Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, JUNE 23,1977 IS Queen And Her Court Win Two By DAVE WIGHAM IIteh: Waite Up And Improve American Legion Baseball By DAVE WIGHAM This subject has been talked about before and will probably be talked about a lot more after this column is long forgotten. Its in regards to American Legion baseball. First of all why should an athlete play ball during the summer and secondly is there an advantage to combining high school reams to play legion ball? TO ANSWER the first part, you would have to ask the athletes themselves. So I did. Many of them indicated their main purpose was their enjoyment for the game. For the past two or three years they have been playing school ball- and have grqflk n to love playing the sport. The games are scheduled in the evening for the most part which gives the athlete the opportunity to work for some money as well as playing. Its also rumored in some circles that certain players are given jobs so that they could play legion ball for a certain club. - AS FAR AS the combining aspect is concerned I like it. A few years ago, when I was the age to play legion ball, Viewmont and Bountiful combined for one team. What a team they had. Year after year this single club was a top club in the state. Some teams combine out of necessity for numbers. Layton and Davis High Schools might have a hard time fielding two teams but as it is they form one very strong club. OTHERS DO it for competitiveness. For example the Ogden team is a combination of Ben Lomond and Ogden teams. These two could easily field two separate teams but they want to be competitive so they combine. This past week there was a tournament in Ogden which involved a legion team from Cincinnati, Ohio. This club has won four national titles. Thats right, national titles. A Utah club hasnt come close to winning a regional crown. The manager of this Ohio club selects his team from two high schools in Ohio. ONE OF these schools is an Catholic school with a 4,000 enrollment, the other school only has 2,000. Tell me they couldnt field two teams. This manager knows what it takes to win, combine all the resources available. Maybe some day Utah will wake up and realize what it takes to improve their legion program. One that could compete on a regional and national level. all-bo- Coming into Bountiful last week, the famous softball team known as the Queen and Her Court were renown for their winning softball team and their strike-ou- t pitcher. LEAVING Bountiful last week, the Queen and Her Court left with two more victories and a whole bunch of more to their strike-out- s record. Hie team was b'lled as an exciting and entertaining squad, and they didnt disappoint a good crowd at the Mueller Park diamond on Friday evening. FIRST THE team went through their warmup drills which included some juggling acts, a pitching demonstration and some comedy from their shortstop Lotta Chatta. Then the Queen faced the media team which did nothing but add to her strike-ou- t total. This reporter had the distinct opportunity to face the Queen while blindfolded, she struck me out. The embarrassing aspect of that was that she was the one All-St- blindfolded. THE NEXT two innings the Queen took on a bunch of allstars from the Davis County girls league. The gals gave it their best but the Queen was out of their league. The final innings were billed as a male team, this turned into a comedy routine with Lotta All-St- Iyton-Clearfiel- Queen, Rosie Black. During the inning, Lotta got Kent Galloway out for destroying the equipment, when he hit a melon instead of the ball. Bob May was then struck out on some questionable calls, the last being a fastball that no one in the stands saw her throw. Then Terry Orchard was the next strike-ou- t victim with a little help from the beautiful girls k and a umpire. WINNERS Dealers Tournament By DAVE WIGHAM Over the past weekend the top professional and amateur golfers in Utah and some from surrounding states played three courses in Davis County in the Toyota Dealers tournament. STARTING ON Friday the 18 holes at Bountiful City, Davis Park and Valley View golf courses. This was a unique tourney with the winner having to play well on three different layouts rather than the usual one. The Toyota dealers put up some $13,000 in prize money which was good enough to entice almost all the top golfers around to the tour- golfers played nament. ON FRIDAY, the golfers converged on the Bountiful City course, which fast gained a reputation for hazardous putting. Many of the golfers admitted that whichever two putted most of the greens would finish with the low round. As it would happen, Jeff Jerman, the assistant pro at the course, was the first day leader with a fine 67. Jeff admitted that playing on his home course helped his cause but others mentioned that Jeff has been playing well for about a month. RICK MEARS, a former Bountiful resident who is an assistant pro in Ogden, also carved out a good opening round of par 71. On Saturday the golfers moved on to the Davis course where it seemed the Weber State golfers took over. Dur- ing their college days the Wildcats played many a round on the Kaysville course and they showed their familiarity with the greens again on Saturday. and Mike Malaska, both former Weber stars, emerged