SURE THERE are some favorites, and some teams just happy to be in the event, but it is generally considered that as many as 12 of those teams entered could win the title. Being a weekly paper, the tournament creates a lot of problems in reporting. First of all this article is due Monday at noon, which is before the first game is played. It doesnt come out until Wednesday afternoon, when several days have gone by. although by the time this is is well as posinto the to win. The current dilemma facing this country and others, whether to go to Moscow for this summers Olympic Games, is a grave one, with long-terimplications. And beyond that, theres an even shape, at least according to the coaches, than the Braves. Bountiful faces a tough Timpview club in the opening round and then will probably face Provo the second night. Viewmont meanwhile battles Springville first and then the Jordan-BoElder winner, or loser. Davis faces Highland opening round, this could be one of the best first round games. Neither has a great deal of size and both have a lot of tradition. LAYTON Dwain Martin- son, the son of Darrel and Leah Martinson, 910 Amethyst, Layton, became the Utah State High School wrestling champion for the 138 pound weight division when the State High School Championship Wrestling Meet was held Feb. 14, 15 and 16th at the University of Utah. His final opponent was Dale Bennett, a senior from Brighton High School. Dwain won this championship match by a 4 score in overtime. 4-- PROVO HASN'T been the dominant force many thought they would have been. American Fork won the league but dont have much height. Judge has agood club with tournament experience. Some coaches note that if Box Elder or Jordan play well they have the talent to win it all. Then many coaches had pointed to Viewmont and Bountiful as possible winners. The Vikings have played well the last two games and Bountiful has been improving and playing well. The Lancers and Bobcats will flip a coin to determine which club goes as two or three. Coach Doug Moon is very set in his mind as to which spot he wants. "Number two will host Granger while three probably gets Bingham. Not saying one is easy but Bingham has a great height advantage over us whereas we match up pretty State By DAVE field will have to decide on a WIGHAM CLEARFIELD defense for these two players, They have been playing basketball now for about three months and after all is said and done it will still take a coin toss to determine just who the Clearfield team will play in the opening round of the state 4A tournament. THE FALCONS finished the regular season action with a record which left them in a tie with Bonneville for fourth place in the rugged Region One standings. The two clubs will now meet and flip a coin to decide who goes to the tournament as the fourth and who goes as the fifth place club from the region. All six teams are in the tournament under the new format. WHETHER THEY go as four or five the Falcons will be on the road March 7 for the first game. Under the new system the first round games are played at high school, then they switch to the University of Utah the following week for the remaining contests to decide the champion. With those possibilities open it looks as if the Falcons will either travel to Orem or Skyline depending on the coin flip. Neither prospect is what Coach Hansen would have liked. Had his club placed in the top three in league play they would have played at home in their spacious new 4-- 6 gym. BOTH possible opponents have good clubs that sport one star that is a scoring whiz. This means the coaches at Clear coming up with winning strate-gie- is something those coaches for the Falcons are good at though. Traditionally the Clearfield basketball teams have been tough in the opening round at state, keep in mind though they have to play on their opponents floor. Skyline, who is coached by Paul Jeppson, who resides in Centerville, is led by junior sensation Paul Drecksel. This junior forward can score from anywhere on the floor and has had several games of thirty plus points. The Eagles look to this man a lot and more than not he responds. The Skyline club finished second to East in the tough Region Three standings with a good record. OREM meanwhile is led by senior Chris McMullin who some feel is the best big man in the state as a senior. This senior likes to get the ball inside and low and then wheel and deal on his man, and he is good at it. Not a true big man at 64 but he has the height to cause Clearfield problems. The Falcons know their club, they know what they can and cant do on the floor. They have shown good patience and poise at times and have won those contests. Brook Hicks has been their most consistent scorer although people like Danny Perkins, Jeff Gorringe, Scott Wallace and Troy Nye have all played well. TRADITION plays a major role in the state tournament and the Clearfield school is loaded with it. No matter who the opponent the Falcons will 7-- 3 Have Your Broken Windshield Replaced Your UTAH 84041 s First Call, All To Leak) Glass Needs GLASS Specializing in Insurance Claims Broken Home Windows Storm Windows & Doors Mirrors Table Tops Store or Business Windows DAVIS COUNTY GLASS CO. trols everything including sports, has made the Olympics, inevitably, a political to a showplace, comparison degree. That makes for nationalistic considerations and tensions also. THE LARGER issue is games for political purposes, and seek to paint their hosting as a sign of international approval. Add to this the fact whether the games have become too commercial and too nationalistic. The ideal of the games, a fine one, was that athletes from the various parts of the world meet and compete in a friendly, neither commercial nor nationalistic atmosphere. Yet the emergence in recent decades of communist that commercial influences have seeped into the games; and one has a dilemma of more serious proportions than 1980 and Moscow. give them a run for their money. well with the Granger club in that aspect at least." BINGHAM finished league play in a tie for second place with Orem in the tough Region Two war. Hillcrest, who many feel is the top club, won the league. The Miners finished with a 4 record which is identical to that of the Lancers. Granger was fourth in Region Three with a 6 record, East, Skyline and Olympus all placed ahead of the Lancers. 6-- 4-- COMPARING the two possible opponents in statistics finds that the Granger club has given up more points than they have put on their side of the ledger while the Bingham club is ahead in their scoring pace. The big man for Bingham is 66 Tom Roberts, the brother of BYU standout Fred, who comes from a great basketball family. His height alone would give the smaller Layton club fits. MANY FEEL the Lancers of Layton face an uphill battle in the state tournament which is probably one reason theyll play tough. Tell these guys, Burke, Vigil, Lee, Owens, Siekiera and Sackett that they dont have a chance and they'll play their hearts out to prove you wrong. The tougher the challenge the better this team plays. Coaching-wis- e they have one of the best. CHAMPION SOME EXPERTS, they call themselves that at least, look to Ogden as the top club. They beat Bountiful by a point in preseason but have gone through league play unbeaten. Coach Mike Gardner of Davis, who has played the Tigers twice, sums it up this way, They have everything a high school team needs. A team to beat them would have to have some big people up front to battle them on the boards. There are several clubs that have that power, in other words the Tigers are beatable.
