DOUG SENDOBRY WOODS CROSS TAD LINDSAY VIEWMONT Well here they are, the top football players in Davis County as selected by the sports staff of the newspapers and the coaches. As in most selections it was very difficult to pick the best. If there was a tie for first team selections both players were awarded top honors. TO BE honest there isn't a junior college coach in the state that wouldnt love to have all these guys show up for their teams next year. Also chosen, in this years team, was a most valuable player for both offense and defense. These two considplayers stood out from the rest and when you is a big in itself this team that on talent of er the type all-st- ar D.B. ALAN GENTRY LAYTON DA. DARREN HAMBULN CLEARFIELD accomplishment. BIG ROB Eggett of Bountiful w as selected as the best offensive player in the county. On the year Rob rushed for 886 yards while getting into the end zone ten times. Two other runners in the county enjoyed big years as junior Steve Caputo of the Vikings collected 844 yards on the ground. Spence DeGraw of Davis wasnt far behind. Any coach would give his right arm to have these three in their backfield and w hen you add Bountiful's quarterback Phillip Schmutz (809 yards passing and seven touchdowns) you realize you have a very potent attack going for you. KICKRETURN KICKRETURN TODD SMITH MIKE BLAIR BOUNTIFUL CLEARFIELD OVER ON defense senior Troy Meacham of Davis was chosen as the best player. From his linebacker spot Troy was the leading tackier for the Darts and was always around the football. He also received a lot of attention as a fullback. Defensively this club would give opponents fits. The linebacking corps of Meacham. Steve Hadley. Mike Bunting and Doug Sendobry is as good a group as you'll find in high school ball. IN THE secondary are three players that some might feel too small for college ball but they all did well for the high school clubs. Tad Lindsay of View mont picked off five passes this season plus four fumble recoveries to lead the pack. Several players on the second team narrowly missed being a first team selection. In some cases the voting was extremely close. Those on offense that received a lot of votes were Todd Smith of Bountiful. Brad Hansen. Bountiful, and Jeff Porter, Viewmont. DEFENSIVELY, Alan Kendrick, Clearfield; Matt Harmer, Woods Cross, and Gregg Boothe of Viewmont all barely missed first team honors. All the players in the Davis County area should be proud of their efforts this past season but these are the players that stand out and have been honored with their honors. ty |