from the crowd. Jerman also carded near the par mark to stay in ALTHOUGH the Court put on many humorous displays, it was obvious that this bunch could play ball when they wanted to. Lotta Chatta has a great ability to catch the ball behind the back, over the head, or between the legs. Paul Ednoff has enough speed to represent the USA at any track meet and the Queen can throw with anyone. On Saturday night, the Queen and Her Court played some better competition in Salt Lake City, but again they won the game. In this game the guests faced some of the best male pitchers in the Metro league and still managed to hit them. BOB BRADBURY contention for the top spot. Then on Sunday the final round was played at the IN THE game, faced the Queen again, this time I at least hit the ball but it was right at the I first baseman. didnt win the top money, Bountifuls Jeff Jerman should certainly gain some he recognition and congratulations for his fine effort. THE POOL will be open for the summer daily, except Sunday, from 1:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. There are no lights for night swimming. Admission is 50 cents for children years of age. Adult fee is 75 cents and tots under 3 are admitted free. 3-- passes are also available for $20 for each individual, $30 for three persons, or $35 for four or more persons in the same family. Childrens swimming lessons are also available at $10 for 10 The courts might not be up to the standards the professionals are used to, but there are plenty of tennis courts available for public use in Davis County. BESIDES THE local high schools and junior highs, there are many courts throughout the various cities lessons. Air Logistics Center. HE WILL replace Brig. Gen. George L. Leagues from Littlp League all the way up to the major leagues are in full swing. THE American Legion program is probably the most d league there is. During the school year these athletes are the stars at their local high schools, then in summer they put on a different uniform and for some reason no one recognizes them. Viewmont for example is currently leading the league in the north with a perfect 0 mark. Those wins were at the expense of Ogden, Weber, Bonneville and Brigham City. was The Viking post scheduled to meet the Layton team but many of their players were still involved in the state playoffs at that time and the game was rescheduled. For times and fees on these lessons contact the recreation department in your area, or call the county department. Although there are many courts in the area, there are many more players than courts available, so the recreation department has set up several simple rules. THE OTHER local team in the county is the Layton squad which is a combination of Layton and Davis High teams With those two combining, this is a great team. The only thing lacking is playing time together. Fact it, these players have all day to play, while the others aie at work, They should use the courts at these times and let the adfilts play after six. The other rule is that each player only use the court for 45 minutes if someone is waiting to use them. Many have times people complained to city and county officials that they have had to wait over an hour and a half to play. If no one is waiting, then you can play, but if someone is on the side waiting to play then give up the court after 45 minutes. playoffs for so long, its been hard for this new team to As the season progresses this team will get practice tougher and tougher. ESPECIALLY THE Davis County athletes. For years many athletes from the county have gone on to play junior college ball in Utah. A couple of years ago fpr example there were about 12 players on the Ricks team that were from Davis County. This year is no exception as many of the players have signed to play at a Utah junior college. FOUR PLAYERS from Bountiful High have decided to all go down south to Dixie Junior College to play football for the Badgers next fall. Sheldon Bagley, Mark Dickerson, Ken Hosking and Gregg Bangeter have all indicated they will play at Dixie. now I SHELDON WAS a starting linebacker and lineman for the Braves. He is strong and fast and could play either offense or defense at Dixie. Mark was a top notch runner for the Bountiful squad. Had he not injured his ankle the Braves would have had a better shot at the state tournament. Dickerson could also run track for the Badgers. ' HOSKING PLAYED both tight end on offense and end on defense in high school and could possibly do both in college but on that level he will probably have to choose one and concentrate ton that. Gregg was the most consistent player the Braves had last year. From this tackle spot he was either making a huge hole or destroying opposing runners. Gregg doesnt look big enough but his quick aggressive style of ball makes up for any lack of size he might have. Obviously the Dixie people don't think hes too small, n Other Bountiful players are considering junior college ball, including Doug Angus and Bill Speaks. LAYTONS SAM Beeson and Curtis Page are going the junior college route, as is Johnny Gilbert. Many other athletes ,rom layton, Clearfield, Viewmont, Davis and Bountiful are planning on going to a Utah junior college. Maybe the major universities should take a lesson from their younger counterparts. |
