HE SERVED as Davis County Assessor from 1947-5and was chairman of the Davis County Selective Ser1 JOSEPH W. JOHNSON Joseph W. Johnson, 88, of 65 King Street, Layton died June 18, 1977 in the Weber County Hospital. MR. JOHNSON was born November 4, 1888 in West Weber, L'tah, a son of John and Carolina Anderson Johnson and was one of five children. He was raised on a farm in West Weber and attended school there and also the Weber Stake Academy in Hed-ber- g Ogden where one of his teachers was David 0. McKay. served a LDS Mission to Sweden, the land of his parents, from 1907 to 1910. On February 18, 1914 he was married to lucille Ence of Richfield, l'tah in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Lucille passed away December 18, He 1974. THEY WERE the parents of nine children, four boys and five girls, of which six sur- vive. Mrs. Bernard J. Shirley) Lehrmann, Ogden; Mrs. Adam A. (Beth) Jacobs, Clearfield; Joseph J. Johnson, Arvada, Colorado; Dean K. Johnson, Layton; Jean J. and 30 Mr. Johnson homesteaded land in Milford, l'tah and also operated a store there after his marriage. In 1918 he moved to Layton and was by the Layton Sugar Company as a sugar boiler. He was appointed postmaster of Layton in 1924 and served in this position employed until 1936. HE WAS . secretary of the Postmasters Association. Mr. Johnson was later 'employed by the l'tah Power :and Light Company, the L' t a h : Farmers L'nion Store of Lay-- . ton and the Arsenal in Sunset. In 1924-2he built the home ;he lived in until his death. He was interested in gardening, t fishing, hunting and sports. Mr. Johnson had been very : active in the LDS Church and was a High Priest in the Lay-- J ton 13th Ward. He has served as an Elders Quorum 'President, Stake MIA superintendent, secretary of - the Layton Stake High Priests and was a Bishops Counselor .in the West Layton Ward from Republican Party, having served several times as delegate to the county and state conventions. IN 1948, Mr. Johnson was appointed a member of the first Utah Water and Power Board by Governor J. Bracken Lee. He served on this board for several years. The L'tah Water and Power Board was instrumental in getting the Colorado River Compact signed and this made it possible for the Glen Canyon and Flaming Gorge Dams to be built. It also assisted in the planning and building of many other water projects in L'tah. Mr. Johnson was one of the first persons to instigate the Weber Basin Project which resulted in the building of Rockport Reservoir, Willard Bay, enlarging of East Canyon Dam, building the Gateway Tunnel, aqueducts, canals and other parts of this project which has brought the additional needed, water to Davis, Weber, Morgan, Summit and South Box Elder counties. Hershey, National director. For many years he was a Notary' Public and was one of the first persons in Layton to assist people in completing their income tax forms, which he did for almost 35 years. He was a member of the Sons of l'tah Pioneers and was very active in the Davis County MR. JOHNSON served as president of the Davis County Water Users Association for 25 years and for over 36 years was watermaster for several irrigation companies in Lay-toHe was also secretary for many years for two of these companies. He built many concrete headgates and culverts and was instrumental in getting many of the ditches in Laidon covered and lined with concrete pipe. On January 8, 1976, Mr. Johnson received the first annual Distinguished Sendee Award from the L'tah Water Users Association for his Outstanding sendee in the field of 5 1924-3- :: t WHILE HE was counselor he oversaw the cement work for the addition to the West He Layton Chapel, 1926-2also oversaw the cement work for the present Park Street Chapel in Layton from 1950-52- . He and his wife completed a lot of Temple work. He assisted in the : selecting and building of the ? present Layton Stake Camp at ; ON FEBRUARY 20, 1976, he was honored by Layton City, Davis County, Layton LDS Stake and Layton Water Users for his long sendee to them. He was presented a Certificate of Appreciation from Layton City and a Distinguished Sendee Award from Davis Count). Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were held Wednesday at noon, June 22, 1976 at the Park Street Chapel, 275 West 155 South, Layton. Friends called at the 340 North Main, Kaysville from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, June 21, 1977 and at the Chapel for one hour before the sendees. Lindquists Mortuary, b yman Lake, Utah. Harold E. Stettler, 49, of 2548 N. 300 W died June 11, Hos1977, at the McKay-De- e pital following an extended bom Feb. 2, 1911 in Layton, the daughter of Bert and Rhoda Miller Radden. The family resided in Layton, a short time in southern l'tah and then made their home in Syracuse. s At the death of Mrs. mother in 1919, she then made her home with an uncle and aunt, David and Maude SHE WAS illness. HE WAS bom Sept. 25, 1927 in Coalville, a son of Albert and Ethel Bayley Stettler. He married llene Mapier on Oct. 30, 1953 in Coalville. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He had lived in Ogden and in Sunset the last 16 years. He was former owner and manager of Standard Electric Company in Ogden. At the time of his death he was manager of the furniture and carpet department of ZCMI in Ogden. HE WAS former member of the Her-sey- Cook, also of Syracuse. SHE WAS a member of the Syracuse LDS Ward, and was graduated from Davis High School with the class of 1931. LEONE EVANS Funeral Soon after graduation she moved to California. She married Ralph James Hersey Services Held Friday Mrs. Leone Maxwell Evans, Elders Quorum presidency, Sunday School teacher. Scoutmaster and Cub master in the Sunset 5th Ward. He was a veteran of world war II serving in the Coast Guard. Surviving are his widow and the following sons and daughters: Timothy H. Stettler, Jeffery D. Stettler, Michael A. Stettler, Susan Stettler, all of Sunset; Mrs. Irvin R. (Jane) Hansen, Ogden; one grandchild. brothers and one B. Stettler and Lawrence B. Stettler, both of Caldwell, Idaho; S. Leroy Stettler, Kaysville; George W. Stettler, Roy; William D. Stettler, Ogden; Mrs. Dean E. (Elaine) Beus, Kuna, Idaho. Funeral services were held Friday, June EVANS was born January 5, 1900 in Peoa, Utah, a daughter of James Alma and Sarah Lydia Staker Maxwell. She married Hugh Alvah Evans on June 14, 1920 in Salt Lake City. He died April 12, MRS. 1965. SHE WAS a member of the LDS Church, has served in the Primary Presidency, Primary teacher, Primary Stake Board member, MIA president and teacher, Relief Society teacher and work director in the Oakley LDS Ward. Mrs. Evans was a Club leader for ten years. She had lived in Summit County, Utah until 1954 when she came to Kaysville. The Sunset Stake Primaries, which included children from all seven LDS Wards, began the festivitie? of the day with their annual childrens parade. at the Sunset Central Park and was sponsored by the Sunset Utah LDS Stake. THE activities began with a 7 to 9 a.m. Various booths included the selling of food, water balloons throw, fish pond and drinks. Various drawings were held during the morning until the beginning of the baby contest with ticket holders receiving various gifts and prizes. Races were held for all ages breakfast from AT 1 p.m., a baby contest was held at the bowery with first, second and third place ribbons being awarded to winners in various categories Immediately after the baby contest an auction of new donation articles was held. The auction continued until after five when the reigning Miss Sunset, Cheryl Moore drew several tickets before a winner was announced on the grand prize of a coloied 19 inch General Electric TV donated by Raymond Grand Company. prize Adabelle Schofield Rites Held Friday former Kaysville resident, Adabelle Schofield Rose of Dayton, Idaho, 62 years old, died Tuesday in a nursing home in Idaho. 11 a.m. in the Lindquists Kaysville Mortuary Chapel.
