Hermansen Darlington Way, Layton, and Mrs. Bertha Hermansen of West Valley City, has been called to the Canada-Calgar- y Alberta Mission. On 90th Birthday HE WAS honored with a farewell on Sunday morning at the Layton 28th Ward. Elder Hermansen entered the Mission Training Center in Provo on Wednesday, March The ceremony was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Nov. 27, 1910. The couple made their home in Roy. Mr. Duncan died Nov. 2, 1946. 3. SHE MARRIED Christopher H. Brown on Nov. 17, 195 and moved to Farmington where she made her home until 1980. Mr. Brown died Sept. 18, HE HAS been active in the Boy Scouting program, and has attained his Eagle Scout award. He has held several 1 offices in his priesthood 1957. While residing in Roy, Mrs. Brown was employed at the Varney Canning Company for many years, and also at the old Weber County Infirmary in Roy, the Weber County school lunch program and also at the Naval Supply Depot during World War II. AN ACTIVE member of the LDS Church, Mrs. Brown has been a Relief Society teacher for over 50 years, served in the Primary presidency and also a teacher in the MIA. A lover of numerous hobbies, she enjoys quilting, crocheting and sewing of all types. Mrs. Brown is the mother of four children, two sons and two daughters, Orville Duncan, of Peterson, Utah, and Albert R. Duncan, Ogden; Mrs. Helen D. Peterson, of Roy, and Mrs. Clarence (Bernice) Mitchell of Clinton. SHE ALSO boasts 12 59 greatgrandchildren and one LYDIA BROWN Mrs. Lydia Robinson Duncan Brown will be honored at an open house reception, on Saturday afternoon, March 6, between the hours of 5 p.m. and will be held at the home of a and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mitchell at 1872 N.2000W., Clinton. The occasion is to celebrate her 90th birthday anniversary. 2-- MRS. BROWN was born March 7, 1892 in Ogden, the daughter of William Foster and Esther Diane Baker Robinson. She was reared in the Roy area and attended schools in Weber County. On March 16, 1910 she was married to William K. NELSON has always been an excellent homemaker. She loves to piece quilt tops and to quilt. She also crochets, embroiders and likes to cook. Most of all, Mrs. Nelson enjoys being a good neighbor. She has a real love for older people and delights in doing for them. This phrase might mean talking to old friends on the phone, visiting their homes or delivering a special home-bake- d plate of Mabel's sugar cookies. MRS. NELSON leaned to cook from her mother who always said, A good cook is one that tastes her own food. Mrs. Nelson learned to create her own recipes by "tasting. Its surprising what you can come up with if you combine several recipes into one, Mrs. Nelson said. A good example of this is the following cookie recipe Mrs. Nelson originated from two recipes that werent that special. MABELS SUGAR COOKIE 2 cups sugar 1 WHEAT CASSEROLE cup sweet milk 2 eggs cup lard (butter or margarine can be used but will change the texture of the cookies) 4 tsp. cream of tartar 2 tsp. soda 'A tsp. salt Vi Tbsp. vanilla 8 cups flour 1 TO MAKE a raisin-fille- d cookie, boil some raisins in water and thicken the mixture with cornstarch. Cut out two cookies and put the raisin mixture between the two cookies and pinch the edges together. Bake as you would a regular sugar cookie. OATMEAL COOKIES cup sugar 34 scant cup of lard cream together and add 1 1 BROWN THE above ingredients and season a little. Add two packages of dry spaghetti mix or two cups spaghetti sauce without meat. 1 cup tomatoes or 1 quart home canned tomatoes 1 4 oz. can mushrooms with liquid 2 stalks celery, chopped 1 tsp. salt 3 cups cooked wheat, whole kernel. Last week Mrs. Nelson and her neighbor, Mrs. Mable Layton, were in charge of the menu for the weekly luncheon. The main course for the meal was this delicious wheat casserole. celery is cooked in a 350 degree oven then top with grated cheese. Take a two quart casserole dish, serves ten. To prepare the wheat soak one cup wheat in two cups water overnight. The next morn-- , ing boil the wheat 5 minutes and then simmer until tenter. 6 cups boiled cut up chicken or turkey 4 cups chopped celery 1 cup slivered almonds 4 Tbsp. grated onions tsp. Accent 2 cups mayonnaise 4 Tsp. lemon juice 1 MIX AND place in a 9x13 inch pan. Cover with grated cheese and crushed potato 30-4- 0 CREAM LARD, sugar and grees for 15 minutes. Dip the top of each cookie in sugar before baking. Hints: If you chill the dough before cutting the cookies out the dough can be a little more sticky. You wont have to add Deppe. Program for the evening was under the direction of the scholarship committee. Maijorie speaker, State Senator Haven J. Barlow, who reported on the bills passed by the Utah State Legislature at its recent budget session. There was some discussion on the bills concerning education. The Senator stated he did not anticipate a special session to discuss bills vetoed by the governor unless the one concerning appointment of judges should necessitate it. DR. MARY STROMNESS reported the years program of the Utah State Womens Legislative Council. She also described how that organization operates. There are 350 members representing 120 groups in the state. Epsilon Chaper sends two representatives, Marjorie Thatcher and Leona Clawson. Dr. Stromness represents the state organization, np wo-me- was born Feb. 21 and weighed 8 lbs. 10 ozs. She will be named Janna Beth. Bow is employed in Springdale, Ark. Mr. Beagley is a former Layton resident. 1 mix in the other ingredients. THE FOLLOWING slate of new officers was presented for president, Dr. Mary Strom Federal Retirees To Meet The Bountiful Chapter of the National Association of Federal Retirees has issued an invitiation to all federal retirees, their spouses, and federal employees who are nearing retirement to attend a meeting at the Bountiful Gol den Years Center March 8 at 12:30 p.m. commendations and how they will affect federal pensions. DISCUSSION of retirement Chapter President Allen Flanders urges all interested persons to attend and express problems will be continued from the February meeting. Their farewell testimonial service will be held Sunday, March 14 at 9 a.m. in the Kays-vill- e 16th LDS Ward at 50 West 350 So. THEY HAVE both held many positions in the church. Elder Cottrell has served in retired as manager of the LDS Church Mill in Kaysville. HE SERVED in the same mission earlier in his life and is happy to be returning to some of the same area. They are parents of six chil- dren Kenneth T. Cottrell, Lewisville, Tex.; Steven T. Cottrell, Bountiful; Gordon T. Cottrell, Henderson, Nev.; Mrs. Steven W. (Sharene) Thomas, Centerville; Lanny T.
