off, Jones felt that Jodi may be the best prep rebounder she has had and certainly the best in the prep ranks this past season. JODI IS a tremendously physical rebounder. She jumps well and is quick. She is Jones. For the game, Clearfield shot only 21 percent but as Margo says, They never quit We got down early trying. and it hurt us. But because of the backbone of a few girls they didn't allow it to turn into a rout, said Jones. Being the member of a championship team in any THE HUSKIES didnt shoot much better for the game, but their 41 percent was certainly enough to give them the win. Before losing to Hillcrest in the finals, the Clearfield gals sport has a certain ultimatum about it. Those who crave sports competition always dream of that championship day. clipped Davis, Kearns and,. Alta for victories. " MICHELLE KELSEY, the Lady Falcons tallest player, came through admirably against Davis in the first game. She needed to because no one else would. Clearfields superior height in the latter half of that game boosted the Falcons into the second round. Jones claims her team had no right to win against Kearns. The Falcons found themselves down by ten points in the fourth quarter and if it hadnt been for two combined presses, they may have lost. THE GAME went into overtime against Kearns and in the final seconds a hero stood out. No it wasnt Jennifer Beene or Jodi Tilman, who eventually made the team, but it was Betty Yamada who was fouled with no time remaining in overtime and after sinking both free throws boosted Clearfield into the third round. Against Alta in the third round, Clearfield did their homework and competely desIt was a troyed the Hawks. game where the kids did exactly what we asked them to. almost a perfect game," said Jones. Beene, who hadn't played well in the two previous games, exploded for 25 points against Alta. CLEARFIELDS veteran women's coach admitted this past season could have been a disaster if her kids hadnt come ' together and become unified. We didn't have a lot of brilliant talent and we had the potential to have some real problems in playing team ball if the girls didnt realize we had one coach instead of 12. BUT THERE are teams in our area whose hopes '"for a team tltle'are as (distant ajsjjsuff hrji the Arctic Circle. To repfhce the dreamsof a team championship they must find other pinacles that in themselves must be as choice to them as if they were team champions. Im talking about the swimming teams at Clear field, Layton and Davis. Because of the lack of swimmers, these kids and their coaches know it is virtually impossible to hope for a team title. Except in a year where exceptional talent come together. These schools have little chance to compete with the likes of Bonneville and Roy in Region One, and Viewmont, Woods Cross and Bountiful in Region Four. TO REPLACE the hopes for a team title isn't easy. Just ask Fred Lange who has coached swimming in Clearfield for a number of years. Although he never goes a season without attempting to win a title, the fact remains he and his swimmers are competing against more than just another team. Who knows? Someday swimming competition might thrive here. It may very well happen if Lange stays as committed to the sport as he has in the past. EVEN THOUGH there arent a bunch of trophies lined up in a glass trophy case like there is for football or basketball, 1 respect Lange for everything he has done for kids who chose the sport of swimming. In talking to Kris Boren and Julie Jurek the other day they likened Lange to a "teddy bear. These two have been successful in the girl's swimming world and they say they owe most of their success to Lange. m 292-322- DAVIS COUNTY The Clearfield Recreation Department is now formulating its adult softball program for 1982. teams will be allowed to participate in each league, with Clearfield teams having first priority. My hair smells like chlorine, my eyes hurt and the days become longer after getting up so early to practice. But aside from all that, Coach Lange' has a way of making practice meaningful. Of course, it all is worthwhile once they win. When Kris beat Michelle Jones from Roy for the 100 back title, the joy of winning was as ever meaningful as when her twin brother Greg helped the boys basketball team beat Woods Cross in the first round of the basketball tournament. It was a thrill, she said. The finish was so close, that only the video tape could decide the victor. IM SURE it was hard for. some of the girls to watch othc teams and see their guards tossing up shots from every point on the floor. We had two all f Kaysville and Davis County course. Clearfield and Hillcrest. The Huskies blew the game open early and made it tough for the Falcons to get back into the contest. When they finally accepted the fact there was only one way of doing things, will play in Alise Ipson, 32, makes an abrupt stop in action taken from last Saturday nights state championship game between the 100 free, Kris is just one second off the school record.
