There are, however, three other cement concerns whose prospects are less than bright Giant Portland & Masonry Cement, Penn Dixie Industries, and Puerto Rican Cement. Sale of the stocks of these firms is advised. SO FAR in 1980 the building industry has been in a dow nph-as- e, particularly in the area of residential construction. Furthermore, the slackened construction pace is expected to continue over the near term, and as a result there is bound to be some rough sledding for the cement firms in the period just ahead. Nevertheless, to strike a more optimistic note, it should be pointed out that housing d accounts for less than of cement use. one-thir- SO, IF highway or sewer work and commercial construction hole up, the cement industry should not be hurt badly and should be able to ride through any recession in reasonably good shape. If the industry does not overexpand, the outlook beyond the near term appear to be exceptionally promising. Because of the favorable prospects for the cement industry over the intermediate and longer terms, the Research Department of Babson's Reports is recommending retention of the stocks of most of the leading cement producers. THIS INCLUDES Alpna Portland Industries, General Portland, Ideal Basic Indus NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MARCH 6, 1980 As one case in point, a congressional committee recently declared that 100,000 of the countrys highway bridges are unsafe; repairing them would take tremendous amounts of cement. Other large projects that might involve massive use of cement are the proposed MX missile system and synthetic fuel undertakings. TENDING TO offset these positive factors to some degree are a few important negative WOODS CROSS -- When it comes to high school sports one can talk all day about how it takes a lot of talent to win, then good coaching but the fact still remains that without a little thing called luck you can have the other two and still not win. THAT STIGMA is called frustration. And if you were looking for a single word to sum up the past season for the Wildcat basketball team the word frustrating would certainly play a major role. The Cats lost a bunch of games by small amounts of points. In fact its very easy to say that with a bounce here or current purchasing, the Babson Research Staff feels that some other industrial groups offer better opportunities near term than does cement. But when it appears that the construction downturn may be bottoming out, consideration may be given to adding a cement stock to your portfolio provided the price is right. THE CEMENT industry has several plus factors making for a favorable longer-rang- e outlook. For instance, a tight d situation has prevailed in cement since supply-deman- 1977. As a result of this, prices have increased and profits of the important companies have improved. Accordingly, they now have somewhat more money to lay out for moderni-zatioand possibly new plants. n VET, LOOKING ahead, we would not be surprised to see the cement industry hard pressed to meet the longer-terdemands for new and replacement projects. there, the Cats would have been in the state tournament this week instead of in the stands watching. LAST WEEK they really showed their poise and pride to many folks when they knocked off West in the final game for both sides. Nothing but pride was on the line in that outing and the Cats proved they still have pride in themselves and their game. The coaching and talent were there, the luck wasn't. They lost to Viewmont by one point at Woods Cross, then led the Vikes going into the fourth period only to lose. Highland beat them with a last second shot up on the Ram floor. DALE NELSON We often say that health in a free society is an individual responsibility. We have to choose for ourselves whether we take good care of ourselves or, as some take pride in doing, take bad care of ourselves. YET, ON second thought, it is not quite that simple, because not all disease and decay are Many sick and dying had no choice in their predicament. As a consequence, we must recognize that responsibility for ones health life can extend only so far, and beyond that comes a yielding and an acceptance, always remembering the limit of responsibility. CONGRATULATIONS Coach, and the whole wrestling team on a great year! AMERICAN PARTY Two hundred years ago, some inspired men walked this land of America not perfect, but men raised up by the perfect man to perform a great work. Foreordained were they, to lay the foundation of this republic, the Lord's base of operations. Blessed by the Almighty in their struggle for Liberty and Independence, the power of Heaven rested on these founders as they drafted that great document for governing men, the constitution of the United States. Like the ten commandments, the truths on which the constitution was based were timeless: the hand of the Lord was in it. They filled their mission well !! IL c . 8 a ilff The Lord has so arranged things in this fife that men are free agents unto themselves to do good or evil, so the Lord has given all of us freedom to choose, while reserving for himself our final judgment. Freedom is Gods fight, and free agency is an eternal principle. It existed before this world was formed; it will exist forever. Freedom is a law of God, an eternal law. So long as man stands for freedom, he stands with God. The question as to whether our constitutional republic will be saved is based on two factors: the number of: patriots and the extent of their obedience. That the Lord desires to save this nation that he raised up, there is no doubt But that he leaves it up to us, with his help, is the Awful Reality. Today you cannot effectively fight for freedom and not be attacked, and those who think they can are deceiving themselves. While it is not necessary to step out of the path of duty to pick up a cross that you do not need, a man is a coward who refuses to pick up a cross that clearly lies within his path. An ounce of energy in the preservation of freedom is worth a ton of effort to get it back once it is lost. There were men at Valley Forge who werent sure how the Revolution would end, but they were in a much better position to save their own souls and their country than those timed men whose major concern was deciding which side was going to win, or how to avoid controversy.
