Show m WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, OCTOBER 11, w 1979 saRDcr By DAVE WIGHAM - BOUNTIFUL Usually these encounters over UEA week dont mean much to the clubs involved, but this week when the Davis club travels to Bountiful the game means plenty to at least one of the teams. non-leag- To Hillcrest For Football Action LAYTON - Laytons football team takes a week off from league action as the -- Lancers bring their act to Salt Lake City to battle Hillcrest from Region Two in a practice game set for Hillcrest on Wednesday. - ' - BOTH CLUBS are entering the game with a win last week crew as the Layton demolished Weber 8 while 40-1- the Huskies were beating Kearns 28-Those victories leave the two teams with identical records. Layton is 1 in Region One chasing Sky View 2-- and Bonneville while the Hillcrest team is at 1 in 2-- Region Two chasing Brighton and Bingham. , ii . II THIS LAYTON bunch are turning heads no matter if they win or lose. Each week they seem to outdo themselves from the week before. Two weeks ago the Lancers lost a heartbreaker to Bonneville in the second half and no one really knew what frame of mind they would be in this week against Weber. Unfortunately for the Warriors the loss made the Layton crew mad and they took out their frustrations on it the Warriors. 1 i ii DAVE BURKE and Mark were the leaders !U asVigilthe again two seniors each scored S Ii twice. Curtis Sampson, the fine guard and Gary Christiansen and Mark Bowman that create the openings for them to run. the DEFENSIVELY Lancers are getting better with each outing. In the linebacker for the Braves Weber win the coaches pointed out tackles Jim Suitt and Jaime Oliveras along with linebacker Jim Neighbor as standouts. Kurt Gallegos has also drawn a lot of praise from both his coaches and opposing coaches for his play on both sides of the line. HILLCREST also boasts a strong defense, in fact it was their defense that put three touchdowns on the board last week against Kearns. Dale Dawson picked off a pass and ran it in for a score from 50 yards out and then picked up a fumble and ran for the score from 20 yards out. Van Jensen also picked off a Kearns pass and returned it for a score from midfield. The other Huskie score came from the offepse with Eric Varoz hitting wide receiver Scott Pugmire for a short touchdown pass. HILLCREST though will have their hands full trying to stop the option play featuring Burke and Vigil. These two are as fine a tandem in the backfield as youll find in the state. With the line getting better each week the Lancers are becoming a tough football club to contend with, just ask Weber. Layton is creeping up in the polls while the Hillcrest team summed up the teams feelings, we feel we have lost some respectability around the state with those losses. If we can beat Davis then we feel that we can get some of that back. Three weeks ago the Braves were considered the number one club in the 3A ranks. Following those two defeats they have been dropped from one poll and ranked 8th in the other. fake. Then West simply kicked our butts, but we want another shot at them. EVEN THOUGH this is a By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL Viewmont is still wondering just what they have to do to break into the win column in the tough Region One football league but this week the Vikings step out of league action and take one Ogden. THE GAME is scheduled for Wednesday night. The Utah Education Association are holding their meetings this week which moved all the games up. Since the school week is short the coaches in the league decided to go with another game this non-leag- DAVIS ON the other hand has gone through their league unbeaten. They won the big matchup with Box Elder last week to give them sole possession of first place. The big question asked nowadays is just what has happened to the Bountiful club? Again Curtis Sampson answered. Its really a frustrating thing to us. We try different things and nothing seems to work for us. Woods Cross wanted it more than we did and I think some of our emotions at that game were week. The Vikings would have to get a lot of votes for the hard luck club of the league. They have played everyone tough and tight and are yet to come up with a win. League leader West had their toughest game with the Vikes winning 14-Bountiful won in a tough defensive battle 10-- Then last week the Highland club had to fight for their lives to come from behjnd to nip the Vikes AS ONE Highland coach noted, its amazing to me game both sides non-leag- have their reasons for the win. The Darts havent beaten the Bountiful school in several years and with the rivalry of being in the same county, plus being in the that a team that good hasnt won in this league, that tells you how tough this region is. Indeed the Viewmont team deserved to win over the Rams, they outplayed them for the most part. In the first half it looked like the Highland crew was going to rout the Vikes but two scoring drives were stopped by the Viewmont defense and the Rams settled for field goals. They did manage one touchdown to assume a 0 victory. IT WOULD have been easy 13-- for a winless club to give up at this point but Viewmont came roaring back to score a touchdown with Kyle Morrell sneaking over. In the second half the Vikings dominated both sides of action with the offense ripping off yardage at will and the defense stopping dead in their tracks. Highland BRIAN SKIDMORE and Brad Leavitt were able to run up the middle with good blocking from Bart Carlson, Mark Flake, Craig Cook, Tony Reynolds, Scott Barlow and Paul Hansen. Morrell also found the time to pick out receivers Scott Allred, Mike same classification, they want the win. They would also like to preserve their high ranking. BOUNTIFUL simply wants to get back on the winning track and get some of that respectability again. Davis Barnett, Hansen and Steve Knighton. On defense the likes of Brad Gibson, Kevin Feestone, Craig Young, Ben Carling, Knighton, Skidmore, Carey by these two losses how good the know they graves The Braves will probably be isnt fooled healthier this week than against West. Quarterback off an Kevin Kott was coming illness which prevented him from practicing, Mike a Hollingsworth was nursing sore foot and Rob Cottle was sick at the game. All three should be better this week. DAVIS COMES into the e game healthy with the Wishbone in full swing. Kays-vill- U 11 U kicked a twenty-fiv- yard CARPET field goal with three minutes left it looked as if the Vikes would win their first game but just like the South game a long pass play spoiled the Vikes day. This week the Viewmont team is up for a win, they have paid their dues and are anxious to get a win on their side of the ledger. If they play like they did against the Rams, then the Ogden crew are in for a long night.
