The good wins over evil. Murder, violance, drugs, etc. are not portrayed in the comics. Companies like Marvel and D.C. subscribe to the CCA (Comics Code Authority). ROBERT IS a comic book collector. He now has 4,378 comic books valued at over $1500. His two most valuable comics are Adventure Comic and Showcase. They are priced at $320 and $240. Robert is the son of 1st Lt. and Mrs. Robert Kincaid, II. He was bom March 13, 1967 in Germany. Because of Lt. assignments as a maintenance officer in the Air Force, the family has moved ments. COMICS have remained very much the same over the years. The characters are drawn by different cartoonists but their recognizable characteristics dont change. The cover might be done 'by one famous cartoonist and the interior drawings might be done by a different artist. Robert can recognize the most successful artists by their covers. One exception to this statement is Wonder Woman. Her Kin-cai- OFFICE SUPPLIES, ANYONE? By DONETA GATHERUM If the scientific theory of evolution could be used as a formula to help businesses succeed, The Ink Spot in Layton might be offered as a proof for the theory of adaptation and change. This local office supply, card and gift store has continued to evolve since 1960. WHEN THE Ink Spot first opened at 27 S. Main, Layton, the company did custom printing and sold office supplies. Clair Hales, the owner, had jtteVipusly managed "The office in Wfeekly Keflex Kaysville. His wife, Twila, bein the new came a business. Thirteen years ago, the firm had outgrown its Main Street location. The Hales moved into the Fort Lane Shopping Center. At first they occupied a spot near the west end of the center. Again the Hales were forced to move because the room was inadequate for the amount of business the store was doing. er THE INK Spot leased a larger space in the shopping center. As the company evolved, the printing part of the business was dropped because of the expanding office supply inventory and a new section of Hallmark cards and gifts. THE HALES1 son, Robert, grew up with the business. He frequently during Robert's If you need typewriter ribbons, erasers, paper or anything for an office or a lot of other pursuits, Robert Hales, owner of the Ink Spot, probably can give lots of assistance. worked for his parents and learned the particulars about sales, inventory and management. Robert liked the business field so well that he attended Weber State College, majored in business and received a B.S. degree in business administration and finance. For the past six years, Robert has been the manager of The Ink Spot in Layton with a good deal of assistance from Louise Sill, his assistant manager. AS IS the case with many successful businesses, The Ink Spot expanded into other locations. At one time, the Hales owned six Hallmark card and gift shops in addition to The Ink Spot. Three of the stores have been subsequently sold. THE HALES still have three Hallmark card and gift shops, two in the ZCMI Center and the one in the Crossroads Mall in Salt Lake City. Clair, Twila and Robert Hales work together to manage the expanded family ness. busi- THE INK Spot is the only one of their stores that handles a complete line of office supplies. Robert explains this part of r the business is a service. Most orders are taken over the telephone and delivered out the back door of the store to various offices in back-doo- lifetime. They have lived in Germany, Luxemburg, England, Belgium and many of the states of the United States. Davis and Weber Counties. OVER 50 percent of The Ink Spots sales are made in this manner. Robert says the office supply business is extremely competitive. In order to stay ahead of other simular businesses, the store maintains a $100,000 inventory and has two delivery vans distributing orders daily. THE BIGGEST problem in the business is keeping track of this inventory which includes over 10,000 items. Evolution is a fact and not a theory in the office supply business. Ever expanding pro- -, ducts and the challenge to keep up with change, new equipment and new office methods can make the difference be- tween success and failure. Robert Hales says the most comprehensive and drastic change in office management is the invention of computers and the opening up of data processing to smaller companies. equipment and the The Davis County Commission has approved funding for three new county vehicles. SEVERAL AREA automobile and truck dealers recently submitted bids to the county commission for two pickup trucks and a diesel. Bel- gium six years ago, Robert had only a mild interest in comic books. The move to Belgium changed this. There was no T.V. There was a neat store that sold comic books. Once he got started, Robert became a comic book addict. He reads each volume twice, studies the art work and tries to copy the good points his favorite comic book artists portray. Robert can give you a detailed description of the history of comic books, the development of a comic book hero, the number of volumes printed of a certain series, the value of any given book. AGE IS not the reason a comic book is valuable. Low distribution is the main reason a certain book becomes a item. Comics that introduce a popular character d Woman, etc. will also bring ar cards and gifts.
