THIS feeling was reinforced by a survey taken by Wasatch Opinion Research Corporation in Davis County, which showed that while 86 percent of the general public will seek emotional or psychological help from their family doctor and 74 percent from a clergyman, only 61 percent request assistance at the mental health center. The figure was slightly higher when community leaders were asked the same question. Sixty-nin- e percent said they would seek help at the mental health center. DR. WAYNE Owen, assistant director of the center, reported that the survey, in which 600 residents of Davis County were sampled 100 of them community leaders indicated two areas in which people felt improvement was necessary in services offered in the mental health area. Those two areas were the of a local development residential youth treatment facility for emotional and delinquency problems and additional treatment centers for alcohol and drugs. THE SURVEY indicated that 79 percent of the general Layton Police: Parking, Speeding Layton police are going to crack down on overnight parking violators and mo- torists who do not heed school zone speed limits and school crossings. ITS going to be dangerous, driving the next several months if we get the snow we hope for, said Mayor Lewis G. Shields, and Id like to ask motorists to strictly ob- serve all speed limits, especially near schools and school crossings. He said the citys public works personnel will be doing everything possible to insure the safest possible road conditions, but sincere help by the motorists is also needed. ITS ALSO essential that the citys overnight parking ordinance be enforced to enable road crews to clear streets, he said. Overnight parking is restricted in the city between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. HE SAID police have been instructed to cite owners of cars left parked on the streets between these hours, grb n facility for alcoholism and drugs, 84 percent the of general population indicated that drug and alcohol abuse was a problem in Davis County, with 98 percent of the leaders reinforcing that bcliof MANY SAID they per sonally knew someone with severe psychological emotiona or marit percent problem. Fifty-eigreof the local population sponded in the affirmative to this question, while 91 percent of the community leaders inht dicated they knew one or more such persons. The survey also indicated that over half of the general population would be interested in attending parent educa- tion classes, teaching child growth and behavior and parenting skills. Jack Russell, consultant and education director for the center, told the board that parenting classes are being offered by the mental health center in Farmington on Wednesday' evenings. THE DURATION of the class is nine weeks at a cost of $27 for two parent family and $13.50 for one parent families. Since the class operates on the modular system, parents can begin the class at any from the center provide a speakers bureau who talk to service groups and schools to inform people about the services offered by the center. Board member Hal Day, who has headed the committee for the construction of Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Center, said the attitude of county residents has changed extensively in the last five years. At that time there was a lot of resistance to building the alcohol and drug center, he said. ACCORDING to Dr. Williams, the mental health center hopes to let the public know that people do get over mental illness in a short period of time. Were a long way from where we were, he said. He said the mental health center is now getting many from referrals family physicians and clergymen. During the first year of operation, most patients were or were guided there by friends. Currently there are 770 clients enrolled in services at the mental health center. Dr. Owen said. d Receives 30 Year Pin Robert Malinoski of Roy has received a Force Hill Air pin at Base ceremonies. IN RESPONSE to a question asking to which social service residents would contribute money, three mental health services ranked among the top five, Dr. Owen said. They were: drug and alcohol service, youth counseling and mental health services. The survey also revealed that more people would seek help from a counselor, psychologist or psychiatrist than from the mental health center. The center was however, ranked higher as a resource facility for emotional or psychological problems than was a school guidance counselor or a social or case worker. DR. WILLIAMS expressed optimism to the board that the image of the mental health center is changing as people are coming forward and talking about their experiences with mental illness. IT WAS generally agreed that a suitable site would be available in the city park area, perhaps near the new museum. However, most councilmen agreed that they would rather see a joint school-citlibrary, if possible. If not. the council and mayor said they would be receptive to looking into the possibility of a new county y library. COUNCILMAN Kent Randall said he would like to see the library, probably at Layton High. Councilman Randy Harris agreed but noted that this has previously been frowned on by school authorities. Mayor Shields said he understands the library committee is looking favorable to Layton because of its rapid residential and commercial growth rate and that a new library building might be needed in only two years instead of 10 years as was previously considered by the council, grb city-scho- Nuclear Power v sub-soi- l, np in 1975, 170 billion generated kilowatt-hour- s of electricity sufficient to meet the needs of about 20 households. million typical Notice is hereby given, pursuant to section UCA 19.53, that on 10th day of January, 1978, at 3:00 p.m. in Room 108, Davis County Farmington, Utah, a public hearing will be held before the Board of County Commissioners to ascertain the interest in and determine the advisability of : Ordinance Temporary Housing for Farm Laborers.
