Show I 1 WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER. FEBRUARY 4, 1982 ' A s " Mark Wilsons Last Second Shot Clips Sky View 70-6- 8 By KEITH DUNCAN CLEARFIELD Once inside the team room, with the door shut securely, Coach Craig Hansen let go a long sigh of relief. It seems like its been eight years since weve been in here after a victory. Its much nicer to come in here after a victory than a loss, said the four year head basketball coach. THE LONG sigh of relief came after his teams dramatic 8 victory over the Sky View Bobcats which the coach preferred to call one of the most important victories we will have. Why so important? The way Hansen describes it is precise. Had the Falcons dropped this game to their fiesty visitors from the north, the 1981-8- 2 basketball season could have taken a nose drive and who knows when it could have finally crashed. Had Clearfield lost to Sky View they would have been in league play and had to play the powerful Roy Royals the following week. 70-6- -3 BUT AS IT is, Clearfield will have a little more confidence heading into the clash with the Royals this Friday in Roy. It appears they will need it, because reports that are coming out of Roy indicate there is a certain feeling of revenge, unmistakable in fact. Last season the Falcons dealt two severe blows to Roy, a team that eventually played East for the state championship. And the success continued right into the summer months as the nucleus of Clearfield kids that would eventually make the team, enjoyed a few moments of success in summer practice play. ROY, NOW in league play, has made mincemeat of the teams theyve claimed victories over. They havent got anything different planned wher 3-- 1 Clearfield comes to town on Friday. Mark Wilson, A CHS junior guard, was one of the individual heros last Friday as he came off the bench and ignited the Falcons at times they appeared ready to falter. Wils , under six foot, but gitteu with a sharp looking outside shot and plenty of speed to find open space shots was a terror. HE CONTINUALLY canned the long shots from the outside and at one point was tied with teammate Mike Rhodes for scoring honors with 14. That set the stage for the last minute of the game. Sky View had surged back from being down by nine points to tie the game at Clearfield had of the ball and chose until there stall to possession was but seven seconds left. 68-6- WHEN PLAY finally resumed, the ball went into Brett Peterson who couldnt find the shot he needed nor the avenue to drive for it. He passed to Wilson with only two seconds left. Wilson calmly put the ball down for a couple of dribbles and then let go a long 25 footer that splashed through the nets with no time left. AFTER THE game, Nelson came over to the Clearfield locker room and congratulated Hansen, Ray Meibos and John Flint. We played out of our heads tonight, it was our best effort of the season, said Nelson. Hansen made his reply to that by saying, It was our best game of the year too. The victory moved Clearfield's overall record to 6 and 2 in league play. 8-- 2-- Coach Craig Hansen made the comment that it was a lot nicer coming into an than a losing one when his Falcons cipped Sky View last week. Its my feeling that that kind of joyous feeling will prevail with the Falcons. prediction that the Lakers are going to glide through this league undefeated, they are just that good. With John White playing the best ball of his career, I cant see the East Leopards getting by the Vikings. Im going with the Vikings in this one. THOUGH IT isnt going to be easy, and no one said it was, Clearfield is going to lay a defe on p come Friday night. To the average odd ,ia. probably be thought a fool, but I think the Falcons have what it takes to get by the Royals. Roy is a solid team with returning lettermen like Rob Thomas and Steve Sholtec but with Jeff Schofield and Kyle -- Moosmann playing the games of their lives, its 7Tearfield m this one. The addition of Mark Wilson to the Falcon lir.e-u- p makes Clearfield even more of my choice. Without him, Clearfield may have got beaten by a Sky View team that was playing out of their heads last week. THOUGH WOODS Cross was able to deal a defeat on Davis during the first round of play, it probably .,ld LAYTON HASNT been used to losing this year but come Friday they will find out just how good the Bonneville Lakers are. Even with Keith Williams having a great game. Layton will need a whole lot more to bring down the powerful Lakers. Its my wont happen again. The Darts are just plain hard to beat at home. Davis will continue their climb toward a playoff spot with a victory over the Wildcats. Bountiful blitzed the Highland Rams the last time they played, but it wont happen again, at least by a blitz. The Braves are probably the better team in Region Four and I see them getting past the Highland squad again. WEBER PLAYED the best game of their year last week against the tough Bonneville Lakers and I think theyll continue their improvement with a victory over the Sky View Bobcats. On Tuesday of next week, I like Clearfield over Weber, Layton to gain revenge and beat the Sky View Bobcats and Bonneville to make it two in a row over the Royals of Roy. Harlem Thrillers Coming To Davis High On Tues. On Tuesday Feb. 9, the Harlem KAYSVILLE Thrillers will come to Davis High for the third time in recent years. Besides that, the Lancers were losing some mightly fine wrestlers to graduation. But Hansen said in the beginning that his team would gradually get better because he had some kids that were believers. That is precisely what happened. Layton started slow and didn't win many team matches. But time was the cure as the Layton team got better and better. WHEN IT came time to wrestle Clearfield in a dual meet, it appeared on paper that the Falcons were the team to beat. But the fiesty Lancer crew were not to be denied as they won the battle between the two arch-rivschools pretty easily. Then last week they clobbered Weber for another victory and a win that tied them for the Region One dual championship. Hansen has never conceded that Clearfield and Sky View will win the region title because he probably feels deep dow n inside that his team has a fair chance of getting it themselves. Of course after last Friday's seeding meet his wrestlers will have to fight like cray Feature ...Region Wrestling Results to stay alive because nothing has been handed to them. Layton's 12 entrees in the 1982 event have all been seeded. munities to help build the popularity of wrestling in the Clearfield area. It appears the Falcons will not only be strong now, but in future years also. THE 1981-8gathering of Falcon grapplers is a dandy one that could very well tackle the region championship and take it home. Tennis has had a certain relationship with these kids and theyd do just about anything for him, including winning a region title. At the seeding meeting their names had to be thrown into a hat and a draw was made lot their seeds. Paiker was fortunate to get the first seed, while Gallegos got third Mike Cabrey will make the 138 lbs. bracket a tough one for opposing wrestlers to win. He lost out on a state title last y ear and you can bet that he will be wanting to get a chance at it again. To get to state though, he'll have to beat Burke Stone of Weber, who looks to give Mike his toughest challenge Clearfield's Frank Archuletta is the Falcon's entree at 138 lbs. He has gotten better in recent weeks and Tennis knows he will need some points trom Frank in order to win the legion crown. in AT CLEARFIELD, the Falcons needed a dedicated individual like Coach Tennis to come along and whip the program back into shape. Ron McBride and Bob Steele had done a respectable job in giving Clearfield wrestling some recognition, but it has been Tennis that has brought a program to one of the finest in the state. Hansen felt that Rientjes should and could have got the number one seed but said. "That's just the way things go." Clearfield's sophomore, but a fine wrestler, is Shad Ragan at the 105 lbs. slot. Shad hasn't won much in region competition, but Tennis says his star 104 pounder hasn't really found his groove yet either. Layton's Robbie Zamora should take the 112 lbs. title. He is the number one seed and almost everyone's pick to take the title in region and again in state. He is th defending state champion. Clearfield's entree wil' be Rick Herdt who takes the place of Wes Mullins who had to bow out of the season due to serious medical problems. Tennis says Herdt isn't a bad w'restler and should compete favorably in the wrestling meet. CLEARFIELDS Rene Espolon may be an understat-men- t in the 119 lbs. class. He hardly wrestled the entire year but has come back in the last three weeks to post a 1 record and get a seed in the region meet. Mike Petroff of Layton obtained the number three seed and he'll go against Lewis of Weber in the first round on Thursday.
