Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, SEPTEMBER 24, 1981 j- - doi vv Starved For THE WARRIORS Steve Beutler completely ran over the Falcon defense for 203 yards on 37 carries. Steve Caputo gained 161 yards the first week of prep play as View morn chewed up ground yardage against the Falcons too. Mike Egan of Woods Cross tallied 98 yards against Clearfield to push the subject even further. Clearfield travels to Bonneville where the Lakers are blessed with a powerful and bruising runner too. His name is Bryn Potter who last Friday carried the pigskin for 3 times and racked up 152 yards against the favored Royals. But don't stop there, the Lakers also have another one in Greg Engeman w ho totalled 72 yards on another 18 carries. By KEITH DUNCAN Dunng this past June there probably wasn't a football player in Clearfield that figured in September they would lose to the Bonneville Lakers. AFTER LOSING to them for the past few years in games that havent been close, the seniors at the school had it all planned out how '81 was to be different. The optimistic attitude about another football season was like wild fever that wouldnt stop. Two months later however, the outlook might be a whole lot different. 1 YOU PROBABLY still couldn't get the Falcons to be- lieve you if you told them the Lakers were going to run all over them Friday, but their confidence has to be shaken a bit after losing four straight games. WITH THAT kind of awesome on the ground if the Clearfield in- cluding their Region Four opener against Roy last week. They didnt just nip the powerful Royals, they literally box them up and buried them 3 on the Royals home field. 27-1- cant put THE QUARTERBACK THE LAKERS are the defending state champions having beaten the Royals in the final game last season. They are headed by veteran coach, Tomm Budge, who can never be taken lightly. Budge has built an impressive program at Bonneville and if they ever do lose, it is not by much. So once again, its the Lakers and the Falcons on the gridiron this Friday in Bonneville. Coach Brent Hancock, who once ran up a pretty impressive record while coaching at Bonneville, said in the very beginning that the team that captures the Region One title wouldnt do so without a loss. NOW THE Falcons are 1 in league play and probably cant afford another loss if they have any desire to win a region championship. Probably one of the most significant things about the n battle is not the talk of region championships. It all boils down to the fact that Clearfield needs a victory and a few more after this to salvage what is turning into a tragedy filled season. "D something stronger together. Clearfield also has some fine running backs in Karl Wilson, Bill Kelley and Mike Blair. None of them have got untracked yet to have a great game and are part of an offense that has scored only 23 points all year long. Bonneville on the other hand has won three games run- ning game, the Lakers will be situation in Clearfield was unsure last Monday but Hancock can now turn to two capable QBs. One is a senior in James Prothero, who saw very little action against Weber last Friday because of a leg injury. The veteran football coach has turned to his junior, Robert Sherwood when Prothero has been hurt. Sherwood three interceptions in the first half at Weber but considering that was his first start ever and the fact he has had so little experience, the turnovers he has created can probably be overlooked. 0-- Senior quarterback, James Piothero, saw limited action against Weber because of a leg injury. He will be back in the line-u- p against Bonnev ille this week in the free safety position. Laker-Falco- ONE TEACHER at Clearfield who follows the Falcons week in and week out commented, "All they need is just one win to build up their confidence. I still think they can go a long ways if they can get it." In getting down to basics, Clearfield has got to put together a better defensive showing than what was exhibited last Friday in Weber. will st.ut this hidav against the Bonneville I.akns. lie had a shakev Mart against Weber last week in Pleasant View but oveiall plaved consistent enough to win ovei the stai ting position. He can put the ball w here he wants it when given the time to throw. He delivered a 40 yard touchdown bomb to Gene Duran in the closing minutes of the Weber game in a picture perfect pass play. The Bonneville defense has to be contended with too. Matt Roush, Todd Smith, Darrell Call and Jamie Hawkins all created turnovers last week and are healthy for this w eeks game again. One Weber High coach commented only seconds before the gridiron battle last Friday afternoon that the clash might be nicknamed the "Toilet Bowl." and one of us "Were both is going to be flushed down a said little further after today the coach. A KERRY Jepson fumble re covery gave the Warriors the ball 20 yards from touchdown territory. SO ONCE again it wasn't that the Falcons lost because they were outmanned or outplayed. they simply just gave the ball game away in the first 24 minutes by allowing Weber to take possession inside their own 20 yard line took the first three games of the season to get untracked, but all that counted last Friday was the demonstration the Warriors put on in trouncing the Falcons.
