Show WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, OCTOBER 29, 1981 REHEX-DA- ViS Secondary School Menus The follow ing are menus for the secondary schools in the Davis County School District for the week of Nov. 2 to Nov. 6. High schools and junior high Michelle Hatch Fruit Heights, has been selected as a member of the Ricks College Vikadettes, a drill team which performs throughout the school year at various athletic events. THE DRILL team members conduct their ow n workshops and competiton in the spring for high school drill teams. 01 JAPANESE STUDENTS These tour Japanese students are living with Farmington families while thev attend classes at Davis High School. T hev will return for the Christmas vacation after attending school in other states. They are, to r, Keiko Hoshi-jimSaori L'sui, F.mi Osaki and Osantu L'rano. with the family of Dave and Camille Butler. The students were placed through the U.S.A. Information Center, Inc. with offices in Los Angeles, Calif., Tokyo. Japan. They have been placing students for six years, mostly in California. They now send students to Arizona and Utah. Four Japanese students are fixing with Farmington families and attending Davis High School lot the sear. EMI OSAKI, a tenth grader, lives with the John and Miriam Massey family. Keiko Hoshijima is in the 1th grade and lives with the Mario and Sherry Wilcox family. Saori Usui, a senior, lives w ith the Anne Nelson family. Osa-mUrano. a 12th grader, is 1 THE STUDENTS family pays their transportation to the states after the Information u 1 Center has made the arrangements. There were students here during the summer to learn the customs and English, though, they have learned the basic English at their Japanese schools. Jim Stettler. an English teacher living in Fruit Heights, has taught the group during the summer. STUDENTS WHO attend school in other states will return to Utah to spend the a. Christmas holidays with their host families with whom they have developed close ties. There are three alternatives for paying the expense of the Japanese students. First, the student's family pays all expenses; second, the Japanese parents pay part of the expenses and the student works for the family here for part of the expense; third, the students work for his entire expenses while living here. -- cinnamon rolls, milk. The follow ing are the menus for the elementary schools for the week of Nov. 2 through Nov. 6. Kindergarten snack varies each day. Those chosen were Kalli Bangerter, try-ou- Margaret Cabading, Linda rez, Heidi Jordan, Kelly Leavit, Vicky Magee, Annie Prokopis, Rebecca Ringler, Jennifer Struhs, Dani Williams, Janice Woodruff and Lisa Yates. ALSO LAST Monday, was the National Jr. Honor Society Induction ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder are the advisors of the NJHS and are doing a great job. We would like to congradulate the following eighth and ninth graders for having been picked to participate in the society. Longmire Named As Semifinalist NOV. 6, beef fingers, whipbrocco- ped potatoes li, cresecent rolls fruit cup, milk. Valerie A. Longmire, the daughter of Senior Master Sgt. (retired) and Mrs. Alvin D. Longmire of Layton, has been named a semifinalist in the 1982 National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students. Longhorn Roundup Bv CHRISTINE ANGST A HalloKAYSVILLE ween carnival will be held at the Samuel Morgan Elem. School from 9 p.m. on Friday. The event will feature a spook alley, hot dogs and barbecue for sale, a bake sale and country store. Tickets will be sold for 10 cents to be used for the purchase of these items. TERRY KEALAMAKIA came in with top honors for first place in district wrestling. Coming in fourth was Steve Williams, Scott Woodward, Mitch Joos, and Paul Arguello. More activities have been planned at North Layton for the near future. So, keep your eye on the Longhorn Roundup to find out all about them. SHE IS the only student in the state of Utah to be selected to enter the semifmalists and then go on to take a further battery of tests that determine scholarship awards. Over 70,000 students n-wide took the tests. Valerie is a senior at Layton High School, where she is a member of the Laytones, the Acappella Choir, the ski club, and the Model United Nations. natio- AT LAYTON High, her main interests in school are languages and social studies. She hopes to earn a college degree in corporate law. Her favorite hobby is skiing.
