Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, 1979 MAY 17. DGDDm Rule Questioned At Track IVleet By DAVE WIGHAM While attending the track and field championships last week for the local high schools, a rule came up which very few of the coaches realized and for a minute or two there was some doubt as to whether some of the athletes could participate on Saturday. WHAT HAPPENED was this. After running in one race a runner indicated that he had injured his leg and wanted out of the 220 trials that same day to save himself for the relay race. This is when the meet director, Chic Hislop, the coach of Weber State introduced the coaches to the rule. The rule is simply this, that if a runner scratches from one event once the meet has started that runner is out of the meet in any event. SO THIS meant that the runner who had pulled out of the 220 trials couldnt run in the relay races. Coach Hislop indicated to me that the coaches held a meeting prior to the meet for the purpose of scratching the runners who are injured. Then he added if a runner is hurt and cant run in the 220 then he must be too hurt to run the relay races. Might add here that the coach noted that if the athlete or coach had a letter from a doctor stating the 220 would hurt him and the relay wouldnt, they would let the runner run. DAVIS GALS CROWNED WHAT ABOUT the case of some of the Woods Cross runners then. On Friday the meet was about two hours behind time. The 100 yard dash trials were held in the morning but because of the two hour delay, the 220 trials were way into the afternoon. These baseball players had a double header and had to leave. It appeared that under this rule, the athletes who had to be scratched in the 220, wouldnt be able to return on Saturday to run in the relays. OGDEN Through the years the Davis High girls have set a few records in track and field. The Dart females have always been one of the powers in the state, year in and year out, only the names change, not the posi- tion. DAVIS HAS a great shot at the state team title this weekend, while other schools have some top individuals to watch. By DAVE WIGHAM Springtime means many things to different people but to followers of high school sports it means the state championships in many sports. clubs are right in the middle that race. Track and field hold their finals this week and several local people and teams have excellent shots at winning. Davis has a great shot at both the boys and girls team titles. Even if the team title evades them they have the likes of Mark Davenport, Wayne Pinto, Allison Horsley and Cynthia Ford to win titles. Bountiful looks to Steve Tueller to win in the half mile, Layton has Chuck Ehin and Charles Waller. AND LOCAL high school of MARK WAYMENT carries the hopes of Clearfield who could also be tough in the relay races. Woods Cross looks to their relay club and Greg Tuttle for points, Mark LeCheminant could also be tough m the sprints. In soccer the Bountiful club is definitely the team to beat. Right now, they, along with Orem, are the only unbeaten teams in the double elimination affair. Layton, who lost to Bountiful, is also still in the battle. Clearfield and Viewmont were in the tournament but have been knocked out. Woods Cross and Davis are still going in the chase. BASEBALL STARTS this week and Viewmont and Bountiful carry the banners of the county schools. Viewmont beat West in one playoff to gain a state berth on the two-hi- t pitching of Kelly Downs while Bountiful socred four runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Woods Cross has battled back to earn a Kearns playoff spot, to be played early this week. From their strong performance, they appear headed for a state crown this weekend. ALL THESE three sports will come to a close in the next week or so and the county schools are right in the thick of the races. This just goes to show that the local schools have as good talent as anyone around the state.
