The Air Force has awarded another $1,000 to a Layton resident, making $5,000 he has received for a packing method that has saved the Air Force $10 million to date. J. ROBERT Bennett of the Directorate of Distribution at Hill devised a superior method of packing SUU-3aircraft bomb dispensers, which are carried by Air Force bomber and fighter aircraft. Prior to Mr. Bennetts suggestion, the bomb dispensers were packed one to a container. The containers were unstable because of their narrow width, 0 22-in- and their h length prevented them from being loaded widthwise in trucks. This increased the time required to load and unload. MR. BENNETT designed a wirebound plywood container that holds two dispensers. The dispeners are supported within the container in premolded polystyrene cushions, making a smaller overall package. The new design increases and safety; stability simplifies loading and offloading in trucks; reduces handling time and shipping weight, reduces storage space and provides other benefits. MR. BENNETT noted that cost of packing was reduced from $79.96 per dispenser to $28.44. A preservation packaging specialist Mr. Bennett has nearly 27 years of federal service.
