No artifacts dating back to the time the fort was found have been recovered. DR. DEBLOOIS said Miles Goodyear came west in the waning years of the fur trade and built his fort near the Weber River in 1845, intending to make it a trading post of Ogden. DR. EVAN DeBloois, ad- of anthropology at Weber State and College regional archaeologist with the U.S. Forest Service, said in announcing the discovery that the site is probably the earliest permanent site in the Great Basin area which has been discovered so precisely. He pointed out that for 130 years the site has remained relatively undisturbed right in the central part of the city. Usually the remains of sites of that kind are destroyed as the community develops, he said. DR. DEBLOOIS said found were the cottonwood stump remains of the main anchor posts of the west, north, east and part of the south walls of the old stockade. The stumps outline a stockade 60 feet on the east and west sides, and 55 feet on the north and south. He junct professor for emigrants heading for California and Oregon. Critchlow III, Ogden attorney and a descendant of the Brown family, hailed the discovery as one of the most interesting things to happen in researching the history of Ogden. HE SAID the park could be made into a tourist attraction of interest. Mr. Critchlow and Dr. THE BROWN family used it until 1850, when the site was at least partially flooded by high water from the Weber and the fort was moved to higher ground to the southeast. As for the performance of radial tires: CONTRARY TO the impression of many motorists, radial tires are not necessarily a substitute for snow tires for driving on snow and ice. The performance of radial tires varies widely and is dependent on tread configuration; that is, a snow tread will perform as a snow tire; a regular tread will perform as a regular highway tire. In spite of the help provided by traction aids for stopping and starting, Chief Chard concluded that performance is nowhere equal that on normal dry pavement. Our best advice is to reduce speeds drastically. Follow other vehicles at a far greater distance. Perform all maneuvers slowing, steering or acwith a gentle, celerating delicate touch. He added that these performance comparisons are based on conventional cars; future tests may provide comparable data relating to the increasingly popular front-driv- e rear-driv- e good Chard pointed out, because stopping distances for the lighter cars can be as much as 25 percent shorter. THE CHIEF then went on to cite the bad news, according to the skid testers findings: First, the smaller, lighter cars develop less breakaway traction than standard size cars on ice.
