FISHER continued, They, as well as we, are aware that morality in this nation is under attack. To protect ourselves, families and communities we must keep public institutions in the hands of the citizens to whom the institution is responsible. To do this we must elect politicians we can respect; who make and defend laws representative of their constituency. But there our responsibility does not end. When those officials are brought into battle for doing the job we have elected them to do we must place ourselves ar i! , or side HE ADDED that at least three groups were identified with an effort at intellectual freedom and said, ADDRESSING requests for reinstatement of Miss Layton he said, Could they just be using her? I think she's been used more than she knows. We have some courageous board members here, Commissioner Swapp added. I said when I was elected that I wanted to do something about our antiquated library system. Ive known all along who our .enemies are. He said 17 people were gathered at the North Davis Branch Library in Clearfield to organize a library group. THAT GROUP was a subversive group, he said. I have before me information concerning that group indicating they elected a president and vice president. The president was going to apply for a position on the library board (since filled by Statistics Can Be Manipulated? because .it demonstrates either gross negligence on the part of UTA or a deliberate intention to mislead through distortion and omission. IN ACTUALITY the state minimum school program does guarantee just that: a uniform minimum per pupil unit. But the fact is that our sister districts have $ther sources of revenue above the j,( minimum school program which Davis doesnt have even with federal funding. The voted leeway is one such financial tool, as are certain other special taxes. The great disparity in district wealth is directly related to the wealth of the tax base, and Davis simply doesnt have the same resources as Salt Lake, Granite and Jordan districts. GROUP III THE BOTTOM line is that passage of the voted leeway is necessary if our children are an education to have experience which approaches the opportunity provided in neighboring districts. UTA officials can afford to play fast and loose with the figures after all, their kids dont attend our schools! Last weeks article from the Utah Taxpayers Association about the School Boards voted leeway election illustrates the unfortunate degree to which statistics can be manipulated. IS THIS regrettable resent the propaganda being put out by the Davis County School Board in an attempt to scare us into votFour ing for their so called Mill Leeway Tax. By their own admission they are attempting to soak us double I that amount because any State matching funds also come from us taxpayers. THE SCHOOL board is using the scare tactic that if we dont vote for their leeway tax athletics will suffer serious cuts. To this I say nonsense. The school board could raise the funds needed by curtailing the unnecessary and inefficient bureaucracy growing in the present ad- ministration. For the voters the issue is very simple. If you want more taxes vote for the leeway tax. If you dont want more taxes, get your friends and go to the polls Nov. 27 to vote against this insidious proposal.
