Or he could choose to be identified by a sports nickname, Crazylegs. Some A MAN options. By FLORENCE BITTNER As weve observed before, one persons junk is another persons treasure. Theres no explaining why people keep things except that sometimes things become almost a part of ourselves. LIKE THE rocking chair which both my parents used to comfort their children. All seven of us had many turns being held, cuddled, consoled in that wooden rocker with the padded leather seat and the legs wired and reglued who knows how many times. To a visitor it may have looked shabby and not deserv ing of its honored place in front of the heatrola, but to the children, it was security and love. Its arms felt much like those other human ones which kept the world awayi name, for obvious reasons was WONDER what ever became of Halitosis. We have lived in our house for a long time, since before the boys were bom. The house I has become too large and empty for me and the yard much too big for me to take care of. ON AN average of once a month I say I'm going to sell the ranch and move into a condominium and let someone else take care of all the real estate. I can orchestrate the chorus: Mother! You wouldnt sell our home! I guess I wouldnt, but I keep hoping someone will steal the back fifty feet of the yard. PART OF the reason they feel so attached is that this is home, and another part of the reason two boys. There was a 1928 Buick which became the tenth member of our family. In its old age, when the girls were teenagers, they made up unkind songs about its idiosyncracies and called it Lady Jane Shasta Daisy Bell; Shasta tor short because, as' we frequently explained Shasta be pushed. DONT think it was ever sold. When we left the hometown, Shasta was left behind, still reigning supreme in the shed beside the bam. My sister, Irene, had a little stuffed frog which became her security blanket. Long after she had stopped carrying it, she kept it on her pillow, night and day. Its I is MY KIDS say theyll out the keepsakes when I agree to part with one out of every ten books in the house. I think thats unfair. Why do we place such importance upon things? Worn out, unused, relics, space consuming; we accumulate and treasure items which have no value to anyone else. PERHAPS ITS because we know time passes and never returns, but when we fondle an old doll or look at a drawing by a third grader, we recapture for a moment that time which has passed beyond our recall. And in things, we hold onto our own lives. There are fered such a choice, who would retire to the nearest cave and embrace a life of those of us, of- meditation. Anything to avoid introducing yourself. ELROY (CRAZYLEGS) Hirsch has taken the opposite tack. He spends most of his time introducing himself. The man has practiced any number of trades, none of which lends itself to a low profile. Alex conjectures he would not have been nearly as ef- fective as a defensive tackle had his name been, say, Alexander Harris. He always pitied Milt Plum, who Karras felt, had all the requisites to be an outstanding quarterback except a hard name.
