Show 1 I WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, SEPTEMBER 24, 1981 nfu By KEITH DUNCAN Perhaps Layton Highs Kenny Nelson and Scott Allen and Clearfield's Mike Kettell and Bruce Reid will never w alk a fairway with Jack Nicklaus. Maybe they wont even play on a college team. BUT. ..THERE is much more to this story than that. Nelson, Allen, Kettel and Reid are all prep golfers this season and along with a dozen others represent both the Clearfield and Layton golf teams. THESE PLAYERS dont go out and blitz Laytons Valley r View m rounds every afternoon but they are having an experience now that will last many of them a lifetime. And even though Roy and sub-pa- Bonneville might waltz to another Region One championship, the Falcon and Lancer team members are having a that positive experience will perhaps enhance their participation in this lifetime sport. DAE Nielsen, Layton's first year head golf instructor, says, In just three weeks Ive found how worthwhile a high school golf program can be. Its valuable to the players of course, we dont have many fans. "Everything about it is positive. The inner action between players and schools has been temfic. The real meaning of sportsmanship is brought out here. THE KIDS will congratulate each other on a good drive or a good putt. Its been extremely enjoyable to me to see the good feelings develop between two different schools in nine hole round of a golf, said Nielsen. And I'm sure these experiences are having a positive affect on these kids careers in one of sports most enjoyable and lifetime games, Nielsen said. two-ho- LAST THURSDAY afternoon at Valley View, Clearfield and Layton teamed up in each in last weeks of Clearfield lines up putt match. The Falcons went the round with fewer shots, beating the Lancers 153 to 180. Veteran Clearfield coach, Frank Reed, was happy with his team's performance but said the year of '81 would wm mostly be a building year and not to expect too much. Three more that compete in the top eight include Bob REED HAS coached golf at Clearfield since 1963, some 18 years in total. He has seen atop the league as a region champion and has finished on the bottom too. But the veteran mentor feels the same about the sport as Raymond Pollard. e, Nielsen of Layton reflects. "Winning matches and championships are nice trimmings, but the meat of the game comes through the little things that occurfrom the game, he said. George Alex and IT ILL take time to get a solid program of golf established, said Nielsen, "But we hav e ev ery intention of getting it done. Nielsen appeared excited about the addition of the Allen brothers to the program. The .Allen family moved to Utah as part of their father's position in the U.S. Air Force. Ths father is a full colonel in the air force and moved his family here from Florida. The state tournament for prep golfers in Utah w ill occur on Oct. 21 at the Davis County Park Golf Course. Former Falcon Bill Schumer now performs with the West Point Academy squad. In addition to Schumer, Von Gardiner, Jeff Hoye and Craig Suekawa are attempting to qualify for the Weber State golf team, one of the top programs in the country. Matt By KEITH DUNCAN bined in 1977 to lead the Falcons to their finest season in the history of Clearfield football. With Jack Hannum at the helm, the Falcons posted an record including a perfect 0 mark in league play. With Richeson mounting big yardage from his tailback position, the Falcons went all the in the way to the state playoffs. Faithful Clearfield football fans relived a memorable "Robbie Richeson Era" of 1976 and 1977 last Saturday night in Salt Lake City as Richeson ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns in helping the University of Utah to a 46-- 0 crushing of Portland State. 3 RICHESONS career at the University of Utah has been hampered with injunes and the fact he has had to fight some with some pretty fair running backs for a starting position. When you go up against the likes of Sam Baldwin, Mike Mosley, Tony Lindsey, Del Rogers and a Louis Walker, better count on a bitter battle. And thats just what it has been in the four years he has played under Howard. suw 4-- said Robbie, I have to thank Coach (Wayne) Howard for allowing me the opportunity to prove myself.
