Show I WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS NEWS JOURNAL NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MARCH 11, 1982 Copernicus, Astronomer March 4 is generally accepted as the birthday anniversary of Nicholas Copernicus, the Polish astronomer and father of modem astronomy. Bom in 1473, his historic discovery was published in 1543 seventy years later. THE REVOLUTIONARY principle in that discovery was that the sun, not the earth, is the center of our solar system. Copernicus concluded it was the center of the entire space system. That, of course, was not correct. But he was the first to see that the earth revolved around the sun, not the reverse. This discovery had enormous implications for the future of astronomy, transportation and scientific research. 1ST PLACE LAYTON LITTLE LEAGUE First place winners in Layton Little League basketball, coached by Rudy Nickerson and Bob Speer are, front, Layne Erklens, left, Shawn Goodspeed, Brandon Parks, Hugh Parks, and Shem Malone. Home Service Calls The Better Business Bureau often receives calls from consumers who become angry when they must pay a fee for a home repair or service call in addition to the costs of parts and iabor. Remember, that besides meeting costs of running any business, a service company must pay a technician to make calls and also maintain special repair equipment and vehicles. MICH OF the expense of maintaining a repair service comes from the cost of the repair truck or van used to make the call. These vehicles not only must be purchased or leased, but also must be serviced and insured. The cost of fuel is another major expense, as is the duplication of parts and equipment that technicians must bring with them on their service calls. Each repair vehicle must carry a supply of tools, replacement parts and testing ewuipment. The repair technicians who make service calls are specially trained and usually have years of experience in their particular field. Their time is valuable and the company must pay for their traveling time as well as the time spent repairing the appliance. ACCORDING to the Asso ciation of Home Appliance Manufacturers, 40 percent of all appliance service calls could be eliminated by: checking power plugs, checking and safety reset switches, checking fuses, and checking the correct setting of controls as outlined in the instruction manual. To avoid frustration, the on-o- ff BBB suggests that appliance owners inquire about service call charges before they ask for a repair technician to be sent to their home. Be sure to ask what services are included in the basic service call charge. And, call the Better Business Bureau for reports on the past performance of the company you are dealing with. HOTS AND Tots A pregnant woman should avoid a hot tub. Researchers at the University of Washington point to the risk of birth defects from excess heat. The hyperthermia danger seems to be especially greatest between the third and eighth week of pregnancy; hence, the warning to women who think they might be pregnant. Balancing Resistance and Endurance Lean muscles use energy even at rest, but body fat uses very little energy. Muscle tone decreases after several years without exercise. If body weight remains the same, fat may have replaced muscle mass and a persons energy requirement at rest may be reduced significantly. If a person continues to consume the same amount of food without exercise, the excess calories will be converted to fat. A solution is an exercise program that involves working muscles and against resistance. Walking up stairs, sit-uother exercises put demand on muscles, build muscle tone and help use up the excess calories. THE COLD War Combatting colds successfully can be helped by raising room humidity according to Canadian researchers. Studies of schools over a ten year period revealed that dry indoor air may be a factor in increased colds during times when outdoor temperatures drop. An effective test to determine if a house is humid enough is when windows are just a little misty. A back rub can be an effective Rubbing Back pain reliever. Some researchers believe that a simple back rub stimulates an area in the brain that produces endorphins, the natural substances the body produces to block pain. Heavy massage of muscles is not necessary.
